China’s new word, “Tuhao”, may be in next year’s Oxford(牛津)English Dictionary. The word caught the eyes of the dictionary’s editors(编者) because of a program about Chinese words in BBC.
In Chinese, “tu” means uncouth(粗野) and “hao” means rich. It traditionally means rich people who live in the villages of China. These years, people on the internet use this word to talk about those who have much money but little taste. The word became more popular in September with Apple’s new gold-colored iPhone. This kind of phone is loved by some Chinese because of the color “tuhao gold.”
“We have about 120 Chinese words now in Oxford English Dictionary,” said Julie Kleeman, one of the editors of Oxford English Dictionary. Two famous ones are “Guanxi” and “Taikonaut” “Guanxi” means “relationship”. “Taikonaut” is a mix of “taikong” and astronaut. It means Chinese astronaut.
Another word, “Dim Sum”, comes from Cantonese dialect(粤语) and it is a Chinese dish with different kinds of styles, like dumplings, cakes and many other steamed(蒸) and fried food.
“To keep the real meaning of these Chinese words, people don’t want to use an English word to take the place of Chinese pinyin.” Kleeman added.
