Letting Her Take the Wheel
My daughter,Mia,is 16 and learning to drive. Many parents are freaked out(惊慌失措) about putting their easily distracted teenagers in charge of a fast-moving thing of glass and steel. My wife refused to teach her, leaving the task to me.
I’ve learned a few things.First,Mia didn’t know how to drive at all.She didn’t even know where to put the key.It was like watching a chimpanzee try to solve a puzzle.Worse, she couldn’t remember that D was for drive, and R meant reverse(倒车).
Then came the road rules.Mia likes to sail past stop signs.I had to explain that “STOP means STOP”.Had she actually read the rule book “Yes,” she said, but she forgot most of it.“It was so boring.”
Although I had been driving her around for her whole life, she hadn’t learned anything.
Despite these things,I’ve also learned that I enjoy teaching her.I think I’m pretty good at it.I am much calmer than I thought I would be.
I also enjoy the one-on-one time we have together. We have some good conversations. So far,we have covered her friends’ hairstyles and how stressed she feels after school.I enjoyed communicating with her.
One Sunday evening,we were driving down a narrow back street, deep in conversation, when I realized that the car was moving quite fast.“SLOW DOWN!” I yelled, yanking(猛拉) the hand brake(手刹).We stopped the car and sat in the dark for a minute.“You can’t go that fast,” I said.“You don’t know enough yet.” I put my hand on her head,“I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
“Me neither,” she said.
“Okay,cool,” I said.“Let’s go.”

C
One of the biggest concerns in science is bias(偏见)—that scientists themselves, consciously or subconsciously may put their thumbs on the scales and influence the outcomes of experiments.Boffins have come up with all sorts of strategies to try to remove it,from having their colleagues repeat their work to the “double blinding” common in clinical trials, when even the experimenters do not know which patients are receiving an experimental drug and which are getting a sugar-pill placebo(安慰剂).
But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results. The point was demonstrated by two recent papers published in a journal called Surgery.Despite being based on the same data, they drew opposite conclusions about whether using a particular piece of kit(工具包) during surgery reduced or increased the chances of infection.
A new paper, from a large team of researchers headed by Martin Schweinsberg,a psychologist at a European School in Berlin, helps shed some light on why.Dr Schweinsberg asked analysts to explore two seemingly straightforward theories. The first was that a woman’s tendency to participate would rise as the number of other women in a conversation increased. The second was that high-status participants would talk more than the low-status participants.
As it turned out,no two analysts employed exactly the same methods, and none got the same results. Some 29% of analysts reported that high-status participants were more likely to contribute. But 21% reported the opposite.Things were less finely balanced with the first theory, with 64% reporting that women do indeed participate more,if plenty of other women are present. But 21% concluded that the opposite was true.
The problem was not that any of the analyses were “wrong” in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques. When it came to defining how much women spoke, for instance, some analysts chose the number of words in each woman’s comment.Still others defined it by the number of conversations that a woman participated in,regardless of how much she actually said.
28.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the first paragraph
A.Experiment. B.Scale. C.Thumb. D.Bias.
29.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2
A.The process of gathering the data can go wrong.
B.Different methods of data analysis lead to different results.
C.The way of assessing the experiment influences the results.

A.Choice of definitions.
B.Choice of subjects.
C.Understanding of conversations.
D.Understanding of theories.

After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995.Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park.By 2007,the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170.
Gray wolves once roamed throughout the Yellowstone area. But they were gradually displaced by human development and hunted by farmers for killing livestock(牲畜).By the 1920s,wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They moved farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there was less contact with humans.
The disappearance of the wolves had many consequences.Deer populations—a major food source for the wolf—grew rapidly without their usual enemy. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation, which reduced plant diversity in the park.In the absence of wolves, coyote(小野狼) populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes.
As early as 1966,biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone, hoping that they would be able to control the deer and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan, worrying that wolves would kill their livestock or pets.Other people feared that the wolves would not be well-protected in Yellowstone.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. They included many compromises to help people accept the wolves’ presence. For example, they promised to pay farmers for livestock killed by wolves.
The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolves in Yellowstone.Certain wolves wear special collars to help biologists gather information about how the wolves live, hunt, and reproduce. Each year the wolf population is counted.
Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone.Deer and coyote populations are down, while red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Why gray wolves became a danger to farmers.
B.What gray wolves preferred about living in Canada.
C.How gray wolves were forced out of their original homes.
D.When gray wolves were gradually reintroduced to Yellowstone.
33.How is paragraph 3 developed
A.By making comparisons.
B.By explaining cause and effect.

34.Why did biologists suggest the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone
A.To reduce the park’s plant diversity.
B.To protect the wolves from dying out.
C.To control the local livestock problem.
D.To limit the deer and coyote populations.
35.Which statement best summarizes the writer’s viewpoint
A.Wolves are an important part of American national parks.
B.Yellowstone’s wolf reintroduction program was a mistake.
C.The government should be responsible for reintroducing wolves.
D.Yellowstone’s wolf program has benefited the wolves and the park.

Some people seem to believe quitting means a lack of strength. And the willingness to suffer through anything with the aim of reaching a goal is a real symbol of honor. 36 Sometimes,it takes more courage to walk away from a goal than it does to power through no matter what. Here are three times when quitting is a sign of mental strength.
The reward isn’t worth the effort. You may have imagined that losing 10 pounds or getting a 10% raise would somehow make your life 100% better. However,as you work toward a goal, you might realize that success isn’t going to deliver the giant reward you’d dreamed of. 37
Your goals have changed.Keeping in shape might seem like a good goal on January 1st.But,by March, you might set your sights on getting a new job. 38 It’s OK to change your goals. In fact, establishing new goals could be the key to helping you grow and learn.
39 Paying off your debt might sound like an honorable goal. But working three jobs to pay your bills might mean fewer opportunities to get things that matter to you.So you don’t need to give up your values to prove you can reach a goal. It’s OK to walk away from something that requires you to stop doing the things you believe in most.
Remember that you don’t have to prove yourself to anyone. 40 That’s OK.Just remind yourself that giving something up allows you to gain something else, like more time or better mental health.
A.However,it is not an easy thing to quit.
B.But quitting doesn’t mean you are a loser.
C.People may question your decision to quit.
D.The process doesn’t agree with your values.
E.It’s hard to walk away from something that you’ve worked hard on.
F.You,therefore, needn’t devote the time and effort it’d take to get there.
G.And then your exercise program may no longer be a top choice for you.

Joseph was my best friend. He was the only son of Adam Tan,a well-known former athlete and a member of the first Malaysia team to reach the South Pole in an exploration.Hence, many assumed Joseph to be as sporting as his father. However, since he was young,he has been a sickly boy.He suffered from a severe breathing problem and preferred to read books indoors.
A year ago,his father was stuck by a wild bull(公牛) on the last mile of his exploration in the Mautu wilderness in Africa and later died.On the anniversary(周年纪念日) of his father’s death,he was hurt by the unkind remarks from Bala and Azhar, his classmates. They had called him “a sickly boy”,remarking that he was a disgrace(丢脸的人) to his father. From that day on,Joseph devoted himself to building up his body and turned his attention and efforts enthusiastically to sports.“No one will compare me unfavorably to my father,” he thought.
Joseph joined our school exploration team and then became its leader. We were all excited when we learned that the school had planned an exploration in Kalimantan,Indonesia. It was also meant to be in memory of Joseph’s father, who was its former adviser.
The exploration really tested our courage and skills.Though we had the help of our two teacher advisers,we were determined to succeed in the exploration which was to cross a mountain, river and forest. The last stage was the forest and we were within sight of our target. We had only one more kilometer to cover before we would emerge from the forest and successfully complete our exploration in the required time.If we succeeded,we would be the first school team to have done that in record time.
However,Shafig,Joseph’s teammate,noticed his breathing problem.
People cheered but stopped when they saw us carrying Joseph.

根据Disneyland Paris—Paris,France部分第二段“Tickets:£ 34 per adult and £ 27 per child.Children under the age of 3 get in for free.”
根据第一段首句“My daughter,Mia,is 16 and learning to drive.”
故选A项。]
I yelled, yanking (猛拉) the hand brake (手刹).We stopped the car and sat in the dark for a minute.‘You can’t go that fast,’ I said.‘You don’t know enough yet.’ I put my hand on her head,‘I don’t want anything to happen to you.’”
根据上文“One of the biggest concerns in science is bias(偏见)—that scientists themselves, consciously or subconsciously may put their thumbs on the scales and influence the outcomes of experiments.”
第二段第一、二句阐明观点“But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results.”,后文进行了详细的展开描述,从而论证这一观点,因此第二段主要讨论了不同的数据分析方法会导致不同的结果,故选B。]
根据最后一段第一、二句“The problem was not that any of the analyses were‘wrong’in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques.” 同时呼应上文中的“The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results.”。故选A。]
根据第四段中“As early as 1966,biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone, hoping that they would be able to control the deer and coyote problems.”
根据第一段中“By 2007,the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170.” 根据最后一段中“Deer and coyote populations are down, while red foxes have made a comeback.”
36.A [文章首句提到一些人认为放弃意味着缺乏力量,而根据空后“Sometimes,it takes more courage to walk away from a goal than it does to power through no matter what.” 故选A。]
37.F [根据上句“However,as you work toward a goal, you might realize that success isn’t going to deliver the giant reward you’d dreamed of.”

Dear Tom,
How are you doing I did have a great time in Chimelong Paradise on the National Day Holiday. The place is amazing! Located in the south of Guangzhou,Chimelong Paradise is a famous theme park with varieties of exciting rides, from enormous roller coasters to scary free-fall drops.
What impressed me most was to play the pirate ship, which was beautifully decorated hanging in the air.The minute it began swinging at a high speed,I started to grip the safety belt with hands sweating. So thrilling was the swinging ship that I kept screaming and yelling all the time, but I really enjoyed it when the ship moved back and forth.
Chimelong Paradise is just a perfect place for thrill-seekers,so I do hope you can come and have fun with me.
Yours,
Li Hua
However,Shafig,Joseph’s teammate, noticed his breathing problem. His face was pale and Shafig signaled us to stop walking. We gathered around Joseph anxiously and forced him to stop and rest. Then we noticed something bad.His hands were shaking. This was serious trouble indeed. When we asked him about his medicine,Joseph said that he had lost his pills somewhere during the hiking.Behind us was 20 kilometers of wilderness which we had covered. We had left our teachers two kilometers behind us.We had to stop here and try our best to contact the nearest hospital.Joseph begged us to carry on because he wanted to prove himself to his father.Hearing what he said,we made up our minds to carry him to finish this last stage.
People cheered but stopped when they saw us carrying Joseph.Carrying Joseph was a very heavy load but we did not mind the physical burden. What worried us was not finishing the hiking in record time but that Joseph would die before he received medical help.We did not know how we made it and walked through the jungle into the finishing line. Our teachers who timed us told we had taken half an hour.Joseph was then sent to hospital. In my heart, his father should be proud of him.
