Gabriel is a barber (理发师). Though born without hands, he was able to grow up, happy and independent. He always had the support of friends and family. In fact, his inspiration (启发灵感的
人) for such a line of work was his mother, who is a hairdresser. At 14, he started working as a barber, and learned all the skills he needed. Although he first saw it as a hobby, Gabriel quickly decided this was the profession he wanted to work in.
"I've learned to serve a glass of water by myself. I've learned to ride a bike, a motorbike, and even to drive a car," Gabriel said about growing up with his serious disability.
His family soon helped him open his first barbershop, which he worked at for one and a half years. There, he met Zlatan Gomez, the president of Argentina Corta, an organization for barbers to connect, do charity work in the neighborhood and teach hairdressing to those who are interested. Gabriel is now part of Argentina Corta. He tries his best to make a connection with the neighborhood and make a difference, offering his services to people so they can pick up the skills they need.
Maybe Gabriel's perseverance (竖韧) comes from the fact that he's had to overcome so much in his life, but perhaps his energy also comes from being a father. Gabriel has a son named Tobias. "He gives me power. I want to raise him with this message: There is nothing you can't do. You have to improve yourself day by day," he says.
Whatever problem you face, you can usually solve it by turning to a new mindset (思维模式), making changes and never giving up. As the famous painter Vincent van Gogh once said, "If you hear a voice within you say 'you can't paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."

Imagine taking a flying taxi to the airport, or flying over crowded city streets in the rush hour, getting where you want to go much faster than you could in a car. Believe it or not, you might be able to do these things sooner than you think.
An air taxi is a small aircraft — something like a mix between a
helicopter and a drone (无人机). Air taxis don't need a long runway like
planes do. They can go straight up and down, like a helicopter.
These exciting new vehicles (车辆) are taking a big step forward.
In June, the FAA — the government group in control of America's skies — agreed to allow a company called Joby Aviation to start testing their new air taxi.
Joby's air taxis will be flown by a pilot, and can carry four other passengers. They can fly as fast as 200 mph and can go around 100 miles before they need to be recharged (充电).
Compared with helicopters, Joby says their taxis are both quieter and cheaper. The company expects to ask for about $3 a mile at first. But over time, they hope to bring the price down to less than $l per mile.
Joby isn't the only company developing air panies around the world are working on similar vehicles. France even plans to use a few air taxis for the Paris 2024 0lympic Games.
But there's still a lot to do before air taxis become common. For one thing, governments need to make rules about where, when, and how these taxis can fly. And as exciting as the idea of flying taxis is, some people have worries about them. The taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they'll still be adding noise and traffic to our skies. Some people worry that only rich people will be able to afford to use them.
31. What's the second paragraph mainly about
A. What an air taxi looks like. B. When air taxis first hit the market.
C. How an air taxi quickly gets its work done.
D. Why air taxis need to cut the cost of transportation.

A. Air taxis have already been put into use.
B. A great number of pilots have received training.
C. Joby Aviation is allowed to test their new air taxis.
D. Little progress has been made on the development of air taxis.
33. What do we know about Joby's air taxis
A. The FAA thinks highly of Joby's air taxis.
B. Joby takes the lead in producing air taxis.
C. Air taxis will be tested in France next year.
D. There's enough room for five people in the taxi.
34. Why are some people worried about the air taxis
A. They won't be popular among customers.
B. They are likely to cause noise pollution.
C. It may cost a lot of money to develop them.
D. Governments may make rules to control them.
35. What's the best title for the text
A. Goodbye, Taxis B. History of Flying Taxis
C. Advantages of Flying Taxis D. Flying Taxis Are Starting to Take Off
D
Your friend's birthday is over for another year, and you might still feel disappointed because the gift you gave wasn't warmly received.
This happens from time to time. We give others presents out of kindness. However, our gifts may make the receiver uncomfortable. 36 That afternoon, I was out for dinner with my son. At the restaurant, I met with our former neighbor and we said hello to each other. After dinner, I went to pay. However, the waiter explained the neighbor had already paid for our dinner. It was such a kind act. However, I felt uncomfortable — almost as if I'd been driven into a comer.
37 But both of them can give us uncomfortable feelings. Sometimes when we buy gifts for others, it might be more about us and less about the receiver. A friend recently told me her husband bought her a costly cup that could boil water at different temperatures for different kinds of tea. My friend doesn't drink tea. 38 So this was one of those presents that were more about the desires(欲望) of the giver.
Then there is the gift or generous (慷慨的) act, which is so "expensive" that the receivers don't think they deserve (值得) it. 39 Of course you can give really expensive gifts if you know it's not going to make the receiver feel uncomfortable. But do think about what we're giving and why we are giving them.
In the coming year, you'll be buying gifts for others, or offering help to those in need. 40
However, check your reasons and remember sometimes the smallest and most personal gifts can be the best choice.
A. This can provide many people with great joy.
B. Perhaps they feel that they can't give anything in return.
C. What I mentioned above is certainly different from giving gifts.
D. Her husband, however, loves a cup.
E. This makes me think of the thing that happened the other day.

五、书面表达
An Unexpected Experience
Most of the time, we want things to happen as planned. However, the unexpected things happen from time to time. One day, I planned to go to the park with my friends. We were going to have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful weather. But when I was about to leave home, it suddenly started to rain heavily. I was very disappointed as our plan was ruined.
At first, I felt really frustrated. But then I thought maybe this was an opportunity for something different. I decided to stay at home and read a book that I had always wanted to read but never had the time. As I started reading, I got completely immersed in the story and actually had a great time.
From this experience, I learned that when things don't go as expected, we should try to look at it from a different perspective. Instead of getting upset, we can find alternative ways to make the situation better. Sometimes, the unexpected can lead to new and interesting experiences that we might not have had otherwise. So, we should be more flexible and adaptable when facing the unexpected in life.
