Every Wednesday evening, a group of young people show up at an activity center in Shanghai to learn the art of Chinese engraving (版画). The class begins at 7 pm, but they usually arrive earlier to practice. Actually, they’re members of a night school project. Most of them are office workers and go to the class after work.
Working during the day and learning new skills at night is becoming a new way of life for young people in China. From dancing to singing, from traditional culture, beauty, and language classes, to wine tasting and tea making, the list of possibilities for new learning experiences seems limitless.
This trend (趋势) first started in Shanghai. The course, organized by the Shanghai Mass Art Center and given at 123 teaching locations, are available for local people aged between 18 and 55. Members can take 12 lessons given by professionals at a cost of about 500 yuan, far below the market price.
The idea of night schools isn’t new in China. In the 1980s, there were a number of similar projects across the country run by colleges and universities and they offered courses in reading and writing. Today, things are quite different. The night school project is no longer made to provide basic education. Instead, it offers courses to meet the needs and interests of young adults.
“After work, I often waste my time on the phone, and this leads to a sense of emptiness. But at night school, I can learn something new and have a more colorful life,” said 29-year-old Yang Xu, a student in the Chinese engraving class.

In order to save Mexican axolotls (蝾螈), the Mexican government encourages the public to virtually adopt (云领养) them.
The unusual Mexican axolotl has a long body, short legs, and a long tail. Its body is covered with smooth, slimy skin (黏糊糊的皮肤). The axolotl is an amazing animal. It can improve water quality. It can also regrow almost any lost body part. For this reason, it is considered as a wonder of biology. Some scientists think the information could help solve some medical problems.
However, the population of axolotls has fallen greatly over the years. In 1998, there were about 6,000 axolotls per square kilometer in Lake Xochimilco. In the last count from 2014, there were only about 36 axolotls per square kilometer. The situation has got worse and they have been in danger of extinction (灭绝) for years, according to Luis Zambrano, a professor from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The biggest danger to axolotls comes from humans. Mexico City’s growing population has led to less and less living space for axolotls. Industrial activities have had a bad influence on water quality, which makes axolotls unhealthy. In the water, some fish eat axolotl eggs.
Thanks to social media and the video game Minecraft, axolotls are more popular than ever, which leads to a huge demand (需求) for axolotls in pet stores. Zambrano hopes that will help save axolotls.
Last year, his team carried out an activity to virtually adopt axolotls. People were encouraged to help pay for axolotls’ meals or their habitat (栖息地). “We know what to do. We know where to do it. And we know that if we do that properly, we will have a healthy population of axolotls,” Zambrano said, “But if people don’t care too much, it doesn’t matter what we know.”
8. The axolotl is important to biology because of its _______.
A. unusual appearance
B. role in water quality
C. ability to regrow body parts
9. How does the writer prove that the number of axolotls has dropped

10. Which question does Paragraph 4 answer

B. What should people do to save axolotls
C. Why have axolotls been in danger of extinction
11. What is the purpose of Zambrano’s words

Nowadays, people use computers to do a lot of things every day, like searching for information and sending e-mails. But none of them would go well without the computer mouse (鼠标).
The first computer mouse appeared in 1964, invented by Douglas Engelbart. It was mainly made up of a wooden “house”, a circuit (电路) board and two metal wheels. Engelbart called his invention the “Bug”. But the long “tail” on the back made it look like a mouse, so the name became well-known soon.
Eight years later, Bill English, an American computer engineer, developed the mouse further. He changed the wheels into a rolling (滚动的) ball at the bottom of the mouse. The “Ball Mouse” was easier to use and could be found in lots of offices. It had its problems, though. For example, the ball became dirty easily from rolling round the desktop. The dirt had to be often cleaned out to keep the ball running well.
The disadvantages led to the next development around 1980. Then the optical mouse (光学鼠标) was invented. However, the optical mouse wasn’t widely used because it was too expensive.

C ability to regrow body parts
9. How does the writer prove that the number of axolotls has dropped
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling stories. C. By giving an example.
10. Which question does Paragraph 4 answer
A. What advantages do axolotls have
B. What should people do to save axolotls
C. Why have axolotls been in danger of extinction
11. What is the purpose of Zambrano’s words
A. To introduce a special animal in Mexico.
B. To call on people to pay attention to axolotls and save them.
C. To encourage the public to send axolotls to pet stores.

The computer mouse has come a long way since its invention. It has been improved many times to meet the changing needs of users.
