The girls first “met” when they were babies. Sarah was disabled with only one arm, and her mother wanted to meet the parents of similar children. She found Paige’s mother on the Internet and learned that Paige also had only one arm. The girls’ parents shared letters and photos.

Sarah and Paige always showed each other how to do things with one arm, such as painting their fingernails(指甲). “Sarah has taught me a lot,” said Paige, “and she gives me a lot of confidence. I can tell Sarah some private things while I won’t share them with other friends. I trust her.”

He picked 20 girls from the fourth and fifth grades and offered them free training, clothing and meals at school.

As a nature teacher, Han Mingzhe, 30, loves taking kids to explore (探索) trees. “I have the kids close their eyes and let them feel the trees with their hands. I call this game Discover My Tree,” Han said. When the kids find their trees, they light up with joy, like meeting old friends.
Han is always amazed by his students’ imagination. “They might call a walnut (核桃) tree a ‘bomb (炸弹) tree’ because its falling walnuts are like ‘bombs’. And the Chinese privet (冬青) might look like a ‘drone (无人机)’ in children’s eyes, so they call it a ‘drone tree’,” Han said.
Han said that looking at trees is a simple activity that doesn’t need any special tools or knowledge from before.
“You can learn about a tree by looking at the tree’s appearance and color. You can look at the leaves and see how they are different,” said Han. “If you can find a tree with flowers, that’s even better. You can study the flower’s shape and color. You can also collect fallen fruits or leaves. These are the gifts from the tree that you should treasure in your heart.” he added.
“Trees are the treasures that the earth prepares for us. In its life, one tree can take in 1 ton of CO . And it produces about 118 kg of O2 per year,” noted Han.
The biggest challenge of exploring trees is patience. “You can try to relax before looking at a tree. This can help you connect with the tree more quickly. Touch the tree with your eyes closed and feel time go by,” suggested Han.

(2024·吉林·二模)Many teenagers want to learn how to manage money before going out into the world. The following is some advice.
Ask parents or neighbors if you can do chores to make pocket money. You may wash a car or send newspapers. You may help them water flowers or garden.
If you do different jobs, you may ask for different price. In this way, you can also improve your communication skills, which will help when you have a grown-up job, too.
Money can’t grow if it’s sitting inside a piggy bank. Put your money in the bank and you can get interest (利息). Save your money in the long run. One day you may feel surprised at how much money you have.
If you have a big event, such as a holiday coming up, it might mean you will need to spend more of your pocket money. Try making a plan for spending and saving. Write down how much money you have and what you are spending. Then it will help you take control of your money.
Figure out how much you can spend each month. Spend your money on what you truly need. Then try to cut down on spending. For example, rather than eating out, you can choose to cook at home.

The character, Hua Mulan, introduces Chinese culture to the world in Disney’s 1998 cartoon movie and its new live-action (真人拍摄的) movie in 2018. She becomes a world star.
In the movie, Mulan dresses herself as a boy and takes her father’s place to fight in the army. She wins the respect of the whole nation and turns into a great soldier.
According to Alex Xin, an art researcher at Peking University, Mulan in the western world has changed over the past twenty years, from a heroine in westerners’ eyes to an authentic (地道的) Chinese girl. “When you check the 1998 cartoon, Mulan was described as a fighter for women’s rights, but it missed the point, as the original (最初的) story was mainly about traditional family value. I’m glad that the new film has included this important point, showing that after twenty years. Westerners now have a better understanding of Chinese culture,” Alex Xin said.
As one of the oldest countries in the world, China has a long history and wonderful culture. Chinese culture is deep and difficult to understand for foreigners. But by introducing traditional Chinese culture in popular styles such as film, it is much easier for foreigners to understand China.

(2022·黑龙江齐齐哈尔·中考真题)Once there were four beggars (乞丐). One day, they met at an old temple
at night. They were very upset because none of them had much to eat.
“I only got this piece of meat today.” the first said. “I almost got nothing,” the second said, “I just picked up a potato outside the vegetable store during the day.” The third said that all he had was a small bottle of salt. The fourth beggar had not done much better, “I only got some old beans, but they aren’t very mice!”
As they sat around the fire, the beggar with only a bottle of salt had a great idea “Let’s put all our things together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it.” They all agreed. However, the first beggar thought, “I don’t want to share. I’ll just pretend to throw my meat into the pot. They’ll never know and I’ll eat my meat alone later.” So he pretended to put the meat into the pot. And at the same time the other beggars had similar ideas to him. At that time, the temple was too dark for the beggars to see what the others were doing.
Finally, one of them suggested that the dish should be ready and, in turn, each of them helped himself to it. They drank the hot water in silence, learning that selfishness (自私) doesn’t taste all that good.

March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit” still calls on Chinese people to do volunteer work.
The Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service is one of the volunteer groups that worked at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The 192 young volunteers worked for 66 days and offered more than 15,000 hours of service.
It is not an easy job to work as a volunteer. Liu Junyu, 28, from the team, found out the way to help people get in and out of the venue (场馆) more easily and safely. Other volunteers helped clear 50,000 m2 of ice and snow each day. This made sure that the games worked well.
Also, a volunteer needs to learn a lot. According to Jiang Meng, a 26-year-old volunteer from the Shougang Group, volunteers needed to know all about the venues. They also kept in mind the history and stories behind them to better show the beauty of Shougang and Beijing to guests.
“People say volunteering is about giving, but I’ve got a lot, too, through being a volunteer—the honor (光荣), as well as the growing personal skills,” said Jiang.

(2024·吉林长春·一模)Growing up in Saudi Arabia, 44-year-old photographer Jody MacDonald has always had a strong interest in the desert. “I have always wanted to spend some time in the Sahara,” MacDonald said. “There are still so many unexplored (未经探索的) areas in the Sahara Desert. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days that they interest me much, so finally I made the journey.” MacDonald started her journey in Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott, and headed inland where she and her team jumped on the world’s longest cargo train (货运列车) for a 435-mile journey on the Mauritania Railway. “The train was dirty and uncomfortable but it was such an interesting and unique way to travel through the vast desert by train,” said MacDonald.
MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travelers also had to deal with the heat and winds. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour,” MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up.”
She dealt with the harsh (恶劣的) conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather dictates (决定) when and where you travel,” said MacDonald. Even with all the challenges, the photographer managed to record amazing images of the beautiful but harsh landscapes of Mauritania, and its fascinating cultures and communities.

(2024·吉林长春·一模)My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unluckily, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I thought that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained often. So at first I didn’t pay more attention to this garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, I wanted to have some salad.” I panicked (恐慌) for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables.
When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty (愧疚的).
Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the store in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and I admitted, “Dad wanted a salad, so I went to the store.” She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. “Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”
Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.

Have you ever unlocked a Hello Bike Have you ever used Meituan to order a meal Have you ever enjoyed watching the short-form videos on Douyin Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.
Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.
Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn’t think Motorola’s product was good enough. He didn’t like AT&T’s idea of a car phone, either. The man wanted to give the world something new. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.
It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design (设计) the world’s first cell phone. The product was called DynaTAC. People could talk on it for 25 minutes before its battery (电池) died. The phone’s short battery life wasn’t a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why Well, the phone was too heavy (1, 100 grams) to hold in hand for too long!
On April 3, 1973, Cooper made the world’s first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, “I’m calling you on a cell phone. It’s a real, handheld cell phone.” On the other end of the line, there was only silence.
Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They’re much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress. But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. “I must keep learning all my life,” he says. “Or I’ll lose the ability to learn—that would be terrible!”

(2024·吉林·一模)Almost everyone, including you and me, gives and receives advice. No matter whether the advice is good or not, sometimes it can fall on deaf ears. However, some wise advice gives us directions and none of us should ignore (忽视). Let’s take a look.
108 By knowing who you are, you can make wise choices about what you want out of life. It makes you be wise about your goals, dreams and beliefs and to live life with purpose.
109 You will be a more interesting person if you are a lifelong learner. Reading can help you better understand something new and improve your attention span (专注力). So learn a new language, a new skill or even just take up a hobby.
110 When in doubt about something, say “Let me think about that.” You will have time to consider your ideas. You are also letting the person who asked know that you are carefully thinking it over.
111 If you want to know yourself better, compare yourself with who you were yesterday, not with anyone else.
112 Some people always think that they would be happy only if they had “something”. In fact, they will be certainly disappointed in the end. Happiness comes from your heart. And smiling more lowers stress and makes you appear more active.

When you are not sure about something, you don’t need to come to a conclusion at once but think it 115 carefully. Comparing yourself with 116 else is not a good choice. All you need to do is to compare yourself with who you were yesterday. You have to remember 117 comes from your heart. Nothing is more important than it.
(2024·吉林·一模)Growing old is something that happens to all of us. But many people often think older people are physically weak, helpless or unable to do anything meaningful. How do you feel about getting old I once chatted with my grandma, Solveig King, to find out her opinions.
Born in 1927, my grandma grew up in America during the Great Depression (大萧条) of the 1930s and World War Ⅱ. There were no outdoor lights and no running water. “But it was a very happy childhood: snow every winter and always sunshine in summer, enough food, but no luxuries (奢侈品),” she said. This explains where she got her habit of keeping old boxes and never wasting any food.
In 2015, I went to live with my grandma for a few months. We would sit together and read books, go to the swimming pool, watch some travel programs on TV, do some gardening and then do it all again the next day. It was quite fun!
Now 96 years old and in a wheelchair, Solveig can’t go swimming anymore, but she still keeps up with her other hobbies. “I don’t feel ‘old’, just a little disabled! But I never wish I could do something I know I can’t do.” And she keeps a curious and adventurous (冒险的) mind. “Soon, I’ll need to live at a nursing home for two weeks while my family is away. I’m excited because I’ll get to learn all about old people!” she said. How active she is! I seem to know that getting old is not close to the end of life but a process of finding the beauty of life.

124 Challenge yourself to think about the environment as you live your life. If you turn off lights when you leave the room and turn off your TV when you’re not watching it, you’ll save energy. If you take shorter showers, you’ll save water.
125 Shopping is fun, but buying things you don’t need is wasteful and bad for the earth. Before you buy something, ask yourself how much you’ll really use it. And it’s better for you to buy things that were locally made instead of those shipped from faraway.
126 Wear green trousers and T-shirts if you want. But what really matters isn’t the color. It’s how the clothes were made or what they are made of. If you want to help the environment, no matter where you shop, keep an eye out for products made from environmentally-friendly materials.
127 What’s better than learning about the environment Save it while you learn. It can be as simple as using both sides of a piece of paper, or reusing an old textbook instead of buying a new one. If you want to do more, join an environmental group or just encourage your friends to join.

138 The key to making changes is that you should find the strong wish within yourself—you will do it because you like it, not because of your parents, teachers or someone else.
139 “I’m going to recycle all my plastic bottles and magazines” is a much more feasible (可行的) goal than “I’m going to do more for the environment”, and it is easier to stick to.
140 It will probably take several months before a change turns into a habit. For example, you want to get up earlier to exercise than before. That’s because your brain needs some time to get used to the new idea.
141 Say out your goals loudly each morning. This can remind you of what you want and what you’re working for. Every time you remind yourself of your goals, you’re training yourself to stick to them.
142 Making mistakes is a part of the learning process. It may take a few tries to achieve your goals. It’s normal for you to give up a few times when you try to make a change. Remember that everyone makes mistakes. Just remind yourself to get back in the right direction.

(2024·吉林松原·一模)The earliest form of writing appeared about 5,500 years ago. In the past, hand writing was an important subject in school. Now, many students sometimes do homework on a computer and turn in their tasks online.
Many people think typing (打字) is quick and easy to read, while writing by hand may take longer than typing. But others say writing with a pen and paper is more valuable. Writing by hand has big advantages. Research shows that when we write down ideas with a pen or pencil, we make the brain active to help us learn, remember and think. Writing by hand lets people show their creativity. No two people have the same handwriting. Writing by hand can also help people concentrate. When using a computer, people can go online or play computer games easily.
Handwriting may be pretty. However, people can get their ideas and thoughts down more quickly when they type. Typing can also make it easier for people to change. Once something is written by hand, you can’t delete it. If you want to make a change, you have to write it all over again. What’s more, some people’s handwriting may be hard to read. Typing makes everything clear, and no one will have to worry about their words being clear enough.

(2024·吉林长春·一模)Bikes are usually one of the common choices for teenagers to get around. But imagine our favorite bike breaks halfway while we are cheerfully riding it to a friend’s house or school. How sad! Unlike the helpless situation we just imagined, a kid named Daniel had local police come to his help.
Daniel, a young teen from Texas, USA, was pushing his broken bike on the way home from school. Two police officers, Padula and Ludy, saw this young man on the road. They stopped their police car and made small talk with him. To their surprise, the officers found Daniel a “pleasure” to talk with. Impressed by this kid’s politeness, they decided to help him fix the broken bike. They also noticed that the bike was old and not in top condition.
A short while later, they fixed the bike for Daniel and watched him ride the bike off to his house. After the boy was gone, the officers started thinking it was not OK to leave it at that. So they decided to treat the polite kid with something more than fixing an old bike.
Another day, Padula and Ludy knocked on Daniel’s door. He and his parents seemed confused (困惑的) at first, but then the officers began the conversation by thanking the kind kid for the good talk they had that day. They told their “old friend” they had a surprise for him—a brand-new bike. Even before the officers asked Daniel whether he liked the bike, the kid rode it with a smile all the way.

This spring, the most eye-catching movie might be YOLO (《热辣滚烫》). By March 18, it had made around 3.5 billion yuan at the box office, reported Paper.
Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (拳击). The name of YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea— you only live once.
Jia Ling has tried many different roles in her life, including crosstalk (相声) and sketch (小品) performer, variety show (综艺节目) guest and actress. The movie Hi, Mom (《你好,李焕英》) in 2019 is the first one Jia directed in her life.
Jia didn’t study directing at university. It makes her feel freer in film making because she doesn’t need to follow a fixed style. To everyone’s surprise, Hi, Mom made her the world’s highest-grossing (票房最高的) woman director before 2023.
Before making YOLO, Jia was often seen as an overweight comedian (喜剧演员). She often made jokes about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost more than 50 kg which made it hard to imagine that this is the same Jia we once knew. Some people online said even her voice became softer, and they called this a “rebirth” for Jia. She has proved through her actions that if you want to be successful, you need to try your best.
In Jia’s eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of saying true to herself. “It’s hard to predict one’s life. I’m just following my heart but not looking for changes in purpose. Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my energy into them.” Jia told Xinhua.
“In fact, Jia didn’t change. She’s just being more herself. She shows us through her actions.” said talk show host Chen Luyu.

Podareva had colorful experiences in China. She won prizes in many Chinese poetry writing competitions and published (出版) her own Chinese poetry collections. Her most unusual memory was that one of her Chinese poems was turned into a song.
“Some people may praise China in a direct way, but I prefer to express my feelings about the country and describe the friendship between China and Russia through different styles of poems,” Podareva said.
Podareva always wanted to be a cultural ambassador (使者) between the two countries. In 2020, she began to make videos and shared them online. Besides sharing Chinese poems she had written, Podareva also produced videos about cultural differences between China and Russia. Sometimes she made humorous videos to explain the misunderstandings that Chinese people have towards Russians.
Podareva was not only good at writing poems but also good at painting. She didn’t think the two art forms were different from each other. “Wang Wei was a famous Chinese poet, and he was also a painter,” she said. In December 2022, Podareva showed 66 of her paintings in Shanghai.
Podareva thought all art was a way for the creators to express their spirit. To make the friendship between China and Russia deeper, she decided to create a website in Russia and introduce China—through her poetry and paintings—to Russian.

He knew that currents (水流) in the middle of the river were faster and that they would help him win. However, their mother had told them never to swim in the middle of a river. Quack thought about it for a few seconds, but he finally decided to try it. “I’m old enough now to swim there,” he thought. Quick also knew about the currents. But he always followed his mother’s words. And he followed his mother’s words this time, too.
It didn’t take Quack much time to be the faster one. However, as he went on, the currents in the middle of the river became stronger and stronger. Suddenly, Quack was caught by a big whirlpool (漩涡). He was not strong enough to escape from it.
Fortunately, a cow passed by and saved him. After that, Quack realized that his mother’s words were good, even though sometimes he didn’t want to listen to them. And he decided to follow his mother’s words from then on.

My name is Lisa, a well-known pianist. My first performance was still clear in my mind, though it happened so long ago.
That night, my piano performance was the most important thing in my family. To see my performance, my grandparents would come by plane. My aunt Dianne, a successful news reporter, would come as well, though she was quite busy with her TV news every night.
Unluckily, I got very nervous before I performed. What was worse, the more I practiced, the more nervous I was. It seemed very difficult for me to win any prize. When it was my turn, I sat down at the piano in my beautiful dress and started to play. To my disappointment (失望), I made a mistake and then another. It seemed that it took me years to finish my performance. I ran off the stage with tears in my eyes. I felt surprised when I saw people stand up and cheer for me. My mom and dad had flowers for me and they all said congratulations to me. But what I wanted to do was to go back home and cry. When we were back home, I locked myself in my bedroom. I couldn’t believe how I could make such silly mistakes after so many years of hard work. Then I heard someone knocking at the door. It was my aunt. She came in and sat by me.
“I still remember my first show on TV.” she said. “I had practiced a thousand times, but I forgot to mention the name of the news and you may not believe I even pronounced (发音) my own name wrongly. Don’t be too hard on yourself. No one can avoid (避免) making mistakes. The key is to face it bravely and learn from it.” Her words made me think a lot.
My aunt is right. We shouldn’t be afraid of mistakes. If we can learn from them, they can make us better.
