My daughter is 14, and she thinks everything I do makes her cringe (尴尬) and likes telling me how awful my outfits (装束) are. So, when I went away for five weeks for a writing residency in Europe, I assumed I’d get few text messages from her, but she called me every single day.
The first few times she called, I assumed she was calling because she needed something. When the calls continued, I thought she was buttering me up so that I’d send her money. After a week, I realized she was just calling to talk. She was phoning in the afternoons after school, typically the time she’d be walking into the house.
Firstly, this surprised me because our after-school routine (常规) is pretty run-of-the-mill: She comes in and I shout at her to shut the door so the flies don’t get in. She and her younger brother have a snack and I ask how their days have been. Sometimes they’ll say something, but often it’s just a shrug (耸肩) . Then I’m driving them to netball, basketball or other activities.
Yet in insisting (坚持) that we touch base in the same way as we normally do when we are physically together, my daughter was showing me that in those moments after school we were connecting. For her, the time spent together is a way of making sense of the world. I hadn’t seen this at all. I focused too much on the administrative (管理的) duties of motherhood to fully appreciate the meaning of our shared time. So there it was. Simply by calling me constantly while I was away, my child taught me to realize that love is quietly joyful.
As many parents know, kids teach us as much as we teach them. The wisdom of children lies in their ability to feel what matters; it lies, too, in their ability to share what they know to be true without using fancy words. My wise child changed the way I look at the everyday. She also confirmed what I have thought for some time now: my outfits make her cringe, but my love does not.
4. Why did the author’s daughter keep calling her

6. What influence has the author’s daughter had on her
A. She has realized the true meaning of love. B. She has become more patient than before.
C. She has discovered the value of sharing. D. She has improved her taste in clothes.
7. What is the author’s attitude toward her daughter now
A. Regretful. B. Proud. C. Hopeful. D. Angry.

The 20th century saw the world readapt itself to the introduction of the car. Streets were widened and shops needed mass parking. The modem city is built in the image of the car. But what if it didn’t have to be like that Dr. Robert Martin, Head of Mobility at Danish architectural company JAJA, believes we have to go back to the drawing board of cities. JAJA has worked on several plans for ways to remove cars from cities and redesign city spaces.
Martin advocates for the idea of the “15-minute city”. It’s about creating several centres within a city. Removing the primacy (首位) of the downtown centre, people go to their own local centre which has all their regular facilities (设施).
JAJA is based out of Copenhagen, a city which is known for its lack of cars and bike-friendly facilities. Martin notes that honour is somewhat unearned. “Over the last 20 years, Copenhagen’s seen an increasing amount of car ownership in the city centre.” Still, the ideal of Copenhagen is the origin of the change JAJA wants to see in more cities. Put them on a “mobility diet”, Martin suggests, and reprioritize lanes (重新确定车道优先顺序) for cars and for people to walk and cycle in. Where you aren’t creating cycle routes, there’s also the opportunity to build green spaces to absorb (吸收) CO2 and heat.
He points out that it’s about reducing cars, not removing them completely. The need to travel privately around countries and the transport of goods into cities can’t be wished away by the desire for a better city. So, Martin suggests that cars can be shared. Zipcar is a popular car-sharing app in London. Then there’s the way goods are brought into cities. Trucks can travel into city centres at night to avoid traffic, and for smaller packages (包裹), “London’s one of the leaders in terms of bike delivery,” he says.
What does the future look like It might be interesting to question how our cities will continually change.
8. Which is a “15-minute city”
A. A city with wide streets. B. A city with enough parking.
C. A city with a downtown centre. D. A city with easily accessible centres.

C. It has a quiet city centre. D. It is not car-friendly.
10. What suggestion does Martin put forward for reducing car numbers
A. Night-time private car use. B. Widespread bike-sharing service.
C. Green small package delivery. D. Continuous improvement of Zipcar.
11. What’s the structure of the text (P=Paragraph)

To date, companies have used social networks by setting up Facebook and LinkedIn pages. Many view these as an add-on to their current marketing mix. Many companies use social networks to give notice when they have new products or are having a big sale. Some companies are using new software to search social networks for discussions, comments and complaints by customers and workers about their company and products and services in order to get some great information that they use to improve their products and increase sales.
But the biggest value that social networks offer goes beyond that. Social networks have inspired companies to develop a collaborative mindset (合作思维) to create value. They understand that ideas can come from anyone, anywhere and at any time.

More than 1,000 participants from over 50 countries signed up to solve Goldcorp’s problems.
Submissions came from participants worldwide, many not trained in mining. This open-source innovation network proved to be valuable hitting 110 targets worth more than $3 billion. By opening the information to a wider network, the company benefited from the collaboration of knowledge banks all over the world.
The old ways of staying within the four walls to solve problems and developing products, services and solutions in isolation (孤立地) are panies of all sizes can start by setting up a network of experts, partners and customers within the company. There are even technology platforms (平台) that can be applied to help build this network so that you can get started immediately if you want. So stop thinking of social networks as just another way of marketing. Their next development is already underway and holds much promise for the business world.

A. Throwing out the old business model. B. Creating their own technology platforms.
C. Building their own collaborative networks. D. Having confidence in the business world.

A.Helping keep the home running smoothly raises a child’s confidence. Just don’t expect perfection. This is a learning process(过程), and children will develop their skills as time passes. Praise your child’s effort in each task, rather than focusing on the result. Small achievements lead to bigger ones.
B.After the age of 16 years, many teens take on part-time work or a summer job, which is fantastic. But it’s not a reason to stop helping with home chores(家务杂活). Can you imagine if as parents we didn’t keep up with household jobs because we “had to go to work” Make sure your teen knows that the work within the home is as valuable as the work outside the home.
C.As your child enters their teen years, household chores still play an important part in their overall development. Chores play a role in the busy household and develop important life skills. Caring for shared spaces within the home also develops the idea of shared teamwork that will last into adulthood.
D.Household chores and responsibilities are integral to a child’s development. Young children are naturally willing helpers. Take advantage of this and develop a culture of teamwork in your home.
E.You may wonder if your teen can perform the household tasks. Just remember, if your teen can use a smartphone, they can work out how to use a washing machine and a dishwasher. If your teen has too many extracurricular activities, consider the big picture. Many of our teenagers are overscheduled. However, baseball practice doesn’t make anyone “too busy” to take out the garbage(垃圾).

Many companies use social networks to give notice when they have new products or are having a big sale. Some companies are using new software to search social networks for discussions, comments and complaints by customers and workers about their company and products and services in order to get some great information that they use to improve their products and increase sales.
