America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don't feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand. Friendships between us develop more slowly but many become lifelong feeling, extending(延伸) deeply into both families.
There is another different point for us to understand. Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off from our work to act as guides to our friends. _____▲_____Americans can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. So accept their hospitality( at home and enjoy your visit in America!
19. The underlined word“themselves”in paragraph 2 refers to__________.
A. Americans B. the visitors C. the guides D. the hosts
20. What do you think is the best sentence in the blank in Paragraph2
A. Things are nearly the same in America. B. It is opposite in America.
C. Americans regard friends as their family members. D. Americans are more friendly.
21. This passage is most probably written for_________.
A. American students B. Chinese students C. Chinese visitors to America D. American visitors to China

The rockets take astronauts and man-made satellites(卫星) into space. The satellites are used for communication, weather monitoring and research. But how do satellites stay up without falling down
There are two opposite forces acting on the satellites. One of them is the force of gravitation (地心引力), which tries to pull the satellites towards the earth. The other force is created by the rotation(旋转) of the satellite around the earth. This force tries to take the satellite away from the earth. With these two forces, the satellite goes round and round. The gravitational pull of the earth (the force which pulls everything towards the ground) is like a rope which keeps the satellite from flying away.
Everything that goes up has to come down. It is only a matter of time before a satellite comes back to the earth. As time goes by, the satellite loses its speed, which makes the gravitational pull stronger than the force pulling it away. This makes the satellite crash(坠落)down to the earth.
22. Which of the following uses of satellites is NOT mentioned
A. communication B. monitoring the weather condition
C. doing some research D. taking pictures
23. Why can't the satellites fly away
A. Because of the force from the earth. B. Because the satellite is too big.
C. Because of the force created by the rotation of the satellite around the earth.
D. Because people on earth have made ropes to tie the satellites tightly.
24. The satellite will finally crashes down to the earth__________.
A. when it flies faster B. when its speed slows down
C. when people cut the rope D. when there is no electricity in it
25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. There are four forces acting on the satellite
B. The forces of gravitation makes the satellite go round and round.
C. As time goes by, the satellite will fall down
D. The satellite will stay in space forever.

It was midday when I got the call that my grandfather was not well and he was quickly getting worse. My family did not know how long he would stay in the world. I knew I had to get to the hospital to tell him how much I loved him. As I drove to the hospital, I pictured him before I got to tell him how much he meant to me. Trying to fight back the tears, I wanted to stay calm when I saw him.
When I got to the hospital, I hurriedly looked for his hospital room. I found him in a semi-conscious state(半清醒状态). On my knees, I said softly, “Hello, Grandpa.”
Still feeling shy, I decided not to leave his bedside without letting him know. While I asked about how he was, he told me, “I'll be fine, Henry.” although we both knew that wasn't true. Then he asked me with a smile how I was getting on with my life.
Hearing what my grandpa said, I was much moved. I made the decision that I had to show my gratitude for him. As I found all the courage I had, I hold his hand tightly. I cried out, “Grandpa, I just want to let you know how much I love you. I hope you already know that yet I just want to make sure.” By this time, the tears were rolling down my face. All those years of love that I had shut and not let him know, become free.
Smiling, he said, “I know. Thank you for telling me that.” “All I have on this planet is my family and my love for them. If there is anything I could ask of you, I want you to be good to your family, your mother, your father, and your brother. That's all I want of you.”
From then on, I began telling people how much I loved them, cared for them, and respected them. I get in touch with, for example, my babysitter, my barber, to show my appreciation. I godown into the city once a week and serve pizza to the homeless. I wake up every morning and list everything I'm thankful to in my life.
