Text 10
Today,I’ll talk about a great artist,Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci, near Florence,Italy. At 15,Leonardo went to work with a famous artist. At the age of 20,he was already a master painter.Although da Vinci was a great painter,he never gave up his interest in other subjects. For example,he drew a flying machine 400 years before the airplane was invented. In all,da Vinci designed more than 1,000 inventions. As a matter of fact,da Vinci started many projects that he never finished. He was always more interested in planning projects than doing them.He often quickly lost interest in one project and couldn’t wait to start another. So he completed very few paintings.Da Vinci took four years to paint the Mona Lisa.Unfortunately, the man who ordered the painting didn’t like it and refused to pay him. However, ten years later,da Vinci sold it to the King of France. The King hung it in the Louvre Palace in Paris.Today the Mona Lisa still hangs in the Louvre, which is now a museum.

Frederick Banting hated school.Having grown up on a farm near Alliston,Ontario,Fred was a good worker but felt uncomfortable and unaccepted in a town school. After graduation,he began studies to become a minister. When that did not go well,he changed his goal to medicine.World War Ⅰ arrived, and the great need for field medics(救护人员) resulted in the early graduation of Fred. After the war,the young Canadian doctor returned home to set up his practice.Just then he began to focus on articles on diabetes(糖尿病),a disease that had claimed the life of a neighbour’s child.
To solve the problem of this disease,Fred approached Dr.J.J.R.Macleod at the University of Toronto and eventually convinced Dr.Macleod to support him.In 1920,Fred happily entered a poorly equipped laboratory and was given a young assistant named Charles Best.Fred and Charles worked day and night, but early results in producing the hormone(激素) preparation they called insulin(胰岛素) were discouraging. Many of the animals they treated died. Finally one animal survived for several weeks. The team appeared to be finally getting somewhere, and it was time to move on to human subjects. Before treating human patients, however,Fred and Charles tested the safety of their insulin each other.Their tests were a triumph.
The first patient to be treated was a fourteen-year-old boy named Leonard. The year was 1921.The poor boy weighed only seventy-five pounds, and he was barely alive. But the new insulin treatment administered by Fred and Charles was a great success.Leonard gained weight, and his health dramatically improved.
In 1923,the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded jointly to Canadian doctors Frederick Banting and J.J.R.Macleod.Fred could have made himself a millionaire with his discovery.Instead,he sold his patent for the production of insulin to the University of Toronto—for one dollar—so that the drug could be marketed cheaply and thousands of lives could be saved and improved. Thanks to Fred, diabetics are able to live normal lives where before it was impossible.
Fred was just ordinary in many respects but he was a man with the strong will to get to his goal.He had the heart of a true Canadian hero.

Scientists near San Francisco work to identify a type of endangered fish using a tool that was originally made for treating cancer.
Currently,CRISPR is used to change the genetic material in specific cells.By changing the structure of immune cells,it helps recognize and fight cancer. The same technology is now used in a special machine called Sherlock, which,of course,is named after the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes. They do not, however, use Sherlock to change fish cells.Instead, the ocean researchers catch the fish, collect a small amount of mucus(黏液) and then test the cells to find the genetic makeup of the fish.It can be done in about 30 minutes. In the past, the researchers would have to wait weeks or months to get test results.
The researchers have found that the technology is extremely helpful when looking at different species of Chinook salmon, because they look nearly the same. However, some of them are endangered, and the scientists need to keep track of them.
In the past, the scientists would catch the Chinook salmon and measure them to tell them apart.“It’s not very accurate,” said Andrea Schreier,an associate professor at the University of California in Davis. Now she is working on the salmon.Schreier said when they catch the fish, the Sherlock machine can quickly tell them if they have one of the special salmon. It’s important because it allows the scientists to do things that will help the endangered salmon live longer. For example, they can catch them in lakes far away from the coast and take them by truck to the San Francisco Bay.In the past, the fish might have tried to make it to the Bay by swimming in rivers. However, due to climate change, the river water is sometimes too warm for the fish to make the trip safely.
Schreier said she feels good about the project because she likes being able to assist with conservation.“I really want to work to maintain our ecosystems and our native populations as much as possible, given all of the pressures that we humans place on them through our different activities.”

Edward O.Wilson’s Letters to a Young Scientist is part of a memoir(回忆录) and part of an advice column for young scientists.During his long and highly successful career,Wilson has advised numerous doctoral students and helped them launch their careers.Along the way,he has developed a strong sense of what it takes to be successful in the field of science. He builds his book around a more fundamental and timeless career question: What makes a good scientist
As Wilson works toward an answer,he backs up his arguments with first-hand evidence. It is obvious that he deeply appreciates the creativity of the scientific process. In his first few chapters,he encourages readers to daydream, work hard and mess around.Wilson relates several examples of “messing around” in his own career. Some led to major discoveries while others led to nothing at all. However, quick and uncontrolled experiments open the potential for major discoveries.
I find Wilson’s writings on the importance of failure especially affecting. Most young scientists are not prepared for the level and number of setbacks they are likely to come across in their early careers. As scientific funding has been cut and tenure-track(终身的) jobs have grown rare, today’s young scientists will be refused more than scientists of equal quality in the past century.“Be prepared mentally for some amount of failure.Waste and frustration often attend the earliest stages,” Wilson writes.
Wilson also suggests,“A strong work virtue is absolutely essential. There must be an ability to pass long hours in study and research with pleasure even though some of the effort will unavoidably lead to dead ends.” The time that is seemingly wasted may later prove to have been well spent.Wilson insists that the process of exploring and gaining closeness with one’s studies—even the ones that don’t go as planned—is essential to the creative process of a scientist.

Think back to the last time you shopped for fruits and vegetables. You may have noticed some items labelled with the word “organic”. 36
“Organic” refers to the way food is grown. To be labelled as organic, food production must meet strict guidelines. These can be different depending on where you live.In the United States, organic food must be grown or raised without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
37 That changed after the Industrial Revolution.During the 20th century, many ideas that were used by factories and big businesses were put into action on farms. This helped some farms grow larger and produce more.
The organic movement was started to get back to the old traditional ways of farming. Why Many believe the chemicals and pesticides used in modern farming can be harmful to your health. 38 And those who support the organic movement also point to its benefits for the environment.
Have you ever compared organic and non-organic foods at the grocery store If so,you know that organic food tends to cost more. This happens for many reasons.Organic farming produces fewer crops. 39 Additionally, organic farms spend more money taking care of the animals they raise. These and other factors drive the cost of organic food up.
Is organic food worth the extra cost Some people believe it is.They may think it tastes better or just prefer to eat food that has not been grown using chemicals. 40 They are still trying to find a major difference between organic and non-organic foods in terms of safety, nutrition,or taste.Still, others argue that the environmental benefits of organic food make it worth the price.
A.Have you ever wondered what that means
B.The cost of production is also usually higher.
C.For most of history, almost all food was organic.
D.Are you wondering if organic food is right for you
E.Many people are willing to pay more for organic food.

Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends,Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class.Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn’t looking.
Now,Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all,she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass(放大镜) abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence’s table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing This was definitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on,but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way.Of course,Agatha could have asked them what they were up to,and they might have told her—but she wouldn’t have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school,Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum.Agatha saw them go into the bookshop.Strange,again.Florence didn’t read much—no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school,Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn’t because they were busy.Even more mysterious...
When Agatha’s mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along, which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.

28.Which of the following best describes the technology
A.Immature. B.Efficient.
C.Inaccurate. D.Economical.
29.What do the new technology and the traditional way have in common
A.They originally aimed at detecting cancer.
B.They test the fish mucus to tell them apart.
C.They are carried out by researchers in the lab.
D.They help researchers tell different salmons apart.
30.What can be inferred about the Chinook salmons
A.They will soon die out.
B.They are of the same size.
C.They are used to cool water.
D.They are now well protected.
31.What do we know about Andrea Schreier from the text
A.She is rather devoted to the conservation.
B.She can now spend less time on her work.
C.She thinks her work needs improvement.
D.She thinks humans are greatly pressured.

32.What is Letters to a Young Scientist mainly about
A.Wilson’s achievements.
B.Records of Wilson’s private life.
C.Practical suggestions for scientists.
D.Methods for scientists’ finding desirable jobs.
33.Why does Wilson value creative scientific experiments
A.They make it possible to achieve great success.
B.They make it easy to get first-hand experience.
C.They can lead to final findings rapidly.
D.They can be controlled at will.
34.What’s the current situation of young scientists
A.They are more afraid of suffering failures.
B.They may face even greater challenges at work.
C.They are more knowledgeable and better educated.
D.They can take advantage of more scientific resources.
35.What’s Wilson’s advice for young scientists
A.To avoid academic dead ends. B.To develop critical thinking.
C.To stay positive patiently. D.To make a schedule.

F.Some also think organic food is naturally more nutritious.

注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Opening the door of the living room,Agatha heard voices shout from darkness,“SURPRISE!”
After eating the cake,Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents.
