Zhang Jiacheng lost the lower half of his right arm in an accident at the age of 5. Life used to be really hard for him.
Now, the 14-year-old boy from Yunfu city, Guangdong, has gone popular for his basketball skills in a video on Sina Weibo. “I want to be a popular basketball player, playing more games and letting more people know me,” Zhang says.
In the video, Zhang plays with one hand against his match, who is taller and stronger, and makes a shoot, driving the fans crazy. His videos have been watched about 32 million times. Some Weibo users found his story inspiring, commenting (评论) that “God knows what he has been through”. On a warm summer afternoon, Tina is working close to the ground. Wet soil has gotten on her clothes and her hair. Tina smiles a lot when she is working in the corner of the Hanapepe salt patch (盐场) on the west side of Kauai.
Tina drives about an hour to get here. “It’s hard work. But for me, it’s also play,” Tina said, adding with a laugh, “I play in the mud all day.” Tina’s family is one of 22 families that have devoted themselves to promote the cultural tradition of “paakai”, the Hawaiian word for salt.
This is one of the last remaining salt patches in Hawaii. The salt produced here can be traded or given away, but it is not to be sold. Hawaiians use it for cooking, healing and protection. However, this place has been suffering many kinds of threats (威胁) over the past decade, including social development, pollution from a nearby airport, and sand erosion from vehicle traffic and rubbish thrown by visitors.
Besides, climate change poses a big threat to salt-making with rising sea levels and changing weather situations. In 2023, the salt-making season lasted only three months, from July to September, because it rains a fot. During a good year, work often begins in May and ends in November.
Malia Nobrega-Olivera is an educator who leads efforts to protect centuries-old traditions. Her grandfather played a great role in forming a group of salt-making families called Hui Hana Paakai. “The organization’s goal”, Malia said, “is to protect the traditional practice of producing salt by hand, which has been passed down for many years.”

The first China-Central Asia Summit (中国一中亚峰会) was held in Xi’ an, China on 18 May and 19 May. Xi’ an was the capital of the Tang Dynasty (called Chang’an then) and the starting point of the Silk Road.
