When Caster Pettway, 67, was a girl, there were always quilts (被子) around. They were on the beds and sofas in her house. Sometimes, her mother would hang a quilt outside to show it off to the neighbors. She always seemed to be making a new one. “And everybody in every house did the same thing,” Pettway says.
Pettway grew up in the 1960s in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, a tiny community on the Alabama River. Now, it is seen as the birthplace of an important art form.
Women in Gee’s Bend took up quilting sometime in the 1800s. They made quilts out of necessity: They needed them to keep warm. They didn’t have proper fabric (织物), so they cut up old clothing and sewed the pieces together. They didn’t use designs seen in traditional quilts. They cut their fabric into large, often irregular (不规则的) shapes. Their large, beautiful quilts were unlike any others in the world.
In 1998, art collector William Arnett saw a photo of a Gee’s Bend quilt. He was so impressed that he visited the town and bought the quilt. He returned again and again. In 2002, Arnett showed these quilts in museums around the country. They took the art world by storm. Many experts compared the Gee’s Bend quilts to paintings by European artists. A writer for the New York Times called the quilts “some of the most wonderful works of modern art America has produced.”
Today, locals are making sure that quilting improves their lives. In February, Gee’s Bend quilters began selling their work online for the first time. Leaders are promoting (宣传) the town as a tourist town. This has encouraged the next generation to carry on the tradition. Pettway says some of her young family members have taken up quilting. “And I’ll tell you what,” she says. “They’re getting pretty good.”
24. Which of the following best describes Gee’s Bend quilts in the 1960s
A. They didn’t sell well. B. They cost a lot to make.
C. They could be seen in every family. D. They weren’t popular with locals.
25. How were Gee’s Bend quilts different from traditional ones
A. They had a unique style.
B. They had very regular shapes.
C. They were made of fine fabric.
D. They were made by famous artists.
26. What did Arnett think of Gee’s Bend quilts
A. They were nothing special.
B. They were works of art.
C. They would go out of style.
D. They would be big business.
27. What can we infer about Gee’s Bend quilting from the last paragraph
A. It will die out in the near future.
B. It will be included in local school courses.
C. It will make no difference to the community.
D. It will be passed down to the younger generation.

The researchers used a machine learning technique known as Artemis named for the Greek hunting goddess to discover that “junk DNA” may play a crucial role in development of tumors (瘤). Scientists have used Al to clarify the human body’s so-called dark genome (基因组) and develop a potentially powerful new approach to cancer detection, monitoring and treatment.
Investigators at Johns Hopkins University in the US have revealed how previously little-studied repeats of genetic code sequences - known as “junk DNA” or dark matter - are associated with tumors. The research, published in Science Translational Medicine on Wednesday, shows how AI and other advanced computing technologies are deepening understanding of diseases and how to deal with them.
The scientists reviewed more than 1,200 distinct types of repeat DNA elements comprising almost half the human genome. They found that many of these junk genetic code pieces not previously linked to cancer had changed during tumor formation. In the researcher’s analysis of 736 genes linked to cancer formation, almost two-thirds contained on average 15 times more the number of repeat DNA sequences than expected. The findings suggested the junk pieces were “not occurring randomly” in cancerous tissues and were instead potentially revealing markers of tumors, Velculescu said. “They end up being gathered around genes that are altered in cancer in a variety of different ways, providing the first glimpse that these sequences may be key to tumor development,” he said.
“While still at an early stage, this research demonstrates how some cancers could be diagnosed earlier by detecting tumor-specific changes in cells collected from blood samples,” said Hattie Brooks, a charity’s research information manager.
Although there is still a long way to go before Artemis could be used in the clinic, it’s always exciting to see new approaches showing potential in detecting cancer sooner.
28. What can we learn from the second paragraph
A. Investigators in the US have revealed how to deal with tumors.
B. AI and other advanced computing technologies can cure cancer.
C. Science Translational Medicine belongs to Johns Hopkins University.
D. The repeats of genetic code sequences were rarely studied by scientists.
29. What did the research find
A. Junk DNA was not linked to cancer.
B. Junk DNA changed tumor formation.
C. Junk DNA appeared randomly in cancerous tissues.
D. Junk DNA was likely to be critical to tumor formation.
30. What does the author intend to do in the last two paragraphs
A. To provide examples. B. To explain concepts.
C. To express expectations. D. To draw comparisons.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Artemis—An AI to Clarify the Human’s Dark Genome.
B. Artemis—A Potential New Approach to Detect Cancer.
C. Artemis—A Machine Learning Technique to Cure Cancer.
D. Artemis—A Greek Hunting Goddess to Discover Junk DNA.

In 2023—2024,“ sport” hunters legally shot and killed five elephants in northern Tanzania. The targeted elephants were among the largest, oldest bulls from the cross- border population studied by Kenya's 51- year Amboseli Elephant Research Project, the longest study of elephants in the world. Unlike in Tanzania, hunting elephants has been banned in Kenya for 50 years. Until now, except for hunting in 1994, permitted hunters in Tanzania have not targeted this population, which is known as one of the last gene pools for enormous ivory(象牙) and the source of the largest tusks(长牙) ever collected. Moving forward, Tanzania should stop issuing hunting permits that lead to the killing of these cross- border elephants.
Because it takes about 35 years for a male elephant to attain the size and experience to breed annually, the majority of calves are fathered by the same few older males sought by hunters. These older animals also form the core structure of male society, initiating and coordinating the movements and activities of closely bonded individuals. Studied since their births in the 1970s and 1980s, the bull elephants killed were not frightened by vehicles holding tourists or researchers, making them easy targets for hunters.
As conservation scientists, many of whom currently work or have worked in the past on the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, we appeal to Tanzania to recognize the scientific value of this cross- border population of elephants and work together with Kenya to develop a harmonized conservation strategy that formalizes a zero- elephant hunting quota(定额) and the promotion of ecotourism. Alive, these“ super tuskers” have great biological, economic, and social value; once they are shot, their contribution ends.
The Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority is expected to announce the next seasons unsustainable quota or“ take” of these rare individuals in July. By declining to provide any permits for the region into which this population migrates, Tanzania can join Kenya in protecting them and giving them the space to move freely.
32. What makes the Amboseli Elephant Research Project special
A. It is the longest study of animals in the world.
B. It has studied elephants longer than the others.
C. It has banned elephant hunting for 50 years.
D. It has collected the largest elephant tusks.
33. What is the main concern over the killing of cross- border elephants
A. It disturbs the social structure and movements of the elephant herd.
B. It changes the way of male elephants feeding young calves.
C. It threatens the relationship between Kenya and Tanzania.
D. It disobeys international rules on cross- border species.
34. What do we know about the elephants killed in Tanzania
A. They were the largest and oldest bulls.
B. They were easily scared off by tourists.
C. They were studied when grown to a large size.
D. They were known for their large ivory and tusks.
35. What do the conservation scientists mainly suggest
A. Tanzania should ban all elephant hunting together with Kenya.
B. Tanzania should limit cross- border elephant hunting to a certain quota.
C. Tanzania should stop providing permits for cross- border elephant hunting.
D. Tanzania should recognize the cross- border elephants’' medical and social value.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Most of us assume those hyper-achievers who are always able to squeeze in their workout, eat healthy foods and pick their kids up on time must have superhuman self-control. But science points to a different answer:____36____ The only catch is that building good habits takes effort and insight. Thankfully, here are a few research-backed steps that can set you on the path to where you want to be.
1.Set a specific goal
The way you define the goal you hope to turn into a habit does matter. Goals like “meditate regularly” are too abstract, research has shown. ____37____Don’t say “I’ll meditate regularly. “ Say, “I’ll meditate for 15 minutes each day. “This is actually key to habit formation, making the task easy to carry out, but it’s often overlooked.
2.Create a detailed, cue-based plan
____38____Scientists have proven that you’ll make more progress toward your goal if you decide not just what you’ll do, but when and where you’ll be cued to do it. Making this kind of plan reduces the chances you’ll forget to follow through because the when and where in your plan will serve as cues to action.
A plan like “I’ll study Spanish for 30 minutes every weekday” is OK. But a detailed, cue-based plan like “Every workday after my last meeting, I’ll spend 30 minutes studying Spanish in my office” is more likely to stick as a habit.
3. ____39____
We’re strongly influenced by the behaviors of the people around us, evidence shows. Want to start running regularly You’re probably better off joining an established running club than asking a few friends who aren’t yet in the habit of jogging to get in shape with you.
However, it’s important not to get too crazy - if you try to train with marathoners when you’re just hoping to work up to a 5K, it can be discouraging.
4Make it fun to repeat
Research has shown you’ll persist longer and ultimately achieve more if you focus on finding ways to make goal pursuit fun. One excellent way is to try “temptation bundling”. Research shows that temptation bundling improves follow-through; it transforms goal pursuit into a source of pleasure, not pain. ____40____
A. Find the right kind of social support.
B. Tell your friends and family about your goals.
C. What we mistake for willpower is often a natural outcome of habit.
D. You’ll benefit from being more specific about what exactly you aim to do and how often.
E. Having a bite-size objective makes it less daunting to get started and easier to see your progress.
F. Now you have established a specific goal, it’s time to think about what will cue you to follow through.
G. For example, watch your favorite show while at the gym or enjoy a beloved podcast while cooking healthy meals.

It was a freezing cold morning in early 2023. I was on my way to work. I'd been training hard for an upcoming marathon, and was limping (跛行) slightly from a pain in my hip. I figured it was nothing serious. But later it turned out to be a hairline stress fracture (应力断裂).
So, when I slipped on the icy New York City sidewalk, I somehow lost my balance and broke my hip. I tried
several times to stand up, but failed each time due to the sharp pain. As more and more passers-by gathered around, I felt extremely embarrassed.
Just at that time, a stranger emerged from the crowd and knelt beside me. All I remembered was seeing her kind face, all covered up, with a big hat and scarf. She pushed everyone out of the way and said,“I've got this. "
The woman introduced herself as Sharon Evans. As she helped me up, all I could think about was that I needed to get to work. But I was in terrible pain, and could barely stand. Seeing this, Sharon told me to stay put while she called a taxi.
“No, you don't have to do that. I'm sure you have places to be, please don't, I can do it, " I said to her. "No, the taxi is arriving anytime,” she replied.
Once the taxi arrived, Sharon supported me into the taxi and went with me. I tried to tell her that it wasn't necessary. But she was persistent. To be honest, I was secretly relieved to have her company.
When the taxi pulled up to the hospital, Sharon took charge again. “You know what, I'm going to go get the wheelchair for you and I'll wheel you in.” I hesitantly said, “Please don't do that. You've done so much.”

第一节
Dear Editor,
I am Li Hua, a high school student from a city recently ravaged by Typhoon Bebinca. I’m writing to express my deepest gratitude to all the selfless volunteers and firefighters.
The destruction is overwhelming, with fallen trees and shattered glass crossing the streets, and many homes reduced to rubble. Our lives were thrown into chaos with the disruption of utilities. Yet, amidst the ruins, hope emerged. Our volunteers and firefighters have been working tirelessly, day and night, to clear the roads, rescue trapped residents, and distribute food and water. (They have become beacons of light in our hearts, guiding us towards safety and hope.) It is you who have breathed life back into our city, and it is you who have shown us that no matter how great the challenge, unity can conquer all.
Thank you once again, our heroes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写
My condition was serious and I needed an immediate operation. Sharon didn't just go into the hospital with me. She helped me fill out the intake paperwork, paid the fee and even took me to the bathroom. She also tried to contact my family, but they were outside of the city and couldn't go back in time. Still Sharon chose to stay with me. I tried to persuade her to leave, to get to work. And each time, She refused. Once it was time for me to be seen by doctors,
Sharon left.
Six months later. Ifully recovered and managed to get her address. I decided to thank her in her presence. As I got to her house, I gently knocked the door. It was Sharon who came out and opened the door. I could see surprise in her eyes. “Sharon, it's me, Lauren. I've come to thank you for saving my life!” She hugged me and said.
“I wish I could have done more for you.” Such simple words really carried me away. It is this total stranger who shows me the faith in humanity.

M: Do you know the rate per night for a single room with a bath there
W: Well, a single with a bath at the moment would cost between $70 and $80.
M: I see. Can you tell me what the Imperial is like (15)
W: It is a four-star hotel. Ours is better known than the Imperial, but the Imperial is less expensive than our hotel. (15)
M: One last thing, do you know their telephone number (16)
W: Yes, it is 61540928.
M: Thank you very much. Good-bye.
