Angie Carel has always loved drawing with her family. About 12 years ago, when she was a single mom, she did a lot of art, almost daily. Now, three of Carel’s daughters are grown — but when the pandemic(疫情) hit and in-person learning and sports were stopped, they found themselves back at her house in Roanoke, Indiana. And their mom found herself turning to art again.
“Everyone was just sad and anxious. So, I had this idea one morning, ‘I’m going to make my daughters draw.’ Because that’s our happy place,” said Carel. “I sent them a text message that just said, ‘Draw a smiling turtle. And show me your artwork this evening at 7.’ And they did and they were laughing; we were laughing so hard at everyone’s drawing.”
The drawing brought joy to others, because they shared their interesting drawings on Facebook. Angie’s friends wanted to join in, and soon, Angie had a whole community online waiting for and following her drawing prompts (提示).
When more and more people were interested in her drawing prompts, she created the “Simple Daily Drawing” Facebook group. It has grown to more than 8,000 members, who draw whatever Angie chooses. Angie started asking members why they were joining, thinking they just liked art but the answers surprised her.
Angie said she knew her own family was using the drawings for mental health, but after surveying the members, she was surprised to realize about 80% of the people that joined were there to use the art for mental health too. “Every day there is somebody that says something about how this is helping them, and because of that, I just have to keep going. I’m not going to stop until my brain runs out of ideas.” she said.

Communication is the basic quality of human beings. But most people fail to have the courage to talk freely with people they have first met in any place. I have many years of experience of interviewing guests on TV. I find that communication for some people is easy. However, it can also become a tough task for introverted people, because they feel awkward about meeting and speaking to other people, especially the people they know recently.
To communicate freely with people, first of all, we have to keep our attitudes right. When we enter a new place, it’s polite to introduce ourselves at first. It’s also a good idea to wait for the seniors to invite us to shake hands. Then, we can focus on their notebooks or mobile phones and say, “Good choices; they are very beautiful.” This shows that we like them. Sometimes there are certain things that can start a conversation, like the classroom we are in or the local news we both know. However, don’t voice our opinions on people’s faces and heights.
Besides, we need to carefully listen to what others say. Talking without stopping is always not a good idea; we should also pause and listen to others’ responses. Try to be actively involved in their topics and views. When they find us reliable and friendly to talk to, we will find them nice too. Let the conversation lead us, and we’ll see that one topic leads to another.
Last but not least, do stay in touch after leaving. It’s very rude not to ask for the contact number, especially after the other people have helped you. Even if we don’t want to have further communication, just occasional greetings are necessary. It shows that we attach great importance to them.
28. What can we infer about the author from the text
A. She’s a student. B. She’s a host. C. She’s a farmer. D. She’s a teacher.
29. What does the underlined word “introverted” mean in Paragraph 1
A. Frank. B. Generous. C. Shallow. D. Shy.
30. What should we do when we meet strange people
A. Try to find common topics. B. Judge their appearance.
C. Invite the seniors to shake hands. D. Wait for others to introduce themselves.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. How to avoid awkward situations B. How to stay in touch with friends
C. How to show respect to the seniors D. How to communicate with new friends
D
“If you don’t behave, I’ll call the police” is a lie that parents might use to get their young children to behave. A new psychology study led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, tries to explain the result of this phenomenon.
The research team asked 379 young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents as adults, and how well they respond to adulthood challenges.
The first questionnaire (问卷) asked these young adults to recall if their parents told them lies about eating, leaving or staying, spending money and so on. Some examples of such lies are “If you don’t come with me now, I will leave you here by yourself” and “I don’t bring money with me today; we can come back another day”. The second questionnaire included questions that could show how often they lie to their parents as adults. Lastly, these young adults filled in two other questionnaires that asked them about their mental problems. Most of the participants (参与者)whose parents had told lies said they faced greater difficulty in meeting mental and social challenges as adults.
Parenting by lying can seem to save time, especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something are difficult to explain. In addition, parents may fail to come up with a more efficient solution to children’s misbehavior.
This study has its limitations. The result of the study depends on the memory of participants, which is shallow. Future research can try to include more information, such as parents’ interviews and real experiments.
Despite that, parents should know these possible risks and consider other ways to replace lying, such as knowing children’s feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and solving problems together.
32. What can we learn from the psychology study
A. Children can recognize their parents' lies.
B. Parents are used to controlling their children by lying.
C. Parenting by lying has a negative influence on children whey grow up.
D. Children fail to remember the lies told by their parents when they were little.
33. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Why parents lie to their children.
B. Why parenting is a difficult job.
C. How parents can explain difficult things.
D. How parents can come up with better solutions.
34. What is the author's attitude towards the result of the study
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Interested.
35. Why does the author write the last paragraph
A. To give an example. B. To make a suggestion.
C. To draw a comparison. D. To present a fact.

The black box is used to record all the activities of a plane during its flight. There are generally two black boxes in a plane. One is at the front and the other on the back of an airplane. The black box is made of titanium metal (钛金属). 36 The titanium box gives it the strength to stand any shock if it falls in the sea or falls from the height. Earlier the box was red in color, so it was called “red egg”. The walls inside the box were black in color, so it came to be known as “black box”.

The other is cockpit(座舱) voice recorder. 38 It records the sound of engines, emergency alarms, etc., which people use to predict the conditions of the plane before any accident happens.
The black box can work for 30 days without electricity. When this box is lost anywhere, it keeps on sending out the waves along with a beep sound for about 30 days. 39 It can also send out waves from the depth of 14,000 feet in the sea.
A black box does not show a clear picture of plane accidents even if it can be found. 40 However, it can help find out the facts about plane accidents if it is found.

Suddenly she saw a lady get out of the car and walk towards the bank. Her wallet fell on the ground. Not knowing it, the lady went into the bank.
Jane picked up the wallet. There were so many people inside the bank that she decided to wait on the steps. After a long time the lady came out. Jane handed her the wallet. The lady couldn’t believe the little girl had been waiting for her for so long to hand her the wallet.

The lady led the little girl to the front of her shop. “You will have to come here and collect your dress,” the lady said. In the evening Jane went to the shop and was speechless to see how beautiful her dress looked. The stains were covered with patchwork. The lady had increased the length of the dress. The collar and sleeves had been decorated with flower designs as well. Jane was very pleased. The lady had also sewed a bag in which there were lots of shells as a birthday gift for Jane’s friend.
“Ask your father to see me tomorrow,” the lady said. “With so many orders to complete, I need a helper.
