Ancient Egyptian Sports
Many of the sports in ancient Egypt are still practiced today. In fact, many of the basic elements of sports, like rules and uniforms, were first used by Egyptians. The sports had important functions in society. Some were played for fun and fitness. Others were played to make stronger warriors and leaders.
The first group of sports, mostly for fun, was those like rowing, hunting, and the high jump. Hunting and fishing could be enjoyed by the kings and regular people. The same was for rowing. Rowing needs a lot of strength. Teams of people got into boats and followed the commands of a leader. He would give regular, sharp calls to tell them when to row. This technique is still used for rowing teams today.
Another popular game was tug-of-war. This was a game where two teams had to pull each other over a line. If a team fell forward, they lost. This game is still played today in the country.
The second group of sports prepared people for the army and the temple. These included boxing, horse riding, running, and archery. They were ways to work on skills for fighting. They were also ways to work on mental and spiritual power. Running a marathon was a good example of this. The king would run to show he had the mental strength to guide his country.
Hockey was another Egyptian game. There are pictures where people are entombed that show the game. Players held tree branches with a bent end, just like modern hockey sticks. They had to hit a ball made of leather that was brightly colored.
These sports were a part of Egyptian culture. They kept the people happy and fit. The basic rules were created thousands of years ago. They are still seen in some form today.

The weather was bad and the students had to stay indoors. As they couldn't play outdoors, they were unhappy, and some even got into fights from time to time.
Some of the teachers, at the college asked Dr. Naismith to invent a game so that the students might have something to play with. It was not easy to invent such a game because it had to be played indoors, and the court was not very large.
Dr. Naismith thought for a few days and invented a kind of ball game. It was a fast, wonderful game with much moving and passing of the ball. It was played between two teams. To make a score, the ball had to be thrown into the basket ten feet (英尺) above the floor on the wall. At each end of the court, there was such a basket. Many people think sports are just for winning and honor, but there is a lot more you can gain from (get from) them. I have learned over the past years that sometimes when I lose, I get a lot more out of it than winning. Also, I find a lot of times in sports, people are getting too caught up (深陷其中) in the game instead of just having fun. The real purpose of sports is to have fun and learn life lessons along the way.
I greatly encourage you to be a part of the school sports. Even if you are not the best, you can still have fun. Sports give people a great and healthy way of spending free time, instead of lying around playing with cellphones. Sports also give us a sense of achievement. There isn't a better feeling than to have done something fun and productive for my day.
I think that we all need sports to give us courage. If we try hard in sports, we usually do well. If we did the same in study, we would all be champions. Another reason why I encourage you to play sports is that it's just fun. Without sports, our lives would just be boring. So as you may be able to tell, sports are amazing!
Our coaches not only teach us to play sports, but show class (风度) and good sportsmanship (运动员精神) while playing them. It's never fun to have the winner to rub it in your face (炫耀) when you lose. That's why our coaches teach us to show class when we lose; also, when coaches get onto you, don't get down. They only want to see you improve and learn from what they say. In fact, if they don't shout loudly when you do badly, you should start worrying, because they are giving up on you.
Overall, sports are great! They bring out the best and worst of us. You can gain a lot from them! However, we can't let sports get too serious to where it brings down all the fun. So to have the most fun in sports, you just need try your best and not worry so much about the winning or losing.

A.Are we too caught up B.To win or to gain
C.Are sports really great D.For honor or for health
