Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents. Most students are always told by their parents to study harder and better so that they can have a wonderful life in the future. Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for many students who are not gifted (有天赋的) enough. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose hope. Such students feel that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don’t want to go to school any longer. They become dropouts.
It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers’ work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to those schools opening in the evenings and on weekends — they only help the students to pass the exams and never teach them any real sense of the world.
Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologists (心理学家) now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the students. Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong and how to show love and care for others, even for their parents.

A.Those who make troubles in and out of school.
B.Those who go about or stay at home instead of being at school.

D.That the teachers only help the students to pass the exams.
12.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A.The Trouble in Japanese Schools
B.The Problems of Japanese Students

D.The Pressures on Japanese Students
My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and with pandemic, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.
The next day, saying goodbye to my husband, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street corner with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.
After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. Seeing how moved she was by his music, at the end of our meal, I gave her a ten-dollar bill and asked her to walk across the street and put it in his bowl.
She was a little surprised. “Really ” she asked with bright eyes. I nodded. So she headed over and as she approached, the man was just finishing a song and started talking to her, and they ended up having a sweet conversation. She told him how touched she was by his music, and he ended up telling her that she made his day. As she was excitedly repeating the conversation back to me, she mentioned, “He didn’t even know how much it was. He was just thankful that someone was enjoying his music.”

Praising Your Toddler Properly
Nothing delights a young child more than praise from his parents. But there can be right and wrong ways of praising children. 17 There are some basic guidelines to help make your praises to your little one loud and clear.
●Make it genuine. Well-meaning parents can repeat a mechanical “Good job!” many times a day without even realizing it. Your child can tell whether you really mean it! 18 Look at your child in their eyes and smile at him to be sure he can see how pleased you are.
19 Be sure the praise is about the child’s behavior, and not a comment on his character. When you say “You are good/bad”, this is a reflection on your child’s character, and he may feel it can’t be changed. Instead, say “Your behavior is good/bad” and it becomes something the child can choose to change.
●Never make it critical. Be sure not to mix praise with criticism. For example, if your son dresses himself, and you say, “Good job dressing yourself, but those clothes really don’t match,” the praise is lost. 20 Just walk into school and proudly tell the teacher “Sammy dressed himself today. Didn’t he do a great job ” and give a wink (递眼色). Your son will be proud and the kids won’t even notice!
21 Aside from the outcome in changing behavior, there is simply no greater reward than watching your child’s face light up when you praise him!
A.Never over praise.
B.Never make it about his character.
C.Be sure your tone and voice communicate your delight.
D.It sends a message that the child did not do a good enough job.
E.Make it all about your child and not about your thoughts or feelings.
F.Using praise to influence your child’s behaviors can be both effective and rewarding.
G.Sometimes praise can actually do more harm than good.
Tips about adventurous camping
Adventurous camping such as camping wild is a wonderful way to experience the natural world and, at its best, it makes little environmental influence. But with increasing numbers of people wanting to escape into the wilderness, it is becoming a big deal to camp with much attention and leave no mark.
Wild adventurous camping is not permitted in many places, particularly in crowded lowland Britain. 22 Contact them to find out their policy on camping and shelter building. For example, it is fine to camp wild in remote parts of Scotland, but in England you must ask the landowner’s permission, except in national parks.
Adventurous camping is about having relaxation, sleeping outdoors without modern conveniences and experiencing bad weather. 23 Consequently, seek out smaller, more remote places with easy access to open spaces and perhaps beaches. Better still, find a campsite with no road access: walking in makes a real adventure.
24 Choose a campsite with privacy and minimum influence on others and the environment. Try to use an area where people have obviously camped before rather than creating a new spot. When camping in woodland, avoid standing dead trees, which may fall on a windy night. Avoid animal runs and caves, and possible homes of biting insects. Make sure you have most protection on the windward side. If you make a fire, do so downwind of your shelter.
In the final analysis, when it comes to adventurous wild camping, always consider what influence you might have on the natural world. Avoid damaging plants. A good campsite is found, not made. 25
A.Considering all the benefits, it makes sense to make a slight change.
B.A busy, fully-equipped campsite seems to go against this.
C.Changing it is supposed to be unnecessary.
D.Wherever you are, find out about organizations responsible for managing wild spaces.
E.In some cases, modern facilities can be a great help to those in need.
F.Finding the right spot to camp is the first step to guaranteeing a good night’s sleep.

Be understanding. 29 Be friendly. 30 To be a volunteer, you might meet new people who want to make friends with. You might just meet someone who becomes a friend for the rest of your life.
A.Treat others like friends, and they’ll do the same for you.
B.begin to do it at once.
C.Try to understand what other people are facing.
D.Here’s some advice on how to do the volunteering jobs well.
E.Don’t try to do everything by yourself.
Susan Luo, an adviser for teenagers, has received a letter asking for some advice. Read her reply and discuss the questions.
Date

Greeting
Dear Worried Friend,
You wrote that you are very worried about your friend, Chen Lei. I understand quite well that you are anxious and feel terrible. You think that your friend plays computer games too often and spends too much time online.
Body
I recommend that you talk to your friend about his behaviour. It is not unusual for teenagers of your generation to be attracted to computer games and the online world. But spending too much time online is unhealthy and makes it very difficult to focus on other things in life. Some students even become addicted to the Internet and cannot concentrate on school and family life. I think you should encourage your friend to try new hobbies. Why not discuss the problem together I am sure he will listen to you, since you are his good friend.

All the best,

Five Things Nobody Told Me about College
As I type this, I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of insider look on what college would be like. However, there’s only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5 things nobody told me about college: 36
Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to pursue within the first quarter of attendance. During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside (UCR), I thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that’s what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area. 37
In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take full advantage of the conferences, research, internships (实习), and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor’s office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask. 38
College is where you meet your bridesmaids, groomsmen, neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about the people who you invest yourself in. You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient to the people who are the complete opposite of that description. 39
As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor (校长), asking him for support towards my initiatives (提议), met with the Vice Chancellors, and cooperated with my teaching assistants to begin my undergraduate research protect. Nothing good will happen when you are silent. 40
At my high school, there were about only four active club and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR’s campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all of your tuition (学费) to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Create stories that you will want to tell your grandchildren one day. It all begins here, by signing up to join an organization.
