Soon, my mother found something was wrong.I told her the whole story. My mom told me not to worry and said she had a plan.
The next morning, my mom walked to school with me.Just as we got near my school, we saw Mildred.“Hello, Mildred,” my mom said quietly.Mildred stopped, standing as still as a statue. Her hands and face were bright red.Her oversized coat hung open. There were only two buttons (纽扣) on it.
My mother didn't say anything at first.Instead, she buttoned up Mildred's coat and tidied up her hair.“I'm Marion's mother. We need your help, Mildred.” My mother's hands held Mildred's as she spoke.“Marion doesn't have any brothers or sisters. He needs a good friend who can play with him after classes.Would you like to be Marion's friend, Mildred ”
Mildred's eyes popped (瞪大) and then she nodded.“Oh, thank you!” My mother said.“I just know you are someone I can depend on.” Then she hugged us and left as if nothing unusual had happened.
Mildred and I walked on to school. As I looked over at her, I saw that Mildred was smiling! I'd never seen her smile before. We walked home each day after school together and pretty soon we became best friends.

When in Rome (罗马), do as the Romans do.While studying abroad in the US, a student may live in a host family that provides English language learners with a good chance to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of an American family. Here are some facts about a host family in New York.

Green, as the color of grass and the leaves on trees and most growing plants, is an important color in nature.
What's more, the word “green” means young, fresh and growing. For example, if someone is called greenhorn, that means he has little experience in his job.In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or an ox (牛) whose horns (角) had not developed yet.A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had no experience in war.By the 18th century, a greenhorn had its today's meaning—a person who is new in a job.
It's said that a person who does well in growing plants has a green thumb (大拇指).The expression comes from the early 20th century.A person with a green thumb could make plants grow quickly and well. The Green Revolution (革命) is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains (谷物).It was the result of hard work by agricultural (农业的) scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling. The green-eyed monster (怪物) is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play Othello. It describes a person's unpleasant feeling when others have something he wants but not have. This is jealousy (嫉妒).

Last year my school tried a new way to get students to behave better in class. It is called the “secret student”, and the idea isn't to punish bad behaviour but reward (奖励) good behaviour.
Every morning the teacher chooses a secret student freely-by picking a name from a box. This person stands for the class all day.In all lessons, the teachers watch him or her, and give a tick (钩号) for good behaviour or a cross (叉号) for bad behaviour. At the end of the day, the class is rewarded a point if the secret student has got more ticks than crosses. The key to this system is that if you were the secret student you wouldn't know it, so everyone has to behave well to make sure the class gets a point. The teacher only reports the name of that day's secret student if he or she gets a point, but if the student doesn't get a point, his or her name stays secret.
The idea of the secret student is to make everyone feel their behaviour has a great influence on the whole class, so they can take their responsibility for winning prizes for the class. At last, everybody becomes more responsible, and it brings the class together.
It certainly worked in my class. Our behaviour was much better and we got 108 points, which was enough for a day at a theme park after our exams. We had an amazing time, so it was exactly worth it.

Robots may seem smart, but can they do everything such as picking up a chess piece Let's take a look at some tasks that are easy for kids but difficult for robots.
▲ Pick things up It's not easy to pick things up.When we drop our pencil on the floor, our brains begin to work hard.First we must find the pencil. Then we move our hands to it.But a robot cannot always move its “hand” to the right place. When we touch the pencil, it might roll (滚动) a little bit.A robot cannot easily understand this, either. So, if a pencil is dropped on the floor, a robot will probably roll it around the room.
▲ Get around in large space If someone leaves us alone in a place we've never been, we might feel a bit lost. But we can look around, find a door and get out quickly. But a robot will look everywhere for a door, even on ceilings (天花板) and floors. This is because it's hard for it to understand spaces, especially large, blank (空白的) things such as walls or ceilings.
▲ Understand the world made by people “Common sense (常识)” is what we needn't think or talk about.Because of common sense, we pick up a coffee cup by its handle (把手).We feel whether it has coffee inside, and whether it is hot.A robot may turn the cup upside down.It may hold the hot part of the cup.Scientists have tried teaching robots common-sense rules.Unluckily, even huge databases (数据库) inside them don't help much.

C.Robots are good at picking up small things.
D.The writer's dream of making more robots.

Does technology have an influence on the purity (纯粹) of the Chinese language Of course, the answer is “Yes”!
Many Chinese like using communicating tools to listen to music, show nice photos, have communications with others or even play small games, but most people don't know the Chinese meanings of the abbreviations (缩写), as many English letters have become part of the local lexicon (词典).Some parents are so crazy about English letters that a couple of new parents tried to name their baby “@”.They said the sign used in email addresses reflects their love for the child.
Certainly, the sign “@” is familiar (熟悉的) to Chinese who send emails. They often use the English word “at” to pronounce it, which sounds like the Chinese pronunciation “ai ta”, to Putonghua speakers.
“Nowadays, more and more English abbreviations are being used in Chinese, and are becoming an important part of the modern Chinese language,” said a professor at Communication University of China.“The abbreviations are getting quite popular because they can be used easily,” the professor added.“As more Chinese people learn foreign languages, especially English, in recent years, using abbreviations has become more popular among some educated people.”
Some language scholars (学者) fear that such use of English abbreviations will probably badly influence the purity of Chinese. That will also cause much confusion that we worry about a lot in daily communication.
