Introduction
White lies, which mean little lies usually told to avoid hurting someone's feelings or to manage social interactions smoothly, are a common aspect of human communication. This report explores the frequency, acceptability, and contexts of white lies among teenagers.
Method
A survey was conducted with 342 high school students from various regions to gather data on their experiences and attitudes towards white lies. Participants were asked how often they tell white lies, what they think of white lies and in what contexts they tell white lies.
Results
The survey found that 85% of teenagers admit telling white lies frequently to protect others' feelings or to avoid conflicts. Their attitudes to telling white lies and the most common situations are shown in the following two charts:
Conclusion
White lies play a significant role in the social communication of high school students, helping maintain peace and prevent minor conflicts. While generally seen as beneficial, it is crucial for young individuals to understand the boundaries and potential consequences of dishonesty in their relationships. Educational programs should include discussions on ethics(道德原则) in communication, helping students know when white lies might be acceptable.

Jo Land was surprised when she realized how much her youngest son's school uniform cost. “A jumper was £25. A polo shirt was £15,” she says. “If it was this expensive for us, how on earth could families with three or four children manage ”
In December 2021, Land decided to start her project and she put a box outside her house, with a sign reading, “School uniform drop-off”. She set up a Facebook group and asked people to drop good-quality used uniforms into the box. The operation started to grow almost immediately. “Some weeks I give out up to 48 uniforms,” she says. People drive up and drop the clothing. She sorts through it, keeps it in her “stock room” and posts details about donations on the Facebook group. The first parent to message her gets the items for nothing. Land puts the items in a named bag and then returns it to the box. Recipients(接受者)can come and collect the items at their leisure.
“Being able to access good-quality preloved school uniforms has been a lifeline,” says Kristina, a mother of two. “It's just amazing.”
“Every child going to school deserves to feel smart and proud,” Land says. “We don't want children to go to school feeling negative, because that affects their learning.” Land has noticed that people rarely take away things without giving. Sometimes people leave flowers on the box, or they drop off some outgrown clothes too.
Right now, Land is thinking about all the people in her community who will struggle this winter and she gets so many messages from people who are absolutely desperate, because they cannot afford uniforms for their children. Her determination to ensure that the children can access the uniforms grows ever stronger.

Jamie Goldfarb had finished reading the last bedtime book to her three-year-old son, Kai, when he told her he was hungry. The mum usually complied with such requests since Kai had difficulty feeding as a baby. But this time, as she headed downstairs to fetch a banana, she heard him murmur, “Now that's how you get a fourth book.”
Goldfarb was astonished that her sweet child would tell her a lie, but experts would say that Kai was engaging in complicated cognitive reasoning(认知推理)in his successful attempt at extra storytime. And according to researchers, lying provides a rich workout for developing brains.
Though experts agree that there's no particular area in the brain leading to telling lies, certain regions of the brain are engaged during the construction of a lie. The brain must also juggle(兼顾)emotions, memories, and knowledge about another person, as well as think about alternative paths the lie could take. “It's really a whole network of complex interactions(相互作用),” says Immordino-Yang, a US psychologist. And that's why the ability to lie develops over time, as a young brain develops.
Starting around the age of two, a child is probably going to tell his first lie to keep himself from getting into trouble—and he probably won't be very good at it. Older preschool-age children tend to try to lie to make themselves look better. “They may claim they did something that they didn't do because they want to get praise, or they exaggerate(夸张)because they want the parent to think, ‘Oh wow, you're amazing,'” says Victoria Talwar, author of the book The Truth About Lying. As children enter elementary school, their more-developed brains can craft more complex lies.
Parents might feel disappointed when they catch their children being untruthful, but experts advise avoiding shaming them—or calling them liars. “That won't necessarily promote the behaviour you want,” Talwar says. Instead, she suggests parents focus on the behaviour they'd like a child to exhibit and use language that encourages truth-telling. When the lie is more involved, experts recommend having a direct conversation about it.
28.What do the underlined words “complied with” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Let down. B.Relied on.
C.Gave in to. D.Made use of.
29.What can we learn about telling lies from Paragraph 3

D.It is likely to hold back the development of brains.
30.What is the main reason why older preschool-age children lie
A.To have fun. B.To protect others.
C.To win praise. D.To avoid getting into trouble.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Suggestions on solving children's lies.
B.Possible harm to children if they are called liars.
C.Influence of children's lies on parent-child relationships.
D.Relationships between children's telling lies and their daily behaviour.

O'Brien and Samantha Kassirer from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University conducted two experiments to determine the levels of people's happiness when they gave away money or when they spent it on themselves.
The first experiment involved 96 college students receiving $5 every day for five days. They had to spend the money on the same thing each day. Researchers randomly asked the participants to either spend the money on themselves or give it to someone else, like through a tip or an online donation to a charity. The participants ended each day by reflecting on their spending experience and their overall level of happiness. Regardless of how they spent the money, everyone started off with roughly the same level of self-reported happiness. Those who spent the money on themselves, however, experienced a decline in happiness over the five-day period. The people who gave the money to someone else maintained their happiness levels.
The second experiment conducted online, involved 502 people playing 10 rounds of a word puzzle game. When the players won in a round, they received 5 cents. The participants could either keep the 5 cents or donate it to a charity. After each round, people rated the level of happiness they felt after winning a round. As with the first study, those who gave away the money reported a longer stretch of happiness than those who kept the money for themselves.
As for why people who used the money for themselves aren't happy for so long, the researchers explain that focusing on an outcome—like getting paid—can diminish the experience. When people focus on an action—like giving to charity—they concentrate more on the act itself as a joyful event, explaining why happiness stays more consistent among those who spend the money on others. “If you want to sustain happiness over time, our new research shows that repeated giving, even in the same way to the same people, may make you continue to feel much fresher and more enjoyable,” O'Brien said.
So the next time you think about spending money on yourself, maybe give it to someone in need instead. Your happiness will thank you.
32.What is the finding of the experiments
A.People get more happiness when giving money to others.
B.Those who give money to others like to do it online.
C.Your level of happiness can be influenced by many factors.
D.Those who win rewards are willing to give money to a charity.
33.According to O'Brien, what is the secret of maintaining happiness
A.Saving enough money. B.Trying something new.
C.Keeping on giving. D.Balancing rest and work.
34.Which of the following shows the correct structure of the whole text
A. B. C. D.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Money isn't the key to happiness
B.It is better to give than to receive

How to Have Open Communication
When you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of ways. 36 There are a few things that you can do when you have an open conversation.
37 Be mindful of where and when you need to have a discussion with someone, especially if you are having an important disagreement. Someone is not likely to be open when communicating if you are surrounded by family or out in public. Therefore, have a discussion when it's more convenient for both you and your partner.
Have patience. When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your points across. But this can make communication more difficult because you are so focused on your feelings that you aren't able to focus on what you need to say. Be patient and allow silence to happen. 38
Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying. 39 This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his words accurately. You don't need to agree on all his words, but it is important to understand where they're coming from.
Be honest about your thoughts and your feelings. Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the blow. 40 After all, when we leave out certain details, we're not able to communicate openly. You need to be honest with your partner about your needs and your experiences. By doing so, you're hopefully closer to being able to tackle the issue.
A.Wait for the appropriate time and place.
B.Discuss what you need to communicate openly.
C.Bring something positive into your communication.
D.This could be because we don't want to hurt the other person.
E.Ask questions if you need to and even repeat what he has said.
F.Open communication increases trust and helps bridge differences.
G.Sometimes you need time to think and accurately express yourself.

第二节(满分25分)

The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings(兄弟姐妹)and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people.
However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people.
When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to have a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A lady who was beautifully dressed got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them.
The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
It was two weeks later that we heard screams coming from next door late one night.

Father called an ambulance which arrived within minutes and took the patient to hospital.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
The Person I Admire Most
Dear fellow students,
There are many respectable people around us. And the person I admire most is Mrs Wu, aged 30, my English teacher, who has been teaching English for 6 years.
Mrs Wu is thoughtful and kind to us just like our mothers. Once, one of my classmates got injured unexpectedly, and without hesitation, Mrs Wu took him to hospital for medical treatment. What impresses me most is that she always tries new ways to make her classes lively and interesting. Also, she is very patient with us and always helps us find solutions to problems when we turn to her for help. In my eyes, Mrs Wu is more than our teacher. She's also our best friend. That's why she deserves our respect.
That's all. Thank you!
第二节
One possible version:
It was two weeks later that we heard screams coming from next door late one night. Without hesitation, my father sprang to his feet and rushed out of the house, with the rest of us following him. As we stepped into the next door, we found the boy and the girl crying hopelessly beside their mother, who was lying at the bottom of the staircase where she had fallen. My mother tried to comfort the two kids while my father ran over to check how terrible the situation was by trying to speak to the poor lady, but she wasn't responding to anything.
Father called an ambulance which arrived within minutes and took the patient to hospital. My parents brought the children back to our house. Mother fed them some hot soup to calm their nerves. The kids told us that their father was away on a business trip, so we helped them contact their father who promised them he would catch a plane and join them as soon as possible. So they stayed the night with us. My sister and I had to give up our room for them but we did not mind. Before they went to bed, we shook hands and became friends.
