Modern workers can set an alarm clock to wake them up in the morning. But British workers during the Industrial Age used a different method for rising each morning. From the 19th century to the 20th century, a human alarm clock known as a “Knocker-up” would go down the streets and wake paying customers in time for work. They may use a stick to tap (轻敲) on windows or a pea shooter (豌豆枪) to shoot the windows with dried peas.
During that time, people worked in factories at unusual hours. They could have used alarm clocks, which had been invented by the mid-19th century, but people thought they were expensive.
Knocker-ups became common around the UK. Many of them were older and woke people up for many years. They were very professional and often wouldn’t leave people’s houses until they were sure their customers were awake.
Mary Anne Smith was a quite popular knocker-up around London’s East End in the 1930s. Every morning except Sunday she would rise at three to “Knock up” local workers—using a pea shooter with the light but clear sound.
Although this method of waking people up went on in some parts of the UK until the 1970s, it slowly disappeared as alarm clocks and electricity became popular and cheaper. But anyway, the alarm clocks and morning music of the smart phones cannot match the soft, special tap of Mary Smith’s pea shooter.
43. Why weren’t alarm clocks used widely by British workers before the 1970s

Titles like “taoli” and “quanzi” have rooted (根植于) themselves deeply into ancient Chinese history and culture. Let’s have a look.
Modesty and respect
Chinese people often call their sons quanzi. When Chinese parents use quanzi to refer to their sons, they are being modest (谦虚的). Of course, most parents have high expectations for their children and want them to be successful. However, they don’t usually talk about this in front of others. Instead, they try to play it down. This is similar to that even rich Chinese people may call their big houses hanshe.
Although people are modest about themselves, they praise others a lot. They call their own sons quanzi, but others’ sons linglang, which is a respectful way to say “your son”.
Spreading seeds (种子) of education
There is a Chinese idiom (俗语) taoli mantianxia, referring to a teacher who has taught so many students that they spread across the country like peach and plum trees (桃树和李树). The idiom comes from a story about Zizhi. As a teacher, Zizhi was both kind and strict. He often pointed at a peach and plum tree in his yard when asking his students to work hard. “You should become a useful person to benefit society, just like when the peach and plum trees bloom (开花) and produce fruit,” he said.
Keeping these words in their minds, many of Zizhi’s students went on to different places around the country, achieving great things along the way. Since then, “peach and plum trees” has been used to refer to students who have been successful in their jobs.
46. Why do Chinese people call their sons “quanzi”

Anne Hidalgo, the leader of Paris, has long worked to make her city less dependent on cars. She wanted to see more people using bicycles to get around.
Over a number of years, the city government controlled the use of cars and increased the amount of bike lanes (车道) from 200 kilometers to over 1,000 kilometers. Now, her effort seems to have worked out.
This year, Parisians (巴黎人) are not complaining about too much busy traffic. Now you see people riding bikes, running, and walking along the River Seine. In another part of Paris, a bike path on Sebastopol Boulevard is one of the busiest in Europe. Instead of the honking (汽车喇叭声发出) and pollutive gas from cars, Paris will become known for bikers, some experts say.
The city will host the summer Olympics in 2024 and plan to add more bike lanes by then. Paris wants to reduce its pollution by half during the games.
With more people using bikes, more people are making mistakes. Some new bikers don’t follow the traffic rules. “Paris has become unlivable. No one can stand each other.” Gelernt, a retired old man, complained, “Everyone behaves selfishly (自私)…the traffic is a lot worse than it was”.
But the environment may be improving. Riding bikes is good exercise and helps reduce pollution, which is still a problem for the large city.
50. Why has Anne Hidalgo taken some action to encourage people to use bicycles
A. To control the use of bikes.
B. To make Paris famous for cyclists.
C. To host the Summer Olympics in 2024.
D. To make her city less dependent on cars.
51. Why does Gelern complain that “Paris has become unlivable”
A. There are too many bikes in Paris. B. Some people break the traffic rules.
C. The environment is a lot worse. D. More bike lanes will be added by 2024.
52. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Bike Problems in Paris B. Famous Leaders of Paris
C. Traffic Rules of Paris D. Bikes Have Changed Paris
【答案】50. D 51. B 52. D

Last month, we had a spring outing. My classmates and I went to an educational base in the city of Dujiangyan.
We were told that we needed to cook by ourselves there. So before setting out, we prepared fresh vegetables and meat such as potatoes and pork. Spices (调味品) like oil and salt were also needed.
When we arrived the next day, we were really surprised. The “kitchen” was so original (原始的)! Standing on the grass, we found only a big iron pot on top of a pile of bricks (砖块). There was no kitchen hood (抽油烟机) or gas. We needed to make a fire by ourselves. We had never experienced anything like this before. Not surprisingly, we didn’t have good control over the fire. Some students just made undercooked (未煮熟的) food.
I cooked garlic spareribs (蒜香排骨). At first, I mistook cooking wine for oil and poured it into the pot. Unbelievable! But luckily, we found out in time. We cleaned the pot and started all over again. There were even more funny mistakes like that. However, we still finished our task.
On the way back to school, students talked about this fun experience. We enjoyed the natural beauty and learned some important life skills. So, for those students who never cook, I would say: ________.

For example, the grades will go down, and using computers too much does harm to your health. What’s worse, it may destroy your relationship with your family.
