Tang Qixue was a teacher. In 2017, he retired (退休) from a primary school in Liling, Hunan, but he didn’t give up his “part-time job” as a special policeman, which he had taken since 2006. “We are proud of him,” his son said.
It was a Monday in August, and Tang was on his way to a market near his school, and at a crossing not far from the school, he saw something sad. There was a very bad accident (事故). Two kids in Tang’s class lost their lives in the accident. “It broke my heart, and I didn’t sleep that night.” Tang said. “It was thinking that if anybody was there, watching, maybe the accident would never had happened.”
Tang told himself he must do something to help. Finally, he decided that he would escort (护送) students to the other side of the road. Tang bought a whistle (哨子) and a pair of white gloves. From then on, he would stand in the middle of the road on school days and try to tell the drivers to watch out and slow down at that crossing.
However, escorting students is not easy. On September 9th, 2019, as usual, Tang was working when a motorcycle (摩托车) didn’t slow down and ran to the students. It all happened so fast that Tang had no time to think. To protect the students behind him, he threw himself in front of the motorcycle, then got hurt and taken to the hospital.
Although it may be dangerous, he never thought of giving up the “job”. Thanks to him, no students have had an accident at the crossing for 17 years.
