It’s a school day morning. You are dressing yourself in the bedroom. At the same time, you are thinking about taking your schoolbag from the living room. But when you walk through your bedroom door and into the living room, you suddenly forget why you go there.
Scientists believe that walking through doorways makes us forget things.
They call it the “doorway effect (门口效应)”.
Scientists from the University of Notre Dame in the US did an experiment. They put ten things into two rooms, five for each room. Students had to put one thing from Room A into a shoebox and then carry it to Room B through a doorway. In Room B, they exchanged it for another thing and brought it back to Room A in the shoebox. To compare, students had to do the same task (任务) without walking through a doorway.
During the experiment, scientists asked the students which object was in their shoebox, and they found that the students answered more slowly and less correctly when they walked through a doorway and into another room.
“Walking through a doorway acts like a ‘boundary (分界线)’ in the mind,” a scientist said. “It can make us forget things.”
