Unexpectedly, Jake entered the next round and worked even harder. In the final Jake felt his heart ___19___
loudly. But when he heard his word, he was no more nervous. “C-O-U-N-C-I-L,” he answered correctly. He made it

Kevin loves to read mystery books because he likes to try to solve the mystery himself before he gets to the
end. Solving puzzles is like solving mysteries, so he likes working on puzzles too. He also likes solving problems.
Kevin can usually solve any mystery, puzzle or problem.
One day Kevin’s mom was trying to find her glasses. Without her glasses, she could not drive. This was a
problem because she was going to drive Kevin to his friend’s house. It was also a mystery and a puzzle. Kevin
really wanted to solve this mystery, so he sat down with his mom.
“Where do you last remember seeing your glasses ” he asked.
“I had them on while I was watching the news this morning,” she said.
“Where were you watching the news ” asked Kevin.
His mom thought for a minute, and then she answered that she was in the sitting room. She remembered sitting
in her favorite chair and taking off her glasses when the news ended. She thought she had placed her glasses on the
table, but they weren’t there. “Are you sure you didn’t put them on again after the morning news ” asked Kevin.
“Maybe I did,” his mom replied.
“Let’s walk through your day, Mom,” said Kevin. Kevin had his mom describe everything she remembered
doing during the day so far. She mentioned watching the news, making breakfast, folding laundry, working in her

his mom’s day, Kevin retraced her path through the house and yard. He looked under the cushion (垫子) of her

Kevin didn’t want to give up, so he looked in each place again and he looked even harder. When he went
around the kitchen again, he opened the cabinets(橱柜)instead of just looking on the counters. Kevin solved the

Fluency in another language is a dream of a newcomer to another country. Besides, understanding the culture
and learning to communicate comfortably with people of that culture are as important as learning the rules of the
language. Language learning and culture learning go together and may take a long time.
Sometimes people feel that they understand a culture after a few weeks or months. People do learn a lot when
they first begin living in another culture, but this is only the first step of learning. It usually involves things like
learning everyday activities and some basic customs.
To really understand another culture, people have to go beyond the first step. This is a challenge because it is
often difficult to know what to learn. Much of what we call"culture" is hard to see.
Culture is like an iceberg. Imagine in your mind a huge iceberg in the ocean. The only part of the iceberg that
you see is the top. You don't see the rest of the iceberg because it is hidden from sight in the water. It is easy to
forget that it is there. Most of the iceberg is deep in the ocean, just as much of a culture is deep in the ocean, just as
much of a culture is deep within its people.
When you meet someone from another culture, certain culture differences are obvious: You hear another
language or you hear your own language spoken with an accent. You see different foods, clothes and sometimes
physical characteristics of people. You watch new customs or habits, such as the use of chopsticks, and, bowing or
kissing on both cheeks as a greeting. These differences are interesting and important, but they are usually not too
difficult to understand. They can be seen easily and quickly.
The part of culture that is like the underwater part of the iceberg consists of assumptions (设想),
communication styles, values, and beliefs about what is right and wrong. The hidden part of culture influences
much of a person’s way of thinking and communicating. It is the meaning behind his or her verbal and nonverbal
language. Learning to communicate well with people from another culture involves understanding the hidden part
of culture.

Social Media… the Highs and Lows
Twenty years ago, the idea of sharing our lives so openly with the world was unheard of. However, for young
people today it is considered completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact online every day. Fans
of social media point out that the world has never been so connected as it has allowed people to make friends, learn
about the world and celebrate life.
However, many people have concerns about the effects of this new way of living, particularly around the
amount and type of information that is shared so openly.
Now researchers have found that too much time on social media may indeed have some negative( 消极的 )
effects. They measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after browsing social media sites. They found that
the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became.
There are a number of reasons for this. When browsing social media, people often see photographs and stories
showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People seldom post negative stories or bad pictures,
so it can be misleading. For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they can end up
feeling sad and depressed. They might think their lives are worse in comparison. Even for those people who post
positive(积极的) stories and pictures, they too can feel stressed and worried.
The number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them worried about their popularity. Of course,
there is also the problem of “cyber bullying”(网络暴力 ) where people become victims of bullying online when
others make negative or cruel comments(评论) about them.
The reality is that social media is a part of modern life and it is not going to go away. This research shows us
that it is important to deal with the relationship between our online and offline lives properly. We don’t have to
disconnect from the Internet to live a happy life, but we should realise that the pictures we see and stories we read
are only part of a bigger picture. If we can do that, we can protect ourselves and enjoy our lives.
30. According to the passage, we know __________.
第5页/共8页
A. spending more time on social media makes people more enjoyable
B. researchers haven’t found anything negative about social media
C. it is common for young people to share their lives online
D. the world is not so connected like before
31. The words “have concerns about” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “__________”.
A. feel worried about B. look forward to
C. speak highly of D. get used to
32. The writer says that social media can make people unhappy because __________.
A. different people make different comments
B. there are many negative stories and bad pictures
C. they compare positive pictures to their own lives
D. the number of “likes” is larger than they expected
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To ask us to protect ourselves from “cyber bullying”.
B. To advise us to keep away from the Internet to live a happy life.
C. To remind us of posting positive stories and good pictures online.
D. To tell us to keep a balance between our online and offline lives.
Some people say that today reading is not as important as it was.
These days we have photographs, films, radio, and television. Why read a description of something when you
can look at a photograph Why read a novel when we can see a film Why read I a newspaper when the latest news
is brought to us every hour on radio and TV
Photography is certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people
that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书), for example, is always better when it has good pictures. But
we also need words to explain the photographs. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what
an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are found,
their exact (精确的) size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.
In the same way, a good film has action, movement, colour, and maybe music. These are things we do not find
on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent feature film (故事
片). Reading a novel requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news
stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just report the news. It
explains why something has been happening. It also contains interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers
are an important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other
parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as human
第6页/共8页
beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better readers we become.
And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a
little every day.
