Gap Year Sailing Programmes
A gap yearspent sailing will show you more of the world than most people see in their whole lives. So hoist the anchor, throw off the bowlines, catch the following wind, and set sail on a voyage of discovery to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Where to Go
The beauty of a sailing gap year is that you don't just visit a single place. These unique
adventures can take you across oceans and whole regions to experience dozens of countries in a single gap year. Some programmes combine several regions while others stick to just one.
Costs
How much a sailing gap year costs varies greatly depending on the type of programme and the length of the voyage.A programme lasting a few weeks may cost $5,000 or
more.Months long adventures may be as much as $20,000,especially if they involve college credit orother course-work.
Visa
Visa requirements will vary depending on where your voyage takes you.Your
programme will inform you of which visas you'll need.Make sure you obtain your visas well in advance
Housing
Housing will consist of a berth(铺位)aboard your boat.Don't expect anything
fancy. You'll likely have little more than a bunk and a small storage locker in a two-or
three-person cabin.Given the limited size of your living space, expect to be in close quarters with your crewmates at all times with little real privacy.
Health &Safety
Living aboard a ship means that you can't always count on having medical facilities
nearby. You may be asked to provide a note from your doctor certifying that you are in good health before being accepted into your programme. Most programmes include medical
emergency insurance as part of their fees.See what it covers and what it doesn't when making your decision
21.What do the sailing programmes provide participants

B.Many chances to travel around the world by sea.
C.Sea trips to foreign countries for as long as a year.
D.Academic courses of famous universities on the sea.
22.What will you have to do before entering the programme
A.Obtain your proper visa.
B.Save as much as 20,000. C.Find a perfect doctor.
D.Take a medical examination.
23.What is housing like in the programme
A.You will share a bed with two other people.
B.You will be kept in different rooms on the voyage. C.You will have a comfortable bed and fresh air.
D.Your living space will be quite limited during the voyage.

How do you think I got so passionate about all of this! When I was finishing up with high school,I truly did not feel ready to start at university.I wanted to take some time out before starting but did not want to sit doing nothing!
My mum had heard through a business colleague about a US high school exchange
programme—his daughter expected to end up in New York,Chicago,LA.She ended up on a farm in Kentucky and loved every single minute ofit!I applied.I remember going for an
interview at a very fashionable hotel in Edinburgh. And suddenly I was going.
I was PAINFULLY shy when I was younger.I couldn't speak with anyone unless they
started conversation, and even then it had to be dragged out of me,so being thrown into a
completely new environment was a wake-up call.I was living with a host family with three
young children and a grandmother.I was put into a new family setting that I was clueless with.
I started at a local high school that started at 8:30 am,a ridiculous starting time in my mind, especially in the winter when I could hear owls hooting whilst waiting for the bus!I was the shiny new girl with the strange accent and so everyone wanted to talk to me,ask me questions about my home country and share their lives with me.It was all so overwhelming but I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!
It changed me fundamentally and the best example of this I can give is the travelling to the programme and at the end of the programme. On the flight back,I was more than willing to talk with the people sitting next to me.I felt it much easier for me to talk with complete
strangers on the return trip. How amazing it is!What a painfully shy girl I used to be!Coming back to the UK,I was starting conversation with people.I was desperate to tell anyone who
would listen about the most amazing experience of my life in the US!

A good hug gives us a comfortable feeling, leaving us calm and at ease.Like the rest of us,scientists havelong suspected the healing capacity(修复能力)of a good hug.Unlike the rest of us,they've gone about trying to prove it.
“There's a lot that we still need to learn, and there's a lot we don't know,”says Michael Murphy,a research professor in the department of psychological sciences at Texas Tech
University.“What seems to be emerging is that hugs,as well as other forms of affectionate
touch, are really powerful ways of reminding people that they're cared about and that they have someone in their corner.”
“We expect touch. When we're born,we're placed in our mother's arms almost immediately. In that first year of our life,we spend a lot of time being held by other
people. And as we grow up,we seek out hugs and touch and cuddling as a way of connection.I think what has been lost in the past years are these really easy opportunities to be reminded of connection.”
While he was at Carnegie Mellon,Murphy was the lead author of a hug-centered 2018 article in the scientific journal PLOSOne.In a series of interviews with 404 adults over a
two-week period, the researchers found, that“receiving a hug is associated with the
attenuation of negative mood that occurs on days with interpersonal conflict".That is to
say, generally, hugs help to reduce the negative impacts that personal conflicts may cause in our daily lives.
Other papers have found similarly that hugs aren't just reserved for simple social
greetings.Hugs and other forms of physical touch can really changea person's moods.A 2006 brain-wave study in which 16 married women were threatened with an electrical shock
showed that simply holding hands with their husbands helped calm the brain's reactions to the possible threat.Further, holding hands with their husbands in what was considered a
higher-quality marriage lessened the brain's threat response even more.

Most students, when asked about their ideal graduation gift, would probably reply,“A car” ,or“Money for a deposit on a house”.Cai Kaiyuan,21,made a different choice. As a graduation gift to himself,he decided to work as a volunteer teacher in a remote village in Xizang.
Cai,a senior majoring in electrical engineering at Hunan Railway Professional
Technology College, originally planned to cycle from Sichuan to Xizang.During his
journey,Cai's idea for a different graduation gift to himself began to take shape.“I did not
know beforehand what the journey would mean to me.I just want to gain a unique experience and have pleasure in appreciating the view there,"he said.
It turned out cycling on a plateau was extremely challenging. And it has kept changing his outlook on life.Cai's fingers even became frostbitten while cycling up a 5008-metre-high mountain, where temperatures often dropped to 18 below zero.At night, the ice covered the
road and he fell off his bike three times. The lack of oxygen made him feel dizzy and weak. “At the most serious moment,I felt that my life was on the line,”said Cai.
However,he also gained something unexpected. At Ya'an,a city in Sichuan,he met a group of tourists who are also university students.A girl called Wu Ling told him that she planned to work as a teacher in a primary school in Xizang after her journey. He was
impressed by the idea as she looked slender and weak.
It was not until he reached a family-run hotel in Shigatse that Cai's spirits began to
rise. The hotel manager's two daughters enjoyed talking with him.The kids asked about his experiences on his trip, and showed him the beautiful local lakes.“They told me that they
always liked to talk to guests,as they wanted to improve their Mandarin,”he said.“Their parents and many locals can only speak Tibetan.”
Cai was touched by the girls'story.Their situation is tough and the local people have little chance to learn Mandarin because the schools are short of teachers."I want to do
something to improve the situation for kids like them,”said Cai.His parents finally gave their agreement and his teachers also supported him.

How to Fight Laziness
Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind
36 Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too
early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home.Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things.By adjusting
your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some
people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task.Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 37
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑)that surround them.A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 38 Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you
enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home.Couples and children may all have
different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 39 Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal.Others at home may finally follow your example and perform their own tasks. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by
motivated people.
40 Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A.To fight family laziness, set an example
B.Knowing how to fight laziness is important
C.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep
D.Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child
E.Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be
brave It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed.A boy with
the name Henry gave us a good example.Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same
class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry
were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner.Ronny said excitedly,“Some people are fighting!Let's go and have a look!”But Henry refused,“It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are
expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,”said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys.Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behaviour, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not
deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored the other boys'laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as
well. However,Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead,he had his
new friends who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny.
At that moment,Henry happened to pass by.

(Text 10)
M:Good afternoon, everyone.I'm Mr John Francis,a representative from the Red Cross.I'm
going to talk to you about the work of the organisation and some basic aspects of First Aid. Well, the Red Cross Movement was started by a businessman called Jean Henri Dunant. His interest in the innocent people caught up in war began in 1859 when he witnessed the effects of a very fierce battle in Italy. At the time,he organised all the villagers to help the wounded soldiers and make sure they had food and basic medical attention. In 1864,the same
gentleman, together with four Swiss colleagues from his hometown, organised a conference
which laid the foundations for the now famous organisation. In order to always be
recognised, the Red Cross workers created their own symbol. They chose a red cross on a
whitebackground. It is protected by the law.Sometimes we find that the red cross has been used as a decorative symbol or to represent first aid stations but this is actually wrong
because using the red cross for anything other than the international organisation is actually against the law.Even though we often associate a red cross with hospitals and medical
treatment,in Australia,as in many countries, the recognised symbol for first aid and medical
centres,in fact,is a white cross on a green background. 1~5 BCBCA 6~10BCCAB

写作 第一节
My Hero
Each person has his or her own hero.My hero is Liang Jianying.Born in 1972,she is the general designer of the China high-speed EMU.She graduated from university in 1995.Ever since, she has been devoting all her time and energy to the development of the Chinese
high-speed railway.Afterwards, she led her team and invented the 300-350 km/h high-speed EMU,making it more convenient for us to travel around quickly.
Liang Jianying has set a good example for us.From her,I realise that we should keep on trying until we realise our dreams.
第二节
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after
school,Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily.Suddenly,he was stuck in the mud and couldn't get out.He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
At that moment,Henry happened to pass by.He heard the screams and ran to the river as
soon as possible.Seeing Ronny was almost drowned,Henry took off his clothes immediately and made them into a strong rope.He reached Ronny with the rope just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself,he brought Ronny to the shore in time.Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.
