Are you troubled by housework, such as cleaning tables or tidying your room A new robot is here to help! Recently, short videos of a robot called Mobile Aloha cooking at someone’s home caught lots of attention online. It is made by scientists at Stanford University in the US. It became popular online.
In the videos, we can see the robot preparing dishes on its own, from cutting vegetables to cooking eggs. It’s also good at watering plants, taking care of cats, cleaning the floor and washing clothes. Linda, a 40-year-old housewife joked, “As long as this thing doesn’t try to kill me while I am asleep, I am in real need of it.”
Well, another video may disappoint (使失望) her. Mobile Aloha carelessly broke glasses and plates, knocked into things and even burned (燃烧)a dish. In fact, Mobile Aloha isn’t good at doing housework on its own. Instead, it learns from human actions before doing each kind of housework. When the situation changes, it can’t work well without a human “teaching” it.
“The robot can successfully move chairs 80 percent of the time,” said the scientists after they did more research on it. For cooking dishes, it’s only 40 percent. In short, it’s far from perfect. AI (人工智能) robots are good at tasks (任务) such as maths and playing chess, but they do worse than a one-year-old child when it comes to simple tasks like cleaning. And it’s the same for Mobile Aloha. For example, if its body doesn’t move correctly— even just with a small difference, its arm may move too far to pick up a glass.
“Robots are not ready to take over the world,” the team said later.

Tom was a lazy boy. He hated going to school, studying and doing homework. One day, when Gluebeard, the famous captain (船长), came to town in search of young sailors (水手), Tom made sure he was the first in line.
On Gluebeard’s ship, every minute of every day was spent looking for treasure and if anyone was found reading or studying, they would be locked in a small room full of mice. And so Tom began his life as a Lreasure-hunting sailor, but it wasn’t easy. They hardly had enough money to buy food and clothes.
One day, someone on the ship stole the only food Tom had left. Two days later, Tom was so hungry that he secretly went to the room full of mice to find one and eat it. People love to wear clothes made from cotton because they feel comfortable. When you enjoy the good parts it brings, do you know where it comes from The Indus Valley Civilization (印度河流域文明) is believed to have harvested (收获) cotton for the first time, but China is now the world’s second-largest cotton producer. Xinjiang in the northwest of China is home to the nation’s largest cotton-producing area.
In early September every year, the white hair that grows inside the cotton, spreads out for more sunlight, as if telling farmers it’s ready to be picked. Harvesting continues from early September to late October. China produces about 22% of the world’s cotton, of which 87.3% comes from Xinjiang, according to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The planting of cotton in Xinjiang dates back to the late Western Han Dynasty. According to historical records, the cotton introduced from West Asia to Xinjiang was the levant cotton (草棉). Cotton soon spread in Xinjiang because of the area’s full sunlight and enough rainfall, which the plant needs.
Xinjiang is famous for its long-staple cotton (长绒棉), which is popular among customers. In the past, people mainly picked the cotton by hand, but now machines have slowly replaced it. In Xinjiang, nearly 70% of cotton is harvested by machines. The use of machines prevents the cotton from being polluted and makes it better.
After bags of cotton are sent to many factories, they become clothes, toys, and others that we see in daily life. Cotton is so good that it has gotten a nickname (绰号)— “white gold”.

A team from Shenzhen Bao’an High School has invented a medicine box to meet the needs of people with eye problems. So far, the medicine box has won many national prizes.
According to the school, 12 students took part in the development and design (设计) of the box. From market (市场) research, box design, to app development, the project was completed by the students with the help of their teacher, Zheng Naihao.
The idea of the medicine box came from a field visit. In September 2021, Zheng and his students visited a massage (按摩) shop near the school during their lunch break. Some workers there were blind people. After the visit, the students began to pay attention to the lives of the blind. They found blind people could only tell different medicines by touch. Sometimes it could be difficult to tell the differences between those small pills (药片). Then they decided to try designing a product to help cut down the risk of taking wrong medicines for these people.
Developing a perfect product was not easy. The team had come up with many ideas, including medicine cups. Some students even thought of using AI (人工智能), but the idea didn’t work because of too many difficulties. Later, the team held discussions for nearly three months and finally decided to develop a medicine box using speech recognition (语音识别) technology.
To solve different problems in the development process, the team members used their free time to study on the box. After more than half a year of learning and improvement, the team created the first medicine box. Now the students are working hard to improve the product and bring it to market as soon as possible.
