Anyone
who cares about what schools and colleges teach and how their students learn
will be interested in the memoir (回忆录) of Ralph W. Tyler,
who is one of the most famous men in American education.
Born
in Chicago in 1902, brought up and schooled in Nebraska, the 19-year-old
college graduate Ralph Tyler became hooked on teaching while teaching as
a science teacher in South Dakota and changed his major from medicine to
education.
Graduate
work at the University of Chicago found him connected with honorable educators
Charles Judd and W. W. Charters, whose ideas of teaching and testing had an
effect on his later work. In 1927, he became a teacher of Ohio State University
where he further developed a new method of testing.
Tyler
became well-known nationally in 1938, when he carried his work with the
Eight-Year Study from Ohio State University to the University of Chicago at the
invitation of Robert Hutchins.
Tyler
was the first director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral
Sciences at Stanford, a position he held for fourteen years. There, he firmly
believed that researchers should be free to seek an independent spirit in their
work.
Although
Tyler officially retired (退休) in 1967, he never
actually retired. He served on a long list of educational organizations in the

A
scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some
four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some
children reach eagerly for the candy they see. Some last a few minutes before
they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By
the time the children reach high school, something amazing has happened. A
survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold
out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous,
confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily upset.
Actually,
the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn't
show up on an IQ test.
The
hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists'
concerns. But brain theory can't explain what we wonder about most, like the
question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that
would defeat a less resistant (有抵抗力的) person.
Here
comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of EmotionalIntelligence: when
it comes to predicting people's success, brain ability
measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought
of as "character".
EQ
is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is
how they work together, and how one's ability handles stress, for instance,
affecting the ability to concentrate and putting intelligence to use. Among the
ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally
agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social
class to luck.
While
many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues
finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
45.Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the passage
A.To make the readers amused.
B.To prove the scientist's wisdom.
C.To introduce the topic of the text.
D.To show us how to do an IQ test.
46.The experiment with the four-year-olds shows us that ____.
A.the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment
B.the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success
C.emotional intelligence won't show up until Teen years.
D.candy can be used to measure a person's emotional intelligence
47.The underlined word "upbeat" in Paragraph 4 probably means ____.
A.positive B.negative C.impatient D.friendly
48.From the passage we learn that ____.
A.EQ does not have any connection with IQ
B.the higher a person's IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is
C.brain theory is able to explain what we wonder about most
D.scientists haven't discovered the way EQ and IQ work together

根据第一段中的“Anyone who cares about what schools and colleges teach and how their students learn”任何关心学校和大学教什么和学生如何学习的人......
根据第二段中的“while teaching as a science teacher in South Dakota and changed his major from medicine to education”可知,既然能弃医从教,说明对教育很痴迷。be hooked on意为“着迷于……的”。故选A。
根据倒数第二段中的“Tyler was the first director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, a position he held for fourteen years. ”泰勒是斯坦福大学行为科学高级研究中心(Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences)的首位主任,他担任该职位长达14年。故选B。
A
scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some
four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some
children reach eagerly for the candy they see.
Among the
ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally
agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social
class to luck.
While
many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues
finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
【答案】45.C
46.B
47.A
48.D
根据第一段中的“A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. ”科学家通过给四岁左右的孩子每人一块糖,并观察他们如何处理糖的问题,最终能够预知未来。可知作者在文章开头提到实验是为了引出文章的主题。故选C。
46.考查细节理解。根据第二段中的“A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. ”一项调查发现,那些四岁时有足够的自制力坚持的人一般长大后更受欢迎、富有冒险精神、自信和可靠。可知四岁儿童的实验表明自我控制能力对个人成功的作用。故选B。
47.考查词义猜测。根据第四段中的“But brain theory can't explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would defeat a less resistant person. ”脑理论不能解释我们所困惑的,比如为什么有些人在面对令人沉沦的麻烦时,仍会保持乐观。可知词义为乐观积极。故选A。
根据倒数第二段中的“What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together”可知研究者们一直试图了解他们是如何一起工作的,即科学家们还没有发现情商和智商是如何协同工作的,故选D。
