Before the school picnic, parents always packed picnic baskets for the kids. They filled them with a lot of good food.
There was a poor family. They had no picnic lunch that year. When my mom noticed this, she tried to help them.
Just then, the teacher said there was going to be one final race before lunch. It was the sack race, in which two people got inside a sack and hopped (双脚跳) as fast as they could to the finish line. The winner would receive a special lunch basket.
My mom wanted to enter this race. She waited until she saw Mary, the eldest sister of the poor family, stand
up. She asked Mary if she could be her partner, and Mary agreed. My mom went out of her way to make Mary win. Later, Mary came and thanked my mom for being her partner. She said that her brothers and sisters really enjoyed the picnic lunch. For Mom, it was the best school picnic in the whole world.

The Science of You
You already know that you are an amazing person, but it’s not just your wonderful personality. Your body itself is an unusual machine.
Lots of information has been written on the subject of “you”. You might wonder about your body. Most people think that the big picture of how your body systems work together is important to understand. Sometimes the details interest us the most. Let’s go on the way to get a haircut.
Why don’t haircuts hurt Snip, snip—the scissors fly around your head. Your hair grows from living cells, but the hair that’s cut is not alive. What’s the story here
Each hair on your head grows from a root that is under your skin. The root produces hair cells in a special tube called a follicle (毛囊). When new hair cells are made at the root, they push older hair cells up the follicle.
As older hair cells move toward the surface of your skin, they change. They join together and harden. Then they die. The strand (股) of hair that comes out of your head does not have living cells in it. That’s why a haircut doesn’t hurt!
You probably have about 100, 000 hairs on your head right now. Hair strands grow all the time, then fall out and start to grow again. It usually does this in different stages. That’s why you don’t lose all of your hair at once.
In fact, your hair is just a part of all those interesting things of your body. You might be wide-eyed and staring at one of these creations. If you want to know more about them, keep reading.
27.What do most people think is important to understand

Following the crowd (随大流) may not always be in a person’s best interest. However, a new study shows that teens who go along with their friends may become healthier as adults. Scientists have known that close friendships help improve health. People who do their own thing may experience unpleasant feelings and get sick. Those findings inspired Joseph Allen, a scientist, to look at teen behavior. Allen’s group noticed that experiences during teen years might influence adult health.
Scientists interviewed 171 teens every year for five years starting at the age of 13. These teens became the focal (焦点的) teens in the study. They asked the focal teens about both positive and negative questions of friendship. The scientists also spoke to their closest friends. They asked the friends how likely the focal person was to follow the crowd, go along with the friends or keep on doing his or her own thing.
They interviewed the same 171 people again when they grew up, at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person’s overall health. The scientists found a correlation (相互关系) between a teen’s behavior and adult health. Firstly, teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Secondly, teens
who held back (抑制) their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults than those who shared feelings with a close friend. What’s more, the study found that teens who went along with what their friends wanted, instead of being independent, also were healthier in their twenties.
The correlation held up (依然成立) even after the scientists included other possible influences on health, such as weight, family income and drug use. Study showed that such other things did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did. For those who wonder whether they should follow the crowd or not, now they have a legitimate (合理的) reason to say yes!
30.Scientists asked the focal teens ________.
A.if they experienced unpleasant feelings
B.if they always agreed with their friends
C.about the things they kept on doing on their own
D.about the positive and negative questions of friendship
31.What can we learn from the study

An idol is someone who we respect or love. However, unlike many of my classmates, my idol is not a film star, a famous writer or a sportsman. He is neither a world leader nor an important person from history. My idol is
my dad.
Most people believe that a man should go out and work. However, when I was only a five-year-old boy, I was seriously ill and needed attention all the time. My mother and father both worked and my grandparents lived far away. This was a big problem. My dad knew how much my mum loved her job, so he stopped working to stay at home and look after me. Many men in this situation would want their wives to stay with the child, but my dad always thinks about others before himself. This made me start to respect him.
My dad later took a job and worked at night. He chose the job so that he would only be out of the house when I was sleeping. Since then, my dad has helped and supported me in everything I do. I remember when I was learning to ride a bike. My dad ran behind me and held the back of the bicycle so that I would not fall. I felt so safe because I knew he was near. I did not notice when he stopped holding me. Soon, I was able to ride by myself.
My family is not rich, and we do not own a big house or an expensive car. My dad has showed me that something is more important than money. My dad gives me his time. Although he now works hard every day and is often very busy, he always makes time to stay with me. He helps me with my homework, and plays games with me at weekends. We make and fly our own kites, go for walks in the countryside, and even cook together. He taught me that I can achieve anything if I really work hard on it.
My dad is my idol because he showed me the most important things in life.
