Unit 5 Amazing things任务型阅读(含解析)牛津译林版 七年级下册英语题型专项集训
Why do people cry Scientists say the body produces(产生)tears(眼泪)because it needs them. One kind of tears is for the eye, and the other is for the heart. They both work as cleaners. If something else like dust(灰尘)gets into your eye, tears also come into the eye to clean it out. If you are hurt by something, your strong feelings produce some poisonous chemicals(毒素)in your body, and at the same time, tears come out with them. If tears don’t help clean out these poisonous chemicals, they will do harm to the heart.
In the United States, men have heart problems more often than women do. Doctors say heart problems have something to do with the pressure(压力)of living and working now. Perhaps men have more of these illnesses because they do not cry enough. They need to cry more.
In fact, you can find many ways of reducing(减少)the pressure to keep fit. Crying is a natural(自然的)and physical(身体的)one.

What does a cake look like Maybe you’ve got lots of different answers in mind, but Zhou Yi and his team’s cakes will certainly make you feel amazed!
Zhou is called China’s “Sugar King”. Last November in the UK, he and his team won three gold medals and two bronze medals(铜牌)at the International Cake Competition, the world’s largest cake competition.
Zhou and his team’s cakes show not only their great cake-making skills, but also traditional Chinese culture and art. For example, one of the gold medal-winning cakes shows China’s first and only female(女性的)emperor Wu Zetian as a young woman. Someone said that the cake showed the beauty of Chinese art to the world.
But don’t think creating such amazing works of art is very easy. “Some parts were made eight times just because the result was not quite what I wanted,” Zhou said. “You need to build every single part over and over again until you find the perfect fit.”
He hopes to let more people know more about China through him.

Yesterday I visited a museum. There I learn about a lot of amazing facts about man and animals. What interested me most were a talk and some stories about animals.
Do you know how much TV you watch in your life In yesterday’s talk, the scientist said that a man watched TV for over 70,000 hours in his life. It means you sit in front of a TV for 8 years. Do you know how long your hair can be if you don’t cut it The scientist said that it could be as long as 9 metres! Another amazing thing was that you said about 4,200 words a day. That means more than 100 million in your life!
I didn’t like camels before. I thought they were dirty and slow. But now I know they have some amazing abilities (能力). Camels can run over 15 metres per second (秒). And it’s amazing that they can keep walking for days without any food or drinks. Camels can help people in many ways. They can carry things for people.
In the past, I disliked some animals and thought they were dirty and lazy. But now, I find them interesting. Man should be kind to them. It will be great to study animals and do something for them. Let’s work hard to make the world a better place for both man and animals.

If you think you are too shy and want to be a little bit braver, just try the following things: Be open to others. Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide (掩盖) it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more comfortable in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk with. Remember that other people have feelings too, and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start a conversation, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person
Get your attention elsewhere. Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not. You will become relaxed and find it’s not so hard to talk with others.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi!” or smile at someone, say to yourself “I can make it.” Keep trying and one day you’ll never feel shy when you talk to others.

World Sleep Day, on 21st March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world don’t realize it’s very important. As a result, sleep problems are quite common.
In 2011, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Among the people, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, 31.6 percent were diagnosed (诊断) with insomnia (失眠). In addition, 30.7 percent of them have visited doctors for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.
The survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some even can’t fall asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night. The main reasons of the problems are pressures (压力) from school or work and a fast pace (节奏) of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also affect sleep and cause poor quality sleep. The survey also found that large numbers of people find it hard to sleep at night. The short term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating (专心). If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

Tom is a TV reporter. An amazing thing happened to Tom yesterday evening. He was walking alone on his way home when he saw bright light in the sky. Then a spacecraft (航天器) showed up. At first he thought it was orange and white, and it was coming closer and closer. Then it stopped a few metres above the ground. He saw two people inside. They had big ears and small eyes, but no hair. Tom thought they were aliens. He had camera with him then, but he was too scared to take a photo. Then he began to feel weak and fell to the ground. An hour later’he woke up. He found himself lying on the grass in front of his house. He couldn’t explain how he got there. Of course he told his friends about this strange experience. There are many things in the world that we don’t understand, and know little about. In 1832, an explorer traveled to the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山脉). The people there told him stories about a strange animal called yeti (雪人). “It lived in the snow,” they said. It was very tall, and much bigger than a man. The explorer didn’t believe the stories. “These people have probably seen a big monkey,” he thought.
But the stories about the yeti continued. A lot of explorers went to the Himalayas. They wanted to find the yeti. Some of the climbers told stories about a strange animal in the snow, but nobody could prove (证实) they had seen it.
In 1925, a photographer named Tombazi said he saw a yeti when he was climbing. It was about 300 metres away from him. He was with some other people, and they saw the yeti, too. Tombazi tried to take a picture, but the yeti was gone! Tombazi went to look at the snow and he found footprints. They were huge!
The best clue about the yeti comes from a scientist called Gene Poirier. He traveled to Himalayas and collected pieces of hair. When people examined the hair, they found something amazing. The hair did not come from any normal animal. Maybe it’s the first real proof (证据) of the yeti!

For a long time, scientists didn’t study animal thinking.
Most of them didn’t believe that animals could think. They thought humans were the only thinking animals.
Now more scientists are studying this subject. But it’s very hard to prove things that no one can see or measure. So some scientists decided to take a look at brains.
Is bigger brain better No. Cow brains are bigger than dog brains, but that doesn’t make cows smarter than dogs. And squirrels (松鼠) have some of the biggest brains of all for their body size. But squirrels aren’t even close to being the smartest animals in the world. So the size of a brain may give some clues (线索) about brain power, but it doesn’t prove anything.
Other scientists study thinking by watching how animals solve problems, who watch animals in the wild or set up thinking tests in a lab. For example, a scientist might put some food just out of an animal’s reach. One kind of animal may grab (夺取) a stick and use it to slide the food over. Another kind might not be able to figure out a way to get the food. Some scientists think animals that have lots of problems to solve must be smarter than animals with simple lives. Scientists also study certain kinds of behaviour for clues about thinking. They watch for three things: whether animals use tools, how they act with each other, and how they communicate.
68.For the body size, do dogs have smaller brains than squirrels
69.What have scientists learnt from taking a look at the size of animals’ brains
70.How do other scientists study animal thinking
71.What are some certain kinds of behaviour for clues about thinking that scientists study
