The Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service is one of the volunteer groups that worked at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The 192 young volunteers worked for 66 days and offered more than 15,000 hours of service.
It is not an easy job to work as a volunteer. Liu Junyu, 28, from the team, found out the way to help people get in and out of the venue (场馆) more easily and safely. Other volunteers helped clear 50,000 m2 of ice and snow each day. This made sure that the games worked well.
Also, a volunteer needs to learn a lot. According to Jiang Meng, a 26-year-old volunteer from the Shougang Group, volunteers needed to know all about the venues. They also kept in mind the history and stories behind them to better show the beauty of Shougang and Beijing to guests.

（2024·吉林长春·一模）Growing up in Saudi Arabia, 44-year-old photographer Jody MacDonald has always had a strong interest in the desert. “I have always wanted to spend some time in the Sahara,” MacDonald said. “There are still so many unexplored (未经探索的) areas in the Sahara Desert. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days that they interest me much, so finally I made the journey.” MacDonald started her journey in Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott, and headed inland where she and her team jumped on the world’s longest cargo train (货运列车) for a 435-mile journey on the Mauritania Railway. “The train was dirty and uncomfortable but it was such an interesting and unique way to travel through the vast desert by train,” said MacDonald.
MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travelers also had to deal with the heat and winds. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour,” MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up.”
She dealt with the harsh (恶劣的) conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather dictates (决定) when and where you travel,” said MacDonald. Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.
Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn’t think Motorola’s product was good enough. He didn’t like AT&T’s idea of a car phone, either. The man wanted to give the world something new. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.
It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design (设计) the world’s first cell phone. The product was called DynaTAC． People could talk on it for 25 minutes before its battery (电池) died. The phone’s short battery life wasn’t a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why Well, the phone was too heavy (1, 100 grams) to hold in hand for too long!
On April 3, 1973, Cooper made the world’s first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, “I’m calling you on a cell phone. It’s a real, handheld cell phone.” On the other end of the line, there was only silence.

Podareva always wanted to be a cultural ambassador (使者) between the two countries. In 2020, she began to make videos and shared them online. Besides sharing Chinese poems she had written, Podareva also produced videos about cultural differences between China and Russia. Sometimes she made humorous videos to explain the misunderstandings that Chinese people have towards Russians.
Podareva was not only good at writing poems but also good at painting. She didn’t think the two art forms were different from each other. “Wang Wei was a famous Chinese poet, and he was also a painter,” she said. In December 2022, Podareva showed 66 of her paintings in Shanghai.

One day, when they came home after visiting their uncle, they saw a river. They decided to have a race and who could go across the river first would win the race. The two ducks swam quickly down to the river. Both of them knew the way very well, but Quack wanted to try a quicker way. He knew that currents (水流) in the middle of the river were faster and that they would help him win. However, their mother had told them never to swim in the middle of a river. That night, my piano performance was the most important thing in my family. To see my performance, my grandparents would come by plane. My aunt Dianne, a successful news reporter, would come as well, though she was quite busy with her TV news every night.
