The lion dance holds a special place in the hearts of people in Guangdong Province. In history, it was a men’s art only. However, the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team from Renhe Town, Guangzhou, broke the tradition with an all-girl team.
Coach Zhang Zheliang saw the number of young lion dancers going down so he started to train girls in 2018. However, the villagers didn’t like this. Girl dancers couldn’t even perform as some villagers took away their dance props (道具) or drove them off.
However, Zhang and his coach, Yu Weizhao, didn’t give up their idea of setting up an all-girl lion dance team. They finally found girl dancers and trained them hard.
Their hard work paid off when the girls won their first big prize over the men’s teams in 2021. They won more times and this made them respected (受人尊重的) in the lion dance community. Today, the team has over 20 girls aged 7 to 19.
The team’s success isn’t just about winning prizes. It’s about breaking bias (偏见). More girls start to learn the lion dance because of them.
Did you know The lion dance needs teamwork. In Guangdong, a one- lion dance usually needs eight performers— the lion head, the lion tail, one drummer, one gong player, and four cymbal players.
The girl behind the lion head Li Jiawen, 17, joined the Nanxing Hexingtang Women’s Lion Dance Team in 2018. She played the part of the lion head when they won their first big prize. The head was heavy, but she still had to lift it up really high to reach at least 1.7 meters. At the same time, she needed to show the lion’s rich facial expressions (面部表情). However, she was not good at it first. She went to the lion dance team’s training every Friday and Saturday from 7: 30 pm to 10 pm. She practiced really hard.
