Three years ago, I left my motherland Spain to study alone in London. My parents had to bring up my three younger sisters and two younger brothers, so I found three part-time jobs to pay for my studies. I was really tired all the time.
Unluckily, I had a high fever. Because I had spent all my free time working, I hardly took part in any activities and I had no friends. Besides, I was too shy to ask others for help. After sleeping on the sickbed for two days, I went out to get some food. Normally, I went to the supermarket, but this time I went into the Greek shop, a small corner shop, because it was closer.
I picked up some food and gave it to the shopkeeper, who asked me, “You look terrible, my boy! You are not feeling well, right ” I said YES in a low voice. She pointed at the salami (腊肠) and bread I was buying and offered, “I can make you a sandwich, so you don’t have to do it yourself.” I nodded without saying a word.
So, she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went into the back room and came again with a bowl of hot soup. “It will warm you up, ” she said with a friendly smile.
What really warmed me up was not the soup. Her smile told me she cared about me. Her kindness was like my mother’s.

One of the common problems between parents and teenagers is chores around the house. Studies show that only 20% of parents are happy with the amount(数量)of housework that their teenagers do.
What affects(影响)the amount of housework that teenagers do There is more than one factor(因素). Teenagers with mothers who have jobs usually do more chores at home. Also, teenagers from large families always do more housework. For boys, how much housework their fathers do affects a lot.
At the age of 7 or 8, girls and boys may spend similar amounts of time on housework. But as they get older, girls may do more housework than boys. At around 15 or 16 years old, teenagers usually want to spend more time with friends, so they will do less chores around the house.
The chores that parents give their children often show the difference between boys and girls. For example, boys are often asked to do outdoor chores like shopping, cleaning the car and taking out the rubbish. But girls often get indoor chores such as kitchen work, house cleaning, and taking care of young children. Probably the best way to encourage teenagers to take on different chores is by setting an example. Boys may be ready to do some “women’s chores” if they see their fathers doing them.

Dear Sir,
I think it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. It is not enough to just get good grades at school.
Children these days depend on their parents too much. They are always asking, “Could you get this for me ” or “Could you help me with that ” Doing chores helps to develop children’s independence and teaches them how to look after themselves. It also helps them to understand the idea of fairness. Since they live in one house with their parents, they should know that everyone should do their part in keeping it clean and tidy. Our neighbors’ son got into a good college but during his first year, he had no idea how to take care of himself. As a result, he often fell ill and his grades dropped. The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.
