It's common knowledge that spiders use their webs( 网 )to catch insects. However, some spiders have developed other uses for their webs. One such spider is the European water spider, which uses its web to breathe underwater.
The European water spider spends most of its life underwater. It gives birth to a baby, cares for its young, and feeds on insects underwater. Since it needs to breathe, the spider carefully keeps the air inside its web. This is what allows it to stay underwater for a long time.
The web is like a balloon with a hole in the bottom(底部). This “balloon” keeps the air inside and allows the spider to get in and out through the bottom to catch nearby insects. In fact, the water spider's web works much the same as a diving bell, an early kind of submarine(潜水艇) . Diving bells were large bells supplied with air from a hose(软管) running to the water's surface. The air kept the water from filling up the bell, and people could go in and out through the open bottom. Because of this quality, water spiders are sometimes known as “diving bell spiders”.
Although the web allows the water spider to stay underwater for a long time, some trips to the surface are necessary. When the web needs more fresh air, the spider pushes the web and lets the old air go out. Then, it swims to the surface to collect small fresh air bubbles(气泡)and keeps them in the hairs on its stomach and legs. Finally, it goes back down to fill the web again.

Starting from 2020, Chinese has become a course for high school students in Ireland. It has also become an exam subject of Ireland’s Leaving Certificate(证书)Examinations, the Irish version(版本)of Gaokao, since 2022. About 100 students took the exam of Chinese last year.
In 2017, Ireland carried out a ten-year plan. The plan included the goal of increasing the number of students studying foreign languages like Chinese. By 2021, all high school students in the country must study a foreign language. This move could help prepare for the increasing importance of non-English speaking countries.
This is not the first time Chinese has been considered as a language needed to be tested at school. Back in March 2017, Chinese became a graduation exam subject at an Italian high school, Sophie School, and 145 of its 910 students chose to study the language. By now, the Chinese course has been taught at the Italian school for years. Maria Silva Boccardi, director of the school, says Chinese is becoming a global language and they set up the course because many students asked for it.
There were only a few schools that provided Chinese courses and exams in the past. But now, Chinese courses have become an important part of teaching plans in many Western countries. This also encourages many Chinese young people to go to Western schools and colleges to teach Chinese and spread Chinese culture.
