Baggy has become the first dog in the UK—and probably the world—to join the fight against air pollution by recording the pollution levels (水平) near the ground.
Baggy wears a pollution monitor (监视器) around her neck. It is different from the normal pollution monitors fixed on lampposts (路灯柱) at about 3 meters high, so she can record pollution levels close to the ground.
This idea comes from Baggy’s 13-year-old owner Tom Hunt and his dad Matt Hunt. Since Baggy stands at about the same height as a child in a pushchair (婴儿车), her monitor shows a different result. The pollution levels are much higher than those recorded by the Environment Agency at higher places in the air. Tom has reported the shocking findings to the government in order to warn that babies are at higher risk of having asthma (哮喘).
Matt Hunt said he was very proud of his son because when the boy gets an idea, he keeps his head down and gets on with it until he finally makes it. And he really wants to do something good and stop young kids from getting asthma.
“Tom was interested in environmental protection as well as gadgets (小装置) making at a very early age”, Matt added. “About one year ago, he got the new technology. One Sunday afternoon, we went out to do some monitoring, and he said, ‘why don’t we put it around Baggy’s neck and let her monitor the pollution ’ So we did it.”
Tom said, “Most of the time, Baggy is just like any other dog. But for the rest of the time, she is a super dog, and we all really take pride in her.”

A.lower air pollution B.record pollution levels

The earth is about 4,600 million years old. Modern man has lived on the earth for only 35,000 years, but during that time, we have changed our planet in many ways. Many of the things that we have done are good, but more are not good for the earth.
Water pollution
A lot of people, birds and fish die each day because of water pollution. Factories have polluted the land and the water. As a result, many rivers and lakes are now dead.
Air pollution
In big cities, factories, as well as cars, trucks and buses are the main cause of air pollution. Many people in cities now have serious health problem. For example, Mexico city used to be a beautiful sunny capital, but today it is always covered by thick brown clouds.
Soil pollution
In order to have a good harvest, most of the farmers use chemicals too much in their fields. That’s bad for the soil. But this kind of pollution is difficult to stop.
These problems are very serious for our future, so all of us should do something to improve our environment. There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth. Choose ideas from the list or come up with a few of your own.
★Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you bring there—keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin.
★Turn off the lights and TV sets when you leave the room. This can save a lot of electricity.
★Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.
★Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.
★Use both sides of paper.
★Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or lakes nearby.
★Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth.
You don’t have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make every day Earth Day. If everyone makes a contribution to protecting the environment, the world will become much more beautiful.

A 回答问题
I’m Henry. Four weeks ago, I went to Antarctica with nineteen other students. I decided to take the trip after seeing a program about how Antarctica was affected(影响)by climate change(气候变化). I thought it’d be a great way to see its effects on Antarctica directly.
I was surprised by how little life there was in Antarctica. Documentaries show lands covered in penguins(企鹅)and seas full of whales, but of course, the film-makers stay there for months to film so many. I saw some, but not in the numbers I’d expected.
In our first group meeting, we all shared why we’d taken the trip. There were twenty students in total and twenty different explanations. Even though we were all a bit shy, we made friends with each other from day one. You often get a few people in a group who like telling the others what to do. Luckily, this wasn’t the case with us. To share messages, we set up an online group. It was nice, as we became pretty close.
I’ve become much more serious about helping the environment after learning more about the effects brought by climate change in Antarctica. I can also understand why people do things that harm the environment, as I’ve done them all myself. It’s not about blaming(责备)anyone but about changing people’s habits. We should try to live a low-carbon life(低碳生活).

七、读写综合
回答问题
