Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals (信号). Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks(轨道). The color red was used to mean "stop" because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red "stop" light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean "take care" and a white light meant "go".
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant "go". So the signals were swapped. The "go" light was changed to green and the "take care" light was changed to white.
During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.
Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.

At last the girls got Anne to play the Lily Girl. As big girls of thirteen, going on fourteen, the girls had learned the poem the winter before and would try something romantic. It was Anne’s idea to play Elaine, the Lily Girl. They’d set a boat off carrying Elaine and let it float to the lower land. The other girls had no courage to float down alone and they’d never be dead enough. “Well, I’ll be Elaine,” Anne was persuaded (说服) not to mind her hair and she lay down, with closed eyes and a flower in her hands.
The boat was pushed off. The girls headed for the bridge, through the woods, and down to the place, where they were to receive the Lily Girl. Anne enjoyed the romance at first. Then something not romantic at all happened—the boat began to leak and the water was pouring in. It did not take her long to realize that the boat would go down soon. Anne couldn’t swim. She was so frightened.
Just then the boat bumped into a pile and Anne managed to climb up, to a place with no way of getting up or down. The boat sank. The girls saw it disappear. With no doubt they thought Anne went down with it, and they screamed and ran off for help. Anne was still hanging on there. Minutes passed by, each seeming an hour to her. Just as she couldn’t hold on any more, Gilbert Blythe came in a boat!
“How on earth did you get there ” Without waiting for an answer he pulled close, held out his hand and helped her down. Anne explained what happened, trying not to look at him. Gilbert took Anne to the land. Anne thanked him and turned away.
But Gilbert also jumped from the boat and asked, “Can’t we be friends I’m sorry I made fun of your hair...” Hearing this, Anne’s heart gave a quick little beat. But that scene of two years before came back as if it happened yesterday. Gilbert called her carrots! She’d never forgive him!
“No,” she said coldly, “I shall never be friends with you, Gilbert Blythe. I don’t want to be!”
“All right, then!” Gilbert jumped back into his boat, “I’ll never ask you to be my friends again, Anne Shirley.”
Anne held her head very high, but she had a strange feeling after Gilbert left. She would rather sit down and have a good cry.

When night comes, they stop under a big tree. The Tin Woodman cuts some wood and makes a fire for Dorothy. Dorothy and Toto eat some bread and the Lion goes into the forest to find something for his dinner. The Scarecrow collects some nuts for Dorothy’s breakfast. Then all of them lie down and sleep until morning.
The next day they set off again very early. They walk a few miles and then come to a big ditch(沟渠). It’s very wide and very deep. There are a lot of sharp rocks at the bottom of it.
“How can we cross the ditch ” Dorothy asks her friends.
“We can’t fly over it,” the Scarecrow says. “And we can’t jump over it. So we must stay here. ”
The Lion looks at the ditch and says, “I can jump over it.”
“Can you ” the Scarecrow says. “That’s good. You can take us across on your back, one by one.”
“Who wants to go first ” the Lion says.
“Me!” the Scarecrow says and he gets on the Lion’s back. The Lion jumps across the ditch easily. Then he jumps back and takes Dorothy and Toto. Finally he takes the Tin Woodman across the ditch.
Later in the afternoon, they come to a wide river.
“How can we cross the river ” Dorothy asks.
“Easy!” the Scarecrow replies. “The Tin Woodman can cut down some trees and build a raft. We can cross the river on that.”
“That’s a good idea,” the Lion says to the Scarecrow, “One would believe you had brains in your head, instead of straw!”
But it takes time to make a raft, and it’s very late when the Tin Woodman finishes it. So they find a cozy place under the trees where they sleep well until the morning. That night, Dorothy dreams of flying to the Emerald City and finding the good Wizard Oz, who would soon send her back to Kansas.
