At a family reunion one year, I noticed that my 13-year-old granddaughter Lauren was not including her cousin Emily in her small circle of three friends.
I pulled Lauren aside, and thought of giving her a lecture (训斥) on 15 . Just then I remembered a 16 experience when I was about the same age as Lauren. I was left out in group activities, and I felt terrible. Seeing that, a thoughtful teacher asked me to hand out papers one day. Although the teacher’s kind act didn’t make me a member of the group at once, it 17 my self-confidence and created chances for communication with my classmates.
So, instead of giving Lauren a lecture, I changed my way. “Would you and the other girls be willing to make cupcakes for everyone ” I asked.
“Yes!” Lauren’s face brightened, but then 18 . “Hmm… does Emily have to help ” she asked.
This wasn’t a question I was hoping for. I told her firmly (坚定地) that Emily needed to be 19 . Then I told the other three girls about the plan. They were very happy with the idea, but Lauren wasn’t.
I gave each of them tasks for making the cupcakes. Soon, all the four girls 20 themselves in measuring (测量) mixing, and high-fiving one another. I could tell they had a great time there. When the cupcakes were ready, the kitchen was a mess, so I gave each girl their own clean-up duties. More high-fiving. More 21 .
Soon after, I heard laughter in the living room that evening. I noticed Lauren sitting on the floor behind Emily, brushing her hair while Emily was laughing at something Lauren had said. Obviously, my plan of involving them in an activity 22 .
After the family reunion, I told Lauren how kind of her it was to ask Emily to take part in their activities.
Now the four girls are young adults. They don’t see each other often, but each time they meet up, they never 23 to laugh about the messy kitchen they made that time. This best proves that having teens involved is much more 24 than just lecturing when teaching them how they should behave.

16. A. valuable B. special C. common D. similar
17. A. formed B. produced C. increased D. improved

One of the phrases which greatly puzzled me was “entertaining angels unaware”. How could anybody be unaware of entertaining an angel I had never thought that angelic qualities could hide under very common voices and in everyday bodies.
My angel, as it turned out, hid inside the little figure of my school-teacher, Miss McKenzie. To me, she was always a little old lady, with her grey hair framing a round rosy face and caught up in an old-fashioned bun (发髻) on top of her head.
Although I enjoyed Miss McKenzie’s approval, I never really felt very close to her. It never dawned on me to ask her advice as to what I should do when I left school. Surely there was only one thing to do: get a job and earn money as quickly as possible. But Miss McKenzie had other ideas. We in our house knew nothing of scholarships for fatherless children. The idea of a child from a working-class family going to college was the very thing of story-books.
Unknown to us, she forced the headmaster to put my name forward for a special scholarship open to children who showed some promise, and who would receive further education. He agreed, although he was a bit worried about the cost of keeping me at college for a whole year. No earnings from me, and fares and clothes to be covered, for, of course, only the fees would be paid if I won.
Miss McKenzie brushed all argument (争论) aside. To this day I can remember my complete feelings when, on being asked if she felt I had any special qualities, this elderly teacher banged the desk with her hand, and declared (断言) in an American saying I never suspected she knew, “I’d bet my bottom dollar on this girl!”
I shook at the passion (激情) in her voice, and at her trust in me. “What if I fail her ” I thought to myself. “What if she has to pay all the money back if I let her down ” I knew we hadn’t a spare dollar to repay anybody, and I was sick with a sense of responsibility in case I messed up.
The time at college went by quickly. At the end of my year at college, I was able to lay before her the college gold medal as the year’s top student and a whole pile of awards.
And suddenly as I looked at her, and saw her eyes shining with pride behind the gold-rimmed glasses, I realized how widely she had thrown open the door of chance for me. And I knew for the first time what the phrase “entertaining angels unaware” meant. For there, standing before me in class, was my very own angel, Miss McKenzie.
31. In Paragraph 6, the writer felt ________ when she heard Miss McKenzie’s passionate voice.
A. surprised and encouraged B. excited and pleased
C. nervous and curious D. worried and hopeful
32. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. everyone could get a scholarship if the headmaster agreed to
B. she finally found that her angel was Miss McKenzie
C. it is unlikely for children from an ordinary family to further their study in college
D. the writer had the idea of going to work after she left school
33. Which is the best title for this story
A. A Successful Girl B. An Important Chance
C. Love from Teacher D. Gift from Scholarship

Do you know full confidence in your memory Look at the two pictures and choose the one which you think is correct. Then check with the answer.
Answer: The one on the right is correct. Pikachu never had a black tail in any of its various versions. Its yellow tail does have brown fur at its base, but there is no sign of black fur on its tail. There has been a discussion about whether it is shi or si in the sentence. “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man…”
Most people voted si as what they learned at school. However, People’s Education Press (PEP), a leading publisher of Chinese textbooks, claimed on Oct. 26 that all its textbooks say shi. Supporters of si feel shocked and say they’ve experienced the “Mandela Effect”—the situation in which a large number of people believe that an event happened when it didn’t.
Many people believed that former South African president Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s in prison. However, Mandela was alive and well, finally passing away in 2013. US researcher Fiona Broome created a website to detail her discovery of this public phenomenon (现象), coining the term which has been in use till now.
Some often joke that our memories have been changed by a strange force. In fact, psychologists have looked into the reasons for the Mandela Effect, as reported on the US-based website Verywell Mind.
For example, your mind may fill in gaps missing in your memory to make more sense of it, which is called confabulation (虚构症). However, try not to feel bad—this is not lying, but rather remembering details that never happened.
The Internet may be another reason why we tend to have Mandela Effect events, as the news we read can be false from the beginning. In 2018, Science Journal published a study of over 100,000 news stories discussed across Twitter. It showed that false news can spread faster and reach more people than the truth. As a powerful way to spread information, the internet might be the main reason for falsehoods to enter our minds.
34. Why does the writer mention the discussion about the sentence in Paragraph 2
A. To solve a mystery of Mandela Effect.
B. To raise readers’ interest in confabulation.
C. To introduce the topic of the Mandela Effect.
D. To discuss which word is the right one, si or shi.
35. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “coining” in Paragraph 4
A. creating. B. borrowing. C. describing. D correcting.
36. What is the “Mandela Effect” about
A. Attitudes to a special event. B. A kind of psychological effect.
C. The benefit of good memory. D. The effect of Mandela’s death.
37. What can we infer from the passage
A. Most people know the former South African president Mandela well.
B. The word si or shi both existed in Chinese textbooks published by the PEP.
C. If you can tell the right Pikachu, you will never suffer from the Mandela Effect.
D. If you remember details that never happened, you may experience the Mandela Effect.

Over two thousand years ago, the Greek writer Plato wrote in dialogues about Atlantis, an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The island’s people were very rich. They built a big city with many great buildings. According to Plato, the royal palace was a wonder to see for its size and beauty. It sat on a perfectly round island, surrounded by rings of water and land. Gardens, golden temples, a horse-racing track, and fancy bath houses filled the island rings. Ships sailed in the circular waterways, bringing goods from all over the world. The whole place was filled with fruit and flowers. Wise kings ruled over happy people.
But the people became greedy — they had many things, but they still wanted more. So the gods became angry. With deadly earthquakes and floods, the island sank into the sea, never to be seen again.
Ever since, people wondered: was Atlantis a real place If Atlantis was real, where is it now
Many explorers have looked for Atlantis. In 2004, explorer Robert Sarmast reported finding the remains of a city under the sea near Cyprus. However, Sarmast and other scientists later realized the structures he found under the sea were not man-made. Mark Adams, author of the 2016 book Meet Me in Atlantis believes the city was in Morocco. Plato wrote about red and black stone circles around the city. Adams found similar red and black stones there, very near the Atlantic Ocean. But how could Atlantis be in the desert
Most people, however, think Atlantis is simply a story. Plato may have been inspired (赋予灵感) by a real place. About 1,500 B.C., a volcano erupted (火山爆发) on the Greek island of Santorini. It destroyed much of the island, though half is still there. Earthquakes and floods swept the nearby island of Crete.
As a boy, Plato probably heard tales of the Santorini eruption, although it happened long before he was born. He lived on an island and had experienced earthquakes. But his story of Atlantis was not meant as true history. He told it as a story designed to teach people not to be greedy. Still, he described it so vividly that his imaginary island continues to amaze us.
The 54 City of Atlantis
Writer Plato, a Greek writer
Description of Atlantis Located in the Atlantic Ocean, it was a city built on an island. There were many people of great 55 living on the island. One day, gods got angry with them and made earthquakes and floods destroy the city.
Various theories about Atlantis tale In 2004, Robert Sarmast reported parts of a city 56 under the sea near Cyprus. Later, the structures under the sea proved to be 57 . In 2016, Mark Adams announced in his book that he found red and black stones similar to those in Plato’s book.
Conclusion His story of Atlantis wasn’t true history, 58 Plato described it quite vividly.
