Dear Tom,
I’m so glad to hear from you. Knowing there are optional courses in your school, I suggest you choose Chinese. Because with the development of China, Chinese is becoming more and more popular. Learning it offers you a way to communicate and a chance to enjoy Chinese culture.
As a Chinese, I have much experience to share with you. In my opinion, there are many ways to learn it. For example, it’s useful to listen to Chinese songs and read Chinese books. What’s more, you may join a Chinese club to practice your spoken Chinese. Learning is a lifelong journey so try to keep practicing every day.
I hope my advice can be helpful and you will certainly make great progress.
Yours, Li Hua

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem. “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work”. But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.
A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food No, according to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.
Chinese people are well known for being generous(慷慨的). Many even feel that they lose face
if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired (开除) because she took some leftover(剩余的) food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and agreed that it was not right to waste food.
What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food Here are some tips:
Do not order(定购) too much in a restaurant. Only order what you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
Don’t be too picky(挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great. But your body needs it.
Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don't buy too much, especially for vegetables
and fruit.

Smartphones have become an important part of our daily lives. But many students spend too much time playing games, listening to music, watching movies and chatting with friends on their phones and can’t focus on their studies.
This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebrae(脊椎 )and even the brain, according to the World Health Organization.
The Ministry of Education has released ( 发布) a notice that limits primary and middle school students to carrying mobile phones to school. Those who still require their phones for some reason must ask their parents and teachers for permission and must hand in their phones during class. The policy aims to improve students’ focus on study and fight addiction to the Internet and games.
Many schools have taken measures to limit students’ phone use on campus. According to Zhou Dandan, an English teacher at Beijing No 20 High School, every classroom in her school has a box to store students’ phones during class.
Li Jisen, an 18-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School, agrees with the new policy. “In general, there are more advantages than disadvantages,” he said. Li believes that regulating (规范)phone use at school is the only way to put the focus back on studies.
Kathy Chen, a parent from Shanghai, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen said it’s more important to cultivate(培养) kids’ ability to self-manage and develop good habits of phone usage.

D. People have different opinions about students carrying mobile phones to school.
( )31.The best title of the passage may be_______.
A. Regulating phone use at school
B. Advantages of Using Smartphones

D. Different Opinions on the New Policy

Facial recognition technology(人脸识别技术)is widely used today. For example, police use it to search for bad guys. It’s also used to unlock phones or doors. Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection(探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising.
Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can tell a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards.Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings-from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy(隐私)group, is one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.
However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn’t store people’s information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or record any videos.
Facial detection technology can tell people’s ______ according to the passage.
A.weight B. feelings C. height D. jobs
33. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to ______

Smartphones have become an important part of our daily lives. But many students spend too much
time playing games, listening to music, watching movies and chatting with friends on their phones and
can’t focus on their studies.
This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebrae(脊
椎 )and even the brain, according to the World Health Organization.
The Ministry of Education has released ( 发布 ) a notice that limits primary and middle school
students to carrying mobile phones to school. Those who still require their phones for some reason must
ask their parents and teachers for permission and must hand in their phones during class. The policy aims to
improve students’ focus on study and fight addiction to the Internet and games.
Many schools have taken measures to limit students’ phone use on campus. According to Zhou
Dandan, an English teacher at Beijing No 20 High School, every classroom in her school has a box to store
students’ phones during class.
Li Jisen, an 18-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School, agrees with the new policy. “In general,
there are more advantages than disadvantages,” he said. Li believes that regulating (规范 )phone use at
school is the only way to put the focus back on studies.
Kathy Chen, a parent from Shanghai, allowed her daughter to take her phone to school. Chen said it’s

Facial recognition technology(人脸识别技术)is widely used today. For example, police use it to
search for bad guys. It’s also used to unlock phones or doors. Now, a similar technology, known as facial
detection(探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising.
Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can tell
a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products
or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so,
stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.Facial detection technology is also placed inside
some large advertising boards.Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five
levels of feelings-from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they
might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
Some are against the idea of using such systems.Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy(隐私)group, is
one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a business could
raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.
However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn’t store people’s information like
names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or
record any videos.
