Clarissa Barton, known as Clara, would later make the history of her own as the “Angel of the Battlefield” in the Civil War and as the founder of the American Red Cross disaster-relief agency. Clara Barton’s long life was dedicated to(致力于) serving others.
She was born in Massachusetts on December 25, 1821, the youngest of Stephen and Sarah Barton’s five children. She became a teacher at age 17 and started two schools, but left teaching when a man was hired on twice her salary (工资). In her 30s, she moved to Washington, D. C. and joined the United States Patent Office as a recording clerk, the first woman in that role. But her boss didn’t agree with women working in the government, so she was demoted (降职). These experiences led to Barton’s later support for civil (公民的) rights.
After the Civil War began in 1861, she repeatedly transported food and other supplies to where the need d was greatest. She got the nickname “Angel of the Battlefield" after tirelessly tending Union (Northern) soldiers wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in Culpeper County, Virginia, in August 1862.
When the war ended, Barton launched an effort to find missing Union soldiers. Over four years, more than 22,000 were identified. She also helped to educate people.
Extremely tired, Barton went to Europe to rest. In Switzerland, she learned of a new organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross. She returned to the United States and in 1881 formed the American Red Cross. She led the group for 23 years, providing help for people who suffered floods, earthquakes, fires, droughts, and tornadoes around the world.
Even at age 83, she wasn’t done. Her final years were spent starting an association (协会) that promoted first-aid instruction and emergency preparedness. She died at her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, now a national historic site, in April 1912. Her last words were “Let me go. Let me go.”

Cows love having an open area of grassland. But in some parts of the world, this is only feasible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being kept inside is not always enjoyable for the cows, and I their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cow owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specially. The program simulates (模拟)grassland in summer and was designed for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cows see red most easily but have a hard time telling the difference between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia-where the VR headsets were first developed by vets—found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
The cow owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the moods of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it helps lift their spirits. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being used around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets s were made specifically for the “structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the animals.
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow’s mood and its milk production. They said, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly.”

“When you laugh, you change and when you change, the whole world changes around you,” said Dr Madan Kataria.
World Laughter Day is an annual celebration that takes place all over the world, to raise awareness about the many healing(治愈) benefits of laughter. The event is celebrated on the first Sunday of May each year, and in 2024, it is on May 5th.

They have a variety of amusement programmes like music dance and laughter contests, etc. People with most infectious, natural and effortless laughter are the winners. During this day in India, laughter club members often do peace march. After walking some distance, they stop to do a few Laughter Yoga exercises and then move on. Last night it snowed heavily. Ned opened his window, coughing from the effort, and stuck a ruler into the snow.
“Four inches,” he said. “Four!”
As he said it, he heard cheers from downstairs. The school headmaster must have a ruler too, he thought. His brother Jack and sister Sara were glued to the school news, and they happily shouted that school was canceled. Ned’s school usually had one snow day each year. A snow day is a rare and beautiful thing, something special, something not to be missed.
Ned pressed his hand to his forehead (前额). It didn’t feel hot. He got so excited. He took out all the heaviest clothes he could find, and put on two sweaters. a pair of sweatpants and snow pants, and a woolen hat. He wanted to go outside to play, but his mom stopped him. She checked his temperature, and it was 38 5℃ She assured (向......保证) him that once it dropped to 37C, he could play in the snow. She asked him to eat soup and rest while she took Jack and Sara to the park Ned, though upset, watched them leave and eventually ate his soup before going to bed as he was very tired.
Ned woke up to see snow still falling outside his window, He wasn’t sweating. He was feeling pretty good! He took his temperature, and it was 37.8℃. Better Much better! Excited, Ned pulled on his pants, sweaters and hat. He told his mom the good news, but she said he could play in the snow only when his temperature dropped to 37C.

ice water, and then put the thermometer (温度计) into it.

During the vacation, I acquired a great deal of knowledge. Wrapping rice dumplings is one of the most useful skills that has left a deep impression on me.
When I first attempted to wrap rice dumplings, I considered it complicated and failed to master the key points of the skill. Having watched my mother’s demonstration, I began to imitate her wrapping method step by step---using long leaves to get fit, shaping the rice dumpling which seems like a pyramid, and tying it tightly with a tiny long rope. To my great relief, I finally made it through persistent effort.
Not until then did I realize that so long as I am willing to try out constantly, all the efforts are to pay off sooner or later.
67.读后续写
Ned’s mom found Ned had a temperature of 30°C. She was very surprised, but quickly realized Ned’s trick. She jokingly said, “Oh dear, Ned, we have to get you to the hospital!” Ned nervously asked why. His mom showed him the number. Ned’s face turned slightly red at the unexpectedly low temperature. His plan to lower it didn’t work out as he expected, making him feel a bit silly. Seeing his expression, his mom laughed, saying Ned might be the first kid to cheat and intentionally lower his temperature.
Feeling ashamed, Ned began taking off his hat until he felt his mom’s hand stopping him. “Let’s go outside,” she said, her tone now playful. “For a lie that bad, you deserve a fifteen-minute snowball fight.” Hearing these words, Ned’s eyes lit up with excitement. He thanked his mom with a sheepish grin, called Jack and Sara, and they all rushed outside. The snow was still falling softly, making a perfect background for their laughter. They happily played in the snow, having a fun and carefree snowball fight, enjoying the happy day off.

28.词句猜测题。根据第一段中“In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth.(在冬季,天气可能会变得太冷,以至于奶牛无法安全地待在室外,因此它们会被安置在大型的农场建筑内以保暖)”可知,在某些地方只有夏天才能为牛提供开阔的草地区域,即这种做法只有在夏天才可能实现。因此,划线词feasible在这里的意思最接近于选项B“Possible(可能的)”。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia —— where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production, which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.(来自俄罗斯莫斯科一个农场的报告——那里最初是由兽医开发出VR头盔的——在2019年发现,使用VR头盔的奶牛焦虑减少,情绪得到改善。这导致了牛奶产量的增加,从每天5.8加仑增加到了7加仑)”可知,佩戴VR头盔的结果是奶牛的产奶量相应地增加了。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段中“When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the moods of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it helps lift their spirits. They are less stressed,” he said.(当Kocak给他的奶牛戴上VR头盔时,他发现他的奶牛情绪有所改善。“它们看到一片草地,这有助于让它们的心情变好。它们的压力减少了,”他说)”可知,他对VR头盔的效果感到满意。故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a connection between a cow’s mood and its milk production. They said, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the amount of milk increases greatly.”(俄罗斯联邦农业部表示,研究表明奶牛的情绪与其牛奶产量之间存在联系。他们说,“不同国家的奶牛农场的例子表明,在平静的环境中,牛奶的产量会大大增加。”)”可知,奶牛的情绪与牛奶产量之间存在联系,再结合全文内容,可以推断出VR眼镜程序背后的概念是奶牛情绪良好时能够产生更多的牛奶。故选D。
