I teach at UNLV three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, a young man asked me why I always seemed to be so cheerful.
His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before. “Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to live your life that day.” I said. “I choose to be cheerful.”
“Let me give you an example,” I continued. “Besides teaching here, I also teach out at another college in Henderson, 17 miles down the highway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago, I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I drove off the highway and turned on to College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but it didn’t work. So I put my car lights on, took my books, and walked down the road to the college.”
“As soon as I got there, I called AAA and arranged (安排) for a tow truck (牵引车) to meet me at my car after class. A teacher in the office asked me what has happened. ‘This is my lucky day,’ I replied, smiling.”
“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day ” She was puzzled (疑惑的). “What do you mean ”
“I live 17 miles from here.” I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the highway. It didn’t. Instead, it broke down at the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. Time flies when we play with our smart phone. But when we get down to the real business of work and study, one hour feels like a year. Why are we so addicted(入迷的) to smart phones but easily bored by studying
It all boils down to something small and hard to see: dopamine(多巴胺). Dopamine is a “pleasure chemical(化学物质)” that makes people feel good. Our brains produce it when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we get a prize.
Compared with studying, playing with smart phones causes our brains to produce more dopamine. For example, checking our phone for a text leads to a 400 percent increase in dopamine. But why
When we play with smart phones, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or who will send us a message. This uncertainty(不确定性) makes the dopamine system active. We get excited, wondering if we have messages from our friends. When our expectations are met, dopamine is produced. And to get more dopamine, we continue checking our phones. Studying doesn’t provide such uncertainty. Without this excitement, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that According to scientists, apps can become less interesting if we turn off notifications(通知) or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits on apps to avoid using them too much.
“As for studying, you could check our progress daily or weekly and reward yourself for it,” said Daniel Wong, writer of The Happy Student. “You could also search for interesting topics connected with your textbooks. Use what you’ve learned to make a difference in the real world. This will make knowledge much more interesting to learn.”

A.Why do people like uncertainty.
B.How to get more messages from our friends.

D.Why playing with smartphones causes more dopamine.
34.How can we make apps less interesting according to Paragraph 5
①Turn off notifications. ②Check them less often.
③Set time limits and allow for breaks. ④Change the screen colors to black and white.
A.①② B.①③ C.①④ D.②④

六、书面表达(20分)
Last weekend, our school organized a visit to the Science and Technology Museum. I saw many models of planes, satellites and rockets that I had never seen before. China had great achievements in space exploration. I also saw many robots that can work as human’s helpers. They were smart and interesting. Besides, I learned the development history of computers. The first computer was much larger and heavier than that we have today. In the museum, we could also see some small inventions in our daily life such as the toy ships. It was really an eye-opening day to me.
When I saw these in the museum I was proud that human beings had made great progress in technological innovation. As we all know, the science and technology are the primary productive forces and the first competitiveness. We Chinese need to work hard to promote scientific and technological development and innovation, which will make our country stronger and better. As a student, I will study hard to get into a top university. In this way, I can get more chance to make a great contribution to China’s science and technology industry.
