“We make a plan for walking dogs at the beginning of each term, but there are always changes, so we’ll call for help in our WeChat group,”said Xie Yifan, a member of the club. “It seems that this year more students have joined the club, so stray dogs have become ‘rare’ (稀有的).”
The animal protection club was started in 2004. Stray dogs and stray cats were once a problem at the university. The dogs chose to live at the university because of the large green spaces and friendly students there, but they caused safety problems for people. “Taking care of these stray dogs and cats isn’t very easy,” Xie said. The work of the club members includes cleaning the kennel, bathing the dogs, and taking them to animal hospitals to have a health examination. The cost comes from the club’s activity fund and income (收入) from selling creative products.
Instead of keeping them in the kennel, the club members hope the stray dogs can be adopted (收养). They hope to find forever homes for them.

People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people’s minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms (习语). An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather”, they are saying that they’re not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers” tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstanding and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand, if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:
It makes my blood boil when people litter.
The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.
In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we meet idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

Feng Boyao and Meng Shuqi found that their city library didn’t have enough Braille books (盲文书籍) for blind people and many of the Braille books were outdated. So, they teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem. Feng and Meng both studied at No 37 Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. They invented a new kind of Braille reader. “We make a plan for walking dogs at the beginning of each term, but there are always changes, so we’ll call for help in our WeChat group,”said Xie Yifan, a member of the club. “It seems that this year more students have joined the club, so stray dogs have become ‘rare’ (稀有的).”

【答案】例文
There’s no doubt that growth is impossible without changes. I’ve undergone a significant change in my personality, transforming from a shy individual to a more outgoing one. Initially, I was hesitant to engage in social activities and often found myself avoiding group conversations. However, over time, I’ve become more willing to step out of my comfort zone and embrace new experiences. This transformation has taught me the importance of adapting to change. I’ve learned that growth often involves leaving behind what is familiar and stepping into the unknown. Embracing change has allowed me to discover new interests and talents, such as playing sports and reading, which have enriched my life.
In conclusion, by embracing change, we can unlock new potential and achieve greater things in life.
