How to get off a bus
If you want to get off the bus, you have to press the bell. If it’s silent, that probably means someone has pressed it. Just look for a “stopping” sign by one of the doors.
Good and bad manners on the bus
Standing up—For safety reasons you’re not allowed to stand on the stairs.
Talking to the person next to you—There’s nothing wrong with starting a conversation with someone but the British aren’t quite comfortable doing so.
Asking the driver where to get off—It’s okay to ask the driver a question when you get on, but do not do so while the bus is moving.
Getting off the bus—You should leave by the middle or back doors. Some drivers can be angry when you leave by the front door because it is only for people to get on.
Thanking the driver—Drivers don’t expect it, but passengers can shout out a quick thank you when they get off. Or you can just raise your hand as you get off because they’ll be watching you in the mirror.

Songbirds are the birds with a beautiful voice. Different kinds of songbirds wake up at different times in the morning and begin to sing. This is because they have different waking clocks, according to the brightness of the sunlight.
We mostly hear bird concerts between spring and summer. This is the time when birds are looking for partners. Studies have shown that songs play an important role in attracting possible partners and may even show the health of the singer. Even after they have found a partner, male (雄性的) birds continue to sing, because it’s a way of showing their babies how to sing.
Although baby birds know the songs they will sing as adults, true songbirds have to learn how to sing properly. Nestlings begin learning their songs by listening to adults around them. They go through several
stages of learning, just like humans learning language. First, they practise voices and sounds, which is like the early stage in human language development. Then, during the second stage, the birds practise their songs for eight to nine months. The singing is improved a lot during the final stage with the help of their teachers.
Like humans, members of each kind of songbirds have their own dialects (方言). These are learnt from their parents when the birds are children.

“You are just like your mother.” This phrase is often said by many. As we grow older, we may notice that we’re getting more like our mother. Yet surprisingly, new research has found that most people are more similar to their father.
A team of scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US found that we get equal amounts of genes (基因) from mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we get from our father.
The study helps us to explain who we are to a certain degree. And more importantly, it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop diseases. For example, if we get the gene for a disease from our mother, it may not be as strong as if we had got it from our father.
We know that there are 95 genes influenced by our parents, said lead researcher Professor Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena. These are called imprinted genes (印记基因). But now, the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.
For the study, the scientists picked out three different kinds of mice with different genes. The mice then gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team then measured every single gene of their DNA.
They found an imbalance that turned toward their father. Villena also said that the recent study was the first to show that mammals (哺乳动物) are more similar to their fathers than mothers. “This is an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to a completely new area of exploration in human genetics,” he said.

C.We are supposed to be stronger than our parents.
D.We don’t get the gene of a disease from our mother.
( )58.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to

On a school day, 60 students at Xishan Primary School were learning how to make corn soup in an after-school cooking class. Working in groups of four or five, the little cooks took their responsibilities very seriously. Soon, they were showing off their own delicious dishes.
Recently, many schools have set up after-school classes for students. It comes after the “double reduction (双减)” policy. The policy is to alleviate the stress from homework for students. A broken heart. A sad ending to something. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it’s part of life. But no question, this experience can be devastating. Many people may find it difficult to get it over. But research shows listening to sad music is a good way to help you go through the sadness.
Sad music can help cheer you up from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found listening to sad music can trigger your emotions (激发情感). It draws you away from focus on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.
Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” raised their spirits. In fact, it did so when the person was first consciously (有意识地) aware of the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. When people wished that the sad music might help, they found it did.
These findings link with other studies that show accepting your full experience gives you hope. For example, a research from Cornell University found that embracing (拥抱) difficulties about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, helps you to pass through it.

Cardiac arrest (心脏骤停) happens when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping blood. 90% of the people who have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital die—often within minutes. That is because they do not receive treatment quickly enough to survive. Cardiac arrest is a common cause of death. It causes about 300,000 to 450,000 deaths in the United States each year.
If cardiac arrest happens, rapid treatment with a medical device called automated external defibrillator (AED) can be lifesaving. Many AEDs can be easily seen in public places, including offices, schools, shopping malls, grocery stores, and airports. An AED system includes an AED and its necessary accessories (配件), such as a battery and pad electrodes (片状电极). The AED gives verbal instructions to users, which means it gives voice instructions to tell users how to use it.
This is how an AED works. First, the user turns on the AED and follows the recorded voice instructions. Second, the user puts two electrodes on the chest of the person in cardiac arrest. Third, the electrodes send information about the person’s heart rhythm (心律) to the AED, and then it decides whether an electric shock (电击) is needed. Fourth, if a shock is needed, the AED tells the user when to press a button to give a shock. In some AEDs, the user doesn’t need to press any button. The AEDs will give a shock themself.
( )96.Why do so many people in cardiac arrest outside a hospital die
A.Because 90% of them lose too much blood. B.Because they can’t get treatment fast enough.
C.Because they don’t know how to use an AED. D.Because no one use an AED to save their lives.
( )97.Where can we most probably NOT see an AED
A.Schools. B.Airports. C.Taxis. D.Offices.
( )98.What does the underlined word “verbal” mean
A.Written. B.Easy. C.Difficult. D.Spoken.
( )99.Who decides whether an electric shock is needed

How was your sleep last night Let’s check out some sleep habits that may accidentally be harmful to your health.
“Jump scares from alarms”
A young woman recently shared online that she felt uncomfortable after her loud alarm woke her up. It was because the blood supply to part of her brain was shortly prevented, according to her health examination.
“The body changes during sleep, making people vulnerable in the early morning,” Chris from the Edinburgh Sleep Center told Daily Mail. During the later part of the night, the nervous system is less active and most of the body activities slow down. When a sudden noise appears, blood pressure, heart rate and breathing will react more quickly.
Waking up suddenly by an alarm is not a good habit, but it’s difficult for most people to wake up by themselves naturally. A softer alarm may be helpful, giving the body some time to adjust. Another way is to leave the curtains half open before sleep—the sunshine in the morning can slowly wake you up.
“Sleep late, get up late”
Although the 8-hour golden rule of sleeping is valuable, some young people may go to bed late and then
get up late, such as sleeping from 2 am to 10 am. However, this can be problematic since human bodies can tell the time.
An expert said that waking up late the next day could also lead to sleep inertia (惯性), which is a state between sleep and waking. This is why, after oversleeping, people may feel even more tired.
If this habit is serious enough to influence a person’s study, work and other aspects (方面) of life, it may turn into a special illness. Special treatments have already been developed to treat the illness, such as using light to gradually change one’s sleeping habit.

A.After she shared online. B.After her loud alarm woke her up.
C.After she had a medical examination. D.After a sudden noise appeared.

How To Take London BusesHow to pay for a bus ride
It’s not possible to pay with cash and the driver doesn’t sell tickets, so you need to take a travel card with you before you get on.

They go through several stages of learning, just like humans learning language.

The policy lists requirements such as cutting down the amount and reducing the degree of difficulty of homework, as well as
improving education and after-school services. For example, homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. It allows students to have more free time to take up their hobbies and interests.
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy exercise books anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.” According to Shen, teachers have taught at a slow speed, which gives students enough time to think about new information.
The Ministry of Education (教育部) reported on the progress made through the policy so far. Almost all primary and middle schools now offer two-hour after-school services on weekdays. More than 90% of students can finish their written homework in the set time. About 92.7% of schools have offered after-school art and sports classes.

Is there a connection between volunteering and health Could volunteering offer a way to improve kids’ mental (心理的) health
According to a new study, kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might be helping themselves as well. Scientists found that volunteering in schools or communities is connected with better health among children and teens.
The study compared kids who took part in community service with those who didn’t. Kids who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered “flourishing”, or doing well. And kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety (焦虑).
Parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17 took a survey. The findings of the survey show that volunteering has a positive effect to raise higher levels of happiness, life-satisfaction, a sense of control over life and mental health.
The study comes at an important time. In another report, more than 40% of high school students said that they had ever felt sad or hopeless. Therefore, there’s a clear need to improve students’ mental health. Giving back to the community may be one method. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And it makes them feel connected to those around them. So, kids, give it a try, for your health and happiness.

Do you ofen keep chocolate nearby and feel weak or sleepy without it If so, you may have a problem that millions of others have: sugar addiction (瘾). Addiction means using something or doing an activity over and over again, although it has bad effects. Playing computer games, drinking and eating are examples of activities that can develop into addictions.
Sugar addiction has four stages. In the first stage, you strongly want something sweet because sugar makes your body produce dopamine (多巴胺), which gives you happy feelings. In the second stage, even after eating sugar, you still want more because your body gets less sensitive to sugar’s effects. In the third stage, if you don’t get sugar, you will have headaches and feel tired. Finally, in the fourth stage, you start to have the worst experience of sugar addiction like unhealthy weight and sadness.
Breaking a sugar addiction can be challenging, but it is important for your health. There are a few things to keep in mind. It’s simple advice you probably have heard before. My name is Black Beauty. I’m a good horse who doesn’t kick or bite people. One day, my owners Squire Gordon and John drove me to go on a long journey. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
We arrived in the town early, but Squire’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was blowing, making a terrible sound.
Suddenly we heard a crack, and a huge tree fell across the road in front of us. I stopped still (静止). I was shaking with fear, but I did not turn round or run away.

( )91.What does the underlined word “devastating” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Painful. B.Shameful. C.Hopeful. D.Cheerful.
( )92.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3

How was your sleep last night Let’s check out some sleep habits that may accidentally be harmful to your health.
“Jump scares from alarms”
A young woman recently shared online that she felt uncomfortable after her loud alarm woke her up. It
was because the blood supply to part of her brain was shortly prevented, according to her health examination.
Although the 8-hour golden rule of sleeping is valuable, some young people may go to bed late and then get up late, such as sleeping from 2 am to 10 am.
( )101.When did the young woman find the blood supply to part of her brain shortly prevented
A.After she shared online. B.After her loud alarm woke her up.
C.After she had a medical examination. D.After a sudden noise appeared.
( )102.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” mean
A.Easily hurt. B.Suddenly woken. C.Feel sick. D.Sleep late.
( )103.What does the writer really want to tell us about “Jump scares from alarms”
A.Waking up suddenly by an alarm is harmful to health.
B.When the alarm rings, we must pay attention to blood pressure.
C.It’s not easy for us to wake up naturally.
D.Leaving the curtains half open before sleep can slowly wake us up.
( )104.What does the writer really want to tell us about “Sleep late, get up late”
A.The 8-hour golden rule of sleeping is valuable.
B.Waking up late the next day could also lead to sleep inertia.

The World is in Danger
Our world is in danger. We must do something to protect the environment. But, what are the main problems we face
The greenhouse effect
The atmosphere (大气层) around the Earth is necessary for all living things. It is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and keeping heat from getting out. Without it, the Earth would be the same as the Moon—cold and lifeless.
When we burn fuels (燃料) such as petrol and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2). Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere, and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to rise, and in the future may cause cities to disappear.
Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy nature by cutting down many forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO2 and produce oxygen (O2). Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of animals that live in forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be easily destroyed by train. This can result in floods and even more damage to the environment.
Bad habits
Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as litter. To protect the environment, we need to take proper action. We should be different from many consumers and become “green consumers”. This means that we should only buy and use products friendly to the environment. We should also recycle as many things as we can. We can reuse things
for the same purpose as before, or we can use them for new purposes. Then, we can make a difference.
( )106.Why the atmosphere around the Earth is necessary for all living things
A.Because it is like a greenhouse.
B.Because it lets sunlight in and keeps heat from getting out.
C.Because with it the Earth is cold and lifeless.
D.Because the Moon is cold and lifeless.
( )107.Which of the following is not the result of the greenhouse effect
A.The atmosphere keeps in too much heat. B.The Earth’s temperature will rise.
C.The sea level will increase. D.Many seaside cities may disappear.
( )108.What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A.Trees take in CO2 and produce oxygen.
B.The surface of the soil is easily destroyed by rain every year.
C.Cutting down a great many forests destroys nature.
D.The homes of animals are in our forests.
( )109.What does the underlined phrase “green consumers” mean
A.People who sell products friendly to the environment.
B.People who buy products nice to the environment.
C.People who recycle as many things as they can.
D.People who make friends with green consumers.
( )110.What is the main purpose of this passage
A.To teach us why and how to protect the environment.
B.To inspire us how to make a difference.
C.To encourage us to live in new and different ways in the future.
D.To tell us what to do in the future.
