It wasn’t insecurity that 3 me to madness but the fact that this was my third time being the new kid. 4 moving does something to a child’s development. I 5 finding reliable friends. But this time dad’s company 6 my starting and finishing high school in the same place. This time mattered, which made me nervous.
I emerged proudly in a patterned dress after riding (扫荡) my closet. I felt just as 7 as I stepped off the bus. But my jaw dropped to the floor when I found Mrs. Hutfilz, my English teacher, wearing the exact same 8 as I did. The students raised heads as I shared my story. My smile 14 as I giggled with my peers. After class, I stayed behind, sharing with Mrs. Hutfilz my previous understanding about coming into a new school and state. I was relieved to make a humorous and genuine 15 with my first teacher in the coming days

(2024·天津和平·高三天津一中校考二模)A few years ago, I stood underneath a red overhanging cliff near my hometown, Carbondale, Colorado. The scenery was 21 . Elk chewed on the brown grasses by the river below. A hawk rode the wind.
I was tied in, ready to climb. I was 22 to do a tough route for the first time. “Onsight”, (首次攀登) as we call it, means I didn’t know where I was climbing to. It would be a hard onsight for me to onsight a difficult route. You need focus. No 23 .
Just as I was about to climb, 24 in my body, which I hadn’t felt yet, said hello. That was not good for any athlete. 25 , I painted a coat of confidence on my inner walls of doubt to ease my tension. That moment got me thinking, and then researching. At some point, I framed this experience 36 simple arithmetic: When I added (determination, self-confidence, desire), I 37 ; when I took away (the desire for success); my body moved with greater 38 and I improved. I enjoyed it more as well, which, as an athlete of 30 years, I didn’t think was 39 . I discovered the 40 of subtraction.

(2024·天津和平·高三统考二模)The mission of Faces of Santa Ana is to lovingly engage the homeless through art. In July 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife had just moved to Santa Ana, California with a burning desire in their hearts to love their neighbors. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a(n) 161 man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them 162 at night. Peterson, 28, would pass the guy on his way to work as a car designer, but they never 163 .
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his 164 disturbed by the homeless man. 165 by the book’s compassionate (有同情心的) message, Peterson made a(n) 166 decision: He was going outside to introduce himself.
In that first 167 , Peterson learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris. He’d moved to Southern California to pursue a career 168 , but he soon fell on hard times and 169 living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was a strange thing to me,” Peterson recalled later. “I saw 170 on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year. And the 171 inside of him inspired me. ” 172 Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could 173 Faris’s portrait. And Faris said yes.
Peterson’s 174 with Faris led him to form Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization focused on
175 and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the 30-by-40-inch canvas(画布) — signed by both subject and artist—for a few thousand dollars, and put half into what he calls a “love account” for his 176 .
Many of Peterson’s new friends use the donations to secure immediate 177 — medical care, hotel rooms, food. Faris used the funds from his portrait to record an album, realizing his 178 dreams.
Peterson has painted 41 of these portraits himself. He’s discovered that the buyers tend to connect to the story of the person in the painting, finding 179 and often friendship with someone they might have otherwise overlooked. “People often tell me, ‘I was the one that would cross the street. But I see homeless people 180 now,” Peterson says. “I didn’t know that would happen. ”
