Jessica Damiano moved into a new home in the spring of 2005.At the time, she was delighted to see a flowering plant growing in the garden. She did not know the name of the beautiful plant. But that did not matter to her.She loved it!
Two years later,Damiano graduated from Cornell University’s master gardener program. She worked as a gardening writer for a local newspaper. That was when she found out the truth. She discovered that her favorite plant was called purple loosestrife and that it was considered “invasive(入侵的)” in her home state of New York. However, she told herself that the plant was not spreading on the property and that it was not out of control.
Then she learned more. Some plants known to be invasive are what Damiano calls “wolves in sheep’s clothing”.This means they may seem harmless and well-contained in the garden but become harmful in other places.
Birds eat the seeds of invasive plants and spread them to other places. Those seeds grow into new plants that outgrow native plants. This is because invasive plants often are not eaten by local wildlife, which would otherwise keep them under control. If not controlled, invasive plants grow larger and push out native plants that provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and small animals. This harms the local environment.
Many state environmental agencies ban the sale and use of plants found to be harmful to human or ecological health. But some invasive plants are not officially considered invasive.Others may be listed as invasive in one area but not another. And some invasive plants continue to be sold in stores.
So,what is a gardener to do?Damiano says to avoid any plants sold as “vigorous”“fast-spreading” “quick-climbing” or a “rapid self-sower”.She warns that these are all sellers’ code words(暗号) for invasive plants.Next, learn about your local area:Which plants are invasive? And which plants are native?Ask government agencies, universities and colleges, and environmental groups. You can also do your own research at libraries or online.
In the end,Damiano replaced that plant with the native and equally beautiful blazing star plant. This plant has been growing happily without problems in her garden for the past 15 years.
24.How did Damiano react when she first learned purple loosestrife was “invasive”?
A.She felt regretful for loving it.
B.She reported it to the government.
C.She didn’t take the fact seriously.
D.She got rid of the plant immediately.
25.Why can invasive plants grow better than native plants
A.They need less water.
B.They have fewer natural enemies.
C.They adapt to the environment quicker.
D.They have longer roots and bigger leaves.
26.What does the author mainly intend to express in paragraph 5
A.Policies about invasive plants vary in different areas.
B.Some invasive plants are not harmful.
C.Invasive plants are rarely seen in stores.
D.The government’s attitude to invasive plants is improper.
27.Which is a method the gardener can use to avoid planting invasive plants
A.Giving up any plants that sell well in the local area.
B.Choosing plants that can provide food for wild animals.
C.Refusing to say the code words of sellers for invasive plants.
D.Referring to books for information on which plants are invasive.

When it comes to cancer, red meat is often thought to be the bad guy.But new research from the University of Chicago has shown that a nutrient found in red meat may support our body’s ability to fight off cancer cells.
The nutrient in question is called TVA,which is a long-chain fatty acid(酸) that our bodies cannot make by themselves.“TVA in humans is mainly from foods, including beef and lamb,” said study author Jing Chen,a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. In the new study,Chen’s team collected 255 bioactive substances from nutrients into a database and tested whether any of the substances could affect the immune(免疫的) system’s ability to fight cancer cells.Specifically, the team focused on their ability to activate a class of white blood cells called CD8+ T cells, also known as killer T cells, finding and destroying infected cells and,in this case, cancers.
After evaluating the top six substances in both human and mouse cells, the team found that TVA produced the best results.“TVA strengthens CD8+ T cells’ function and thus promotes T cell-based immune system response to battle cancerous growth,” Chen said. The team found that mice with a diet enriched with TVA saw significantly reduced cancerous growth.“Focusing on bioactivity of nutrients rather than individual food might be more important, and taking supplements(保健品) with enriched bioactive nutrients is likely more efficient than consuming foods containing these nutrients,” Chen said.
Chen thinks there may be other nutrients that can do the same.“There is early data showing that other fatty acids from plants signal through a similar receptor as TVA,so we believe there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing,” he said.
28.What might be the general opinion about red meat
A.It helps fight cancer. B.It brings health risks.
C.It is rich in fatty acids. D.It contains no nutrients.
29.How does TVA support the immune system
A.By producing nutrients. B.By killing infected cells.
C.By collecting substances. D.By activating killer T cells.
30.What does Chen most probably suggest readers do
A.Go vegetarian. B.Eat less red meat.
C.Prevent cancer actively. D.Take a TVA-enriched diet.
31.In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear
A.Science. B.Education. C.Sports. D.Entertainment.

Laughter comes in many forms, from a polite and quiet laugh to a great hearty laugh.Scientists are now developing an AI system to recreate different laughs in proper social contexts. The team behind the laughing robot Erica said that the system could improve natural conversations between people and an AI robot.“We think that one of the important functions of conversational AI is empathy(共情),” said Dr Koji Inoue, the lead author of the research.“So we decided that one way a robot can empathize with its users is to share their laughter.”
The team have set out to teach their AI system the art of conversational laughter. They gathered training data from more than 80 daily dialogues between male subjects and the robot that was initially operated by four actresses remotely. The dialogue data was grouped into social laughs (where humour isn’t involved, such as in polite or embarrassed laughter) and laughter of joy.Based on the audio files, the algorithm(算法) learned the basic characteristics of social laughs, which tend to be softer, and merry laughs, with the aim of mirroring these in appropriate situations.
“Our biggest obstructor in the work was identifying the actual cases of shared laughter because as you know, most laughter is actually not shared at all,” said Inoue.“We had to carefully decide exactly which laughs we could use for our analysis and we couldn’t just assume that any laugh can be responded to.It was really not easy work.” The team said laughter could help create robots with their own distinct character although it could take more than 20 years before it would be possible to have a casual chat with a robot like we would with a friend.
“One of the things we’d keep in mind is that a laughing robot or algorithm will never be able to understand you or the meaning of laughter,” points out Prof.Sandra Wachter of the Oxford Internet Institute.“But with their development, they might get very good at tricking you into believing they understand what’s going on.”
32.Why did Inoue’s team develop the AI system
A.To better understand human empathy.
B.To promote the social skills of robots.
C.To explore the differences between laughs.
D.To assist robots in identifying people’s moods.
33.What can robot Erica probably do at present
A.Repeat the details of the 80 dialogues.
B.Distinguish people by hearing their laughs.
C.Recreate a scene played by the four actresses.
D.Master the features of laughs provided by data.
34.What does the underlined word “obstructor” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Potential. B.Barrier. C.Alternative. D.Mistake.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Are AI Systems Going Beyond Human Ability
B.Can Conversational AI Really Understand Us
C.Laughing Robots Are Round the Corner
D.Robots Become Laughing Masters
