Search engines, virtual worlds, the Internet — ever get the feeling you’re living in a science fiction fantasy Well indeed you are. For more than a century, inventors have been driven to create what sci-fi writers have boldly imagined before.
As a boy in India, Amit Singhal dreamed of space. “Those were my favorite times as a little child on a hot summer day, sitting in a room watching Star Trek,” he says. Singhal now works at Google, where he is in charge of maintaining Google’s search algorithms (算法). “But my main job is to dream about what searching would look like a few years from now,” he says. And what do those dreams look like Singhal was fascinated by the way Star Trek characters simply talk to a computer to find out about almost anything, so now he’s working on Google’s voice-recognition search products.
Singhal isn’t unique. Scratch the surface (作肤浅的探讨) of many inventors in Silicon Valley, and there’s a kid who loved science fiction underneath. “Teenagers read these things, they fall in love with the novel, they get inspired by the technology and they keep it in the back of their minds till they’re about 30, and then they build it,” technology forecaster (预言家) Paul Saffo says.
The grandfather of science fiction is probably Jules Verne, whose novels have inspired whole generations of people. And ever since Verne, there’s been a long list of inventions that come from science fiction. Buck Rogers inspired a generation of scientists excited about space exploration. William Gibson dreamed up the Internet while writing Neuromancer on a manual typewriter. Neal Stephenson predicted virtual worlds in his novel Snow Crash. One of his readers Philip Rosedale, built the virtual world Second Life based on the “Metaverse” from the novel.
Science fiction helps engineers see the meaning of their work, says Snow Crash author Stephenson. It makes it “possible for these people to see a realized vision of what all of their efforts could eventually lead to.”
8. What can we learn about Singhal
A. He has shown less enthusiasm for space.
B. He has strongly criticized the movie Star Trek.
C. He has dreamed of becoming a science fiction writer.
D. He has been exploring future possibilities of search engines.
9. What does Saffo say about science fiction
A. It plants seeds of creativity in teenagers’ hearts.
B. It helps readers understand real human issues.
C. It fails to live up to its full potential.
D. It should be based on scientific facts.
10. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed
A. By presenting writers’ achievements.
B. By analyzing the reasons for technological progress.
C. By making comparisons between fiction and reality.
D. By giving examples of innovations driven by science fiction.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Jules Verne imagined the world ahead
B. Science fiction inspires engineers to build our future
C. Why teens are fascinated by science fiction
D. Why science fiction writers are so good at predicting the future
D
Every day, the residents of the Indian . town of Kalka wake up to the sound of a train’s whistles. But what moves out of the station is no ordinary train. It’s so small that it could be part of a toy set. In fact, it is one of India’s “toy trains”, a group of trains named for their tiny features --- small engines, few carriages (车厢) and narrow train tracks.
The trains also share a common history. All started working more than a hundred years ago. At the time, India was a part of the British Empire. British officials lived with their families in cities like Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Delhi. To escape the summer heat, they traveled to towns in hilly areas. Reaching the hill stations involved a long and tiring journey. So the officials built the toy trains to make their journey smoother and faster.
The trains also helped transport goods The Nilgiri Mountain Railway carried Chinese tea up to the Nilgiris. This region is still one of India’s largest tea- growing areas.
How did workers build these railways Workers blew tunnels through mountains. They built bridges over deep valleys. They laid the tracks in a series of twists and turns (弯弯曲曲处). Some shapes are unique to each train. The Darjeeling Railway, for instance, turns sharply to avoid weather-beaten land. At points, it goes backward to go forward.
Because of their long history and special engineering, the toy train networks are treasured heritage sites. They are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. People from around the world come to see them. In addition, many movie scenes have been filmed with these trains in. Such scenes have proven very popular, making the trains an important part of popular culture in India. Due to the trains’ heritage status, nothing can be changed, unless absolutely necessary. So, most stations and carriages remain unchanged. Keeping the railways running is costly. Local businessmen have privately offered to provide funds, but the Indian Railway, which owns the toy trains, opposes this assistance. Its employees worry that privatization would cost them their jobs. Despite these problems, the toy trains continue to run.
12. What is a feature of the toy trains
A. They have numerous grand carriages.
B. They travel smoothly and soundlessly.
C. They move faster than ordinary trains.
D. They run on narrow tracks.
13. Why did British officials build the toy trains
A. To boost the local economy.
B. To transport foreign goods.
C. To ease the busy traffic in India.
D. To make their journey more convenient.
14. Which best describes the engineering of the railways of toy trains
A. Cheap.
B Demanding.
C. Short- sighted.
D. Environment-friendly.
15. What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph
A. The toy trains are of great value.
B. The use of toy trains will be expanded.
C. The cost of repairing toy trains has been brought down.
D. The local businessmen will take charge of the toy trains.

At age 10, I stood in front of my new class, my new classmates looking at me with mild interest as my teacher introduced me. I joined in the middle of the school year. There were 41 students in my new class. I was the 42nd.
All my classmates sat in pairs except for this one girl, Kate. I went and sat down next to her and gave her a small, uncertain smile. She smiled in return. The class started and we didn’t talk until lunch time. At lunch time, I pulled out my lunch box, packed by my mother. It had fried rice with home-made cakes and a small box of fruits. Clearly my mom had spent time packing this yummy lunch. This girl took out a small box with bread butter inside. In India, it’s pretty rare for kids to just get bread butter for lunch. The only time I had bread butter for lunch was if my mom was unwell. So I thought that was what the problem here was. I offered her a small part of my lunch and forgot all about it. The next day, she again had bread butter. Well, I thought, her mother might have fallen ill, so she was taking time to recover. I again offered her a part of my lunch. This went on for a week. Then one day, I asked the one question that I shouldn’t have. “Is your mom not well ”
In fact, I wasn’t prepared for the answer. Later, I knew that her mother, who worked in a supermarket, was in poor health. She constantly stayed at home with no income. I didn’t know what to do. So I did the most obvious thing. I went home and told my mom that my lunch wasn’t enough and I still felt hungry after eating it. My mom started packing a bigger lunch. And in school, I’d tell Kate that my mom had packed me a lunch too big, so could she please help me finish it Then I asked her what her favorite dish was. “Naan,” she whispered.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled.

The trains also helped transport goods. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway carried Chinese tea up to the Nilgiris.
A. Cheap.
B. Demanding.

The event, held in the schoolyard last Wednesday, witnessed a variety of activities, including regular field and track events. However, I was most impressed by the finals of the 4×400 meter relay, which I took part in as the final runner. Believe it or not, I poured all I had to the final lap and we finally won.
What an eventful day! The event represents the important role athletic activities play in strengthening physical and mental health. I can't wait to share more with you when we meet again.
第二节
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At age 10 I stood in front of my new class, my new classmates looking at me with mild interest as my teacher introduced me.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I moved out of that school soon after and didn’t stay in touch with Kate.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled. Naan was not a common dish in our household, and my mom wasn’t sure if she could prepare it, but she promised she would try. The next day, I was thrilled to find that my lunch box now contained a piece of Naan, and I eagerly shared it with Kate. Seeing her smiling face made me feel really happy inside. From that day on, my mom would occasionally pack some Indian delicacies for me to share with Kate, and I would be more than happy to do so.
I moved out of that school soon after and didn't stay in touch with Kate. However, this experience taught me an important lesson about kindness and understanding. Often we judge people too quickly, without realizing their underlying struggles. While it may seem small, sharing my lunch with Kate helped me to connect with her on a deeper level and to understand her better. As I grew older, I would try to apply this lesson in my daily life – to be a little kinder, a little more empathetic, and a little more understanding of people's struggles.
