The school spelldown was held the next week.I won again! The citywide spelling competition was one month later.
Over the weekend, Ms Pettis picked me up. We went to her home, where she helped me practise the spelling of difficult words. We practised every weekend until the citywide competition began.

It is because of small things called “genes(基因)” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell (细胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map,but we do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means,we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we will use it in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive(有吸引力的), or stop sick people getting jobs.

Passage 1(2023昆明改编)
According to UNESCO, a large number of children in villages in some African countries like Kenya and Tanzania do not go to school. They have to work to make money for their family. And more than half of people in these countries live without electricity.
A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a special solar (太阳的) power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called “Solar Cow”. The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their children to school by setting up Solar Cows at schools.
Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries (给电池充电) called “Solar Milks”. The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.
The batteries can only be charged using the Solar Cow, so children have to go to school to get the electricity. Every day, children put their batteries into the bottom of their school's Solar Cow.They go to class while the batteries are being charged. At the end of the day, they take the charged batteries home.

Passage 2(2023河西区二模)
Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets For years, scientists said “no,” or “we don't know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人; 生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are more than 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has more than 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

Passage 4(2023扬州改编)
Is it possible to have a diet(日常饮食) that's both healthy and friendly to our planet Here are answers to your eco friendly food questions.
Does what I eat influence climate(气候) change
Yes.The world's food system is responsible for (为……负责) about one quarter of the planet warming green house gases that humans produce each year. That includes raising and harvesting all the plants, animals, and animal products we eat, as well as sending food to markets all over the world.
Which foods have the largest influence
In general, beef and lamb have the biggest climate foot print per gram of protein(蛋白质) while plant based foods like beans, rice, corn and wheat have the smallest influence. Meat, chicken and eggs are somewhere in the middle.
Is there a simple food choice I can make
Studies have shown that people who eat a meat heavy diet can reduce their food related footprint by one third or more by moving to a vegan(素食的) diet—no meat, dairy(乳制品), or eggs. If you don't want to go that far, just eat less meat.
Can I really make a difference to our planet
We need more food to feed the world's growing population. One person alone can make only a small difference. If many people make changes to their diets, that will start to add up. It will make a greater difference if the world's heaviest meat eaters make some changes to their diets.

习惯对大脑的影响
Most of the time, your brain(大脑) is the boss of how you hit a ball, play the piano, or open a box. Recent research suggests physical activity has many advantages for our brain, encouraging the birth and growth of new brain cells(细胞).
In a 2016 study, people who ran for 45 minutes three days a week improved their scores on a memory test after four months of training. Studies suggest that exercise in younger people can add to the whole number of cells in the hippocampus(海马神经). Exercising helps keep brain cells alive longer and take the place of old cells with new ones.
At any age, you might notice over time that you feel more warning and have an easier time to remember things after you start a new way of exercising. Sticking with it could reduce your risk for having a poor memory.
The results suggest new ways of sleeping renew our little gray cells quickly. In a University of South Florida study of 130 middle aged women and men, missing out on just 16 minutes of sleep can have a bad influence on a person's memory. Instead, a good night's sleep doubled volunteers' ability to remember the words they had learned the day before.
According to a study, yoga also encourages brain plasticity(可塑性). People who practised Hatha Yoga might have a larger hippocampus. Yoga's brain changing power may come from its mix of exercise with deep stress reduction. If you're new to yoga, start small. You don't have to plan for an hour. Even ten minutes will be too long at first. Find a way of training you enjoy.

Passage 6
If you like chocolate, you're not alone. Millions of people around the world say they can't live without chocolate. But is chocolate harmful to your health Let me tell you the truth about this popular food.
Eating chocolate makes you happy. There are over three hundred chemicals in chocolate which make your brain active and make you feel happy. For example, theobromine(可可碱) can help produce feelings of happiness and make you feel less stressed. What's more, chocolate includes caffeine(咖啡因) which gives you more energy and is also found in coffee and tea.
Chocolate makes you fat. Chocolate is commonly regarded as a fattening food. In fact, cocoa beans are full of antioxidants(抗氧化剂) that are good for health. However, people often try many ways to clean up the bitterness. At the same time, a lot of antioxidants are removed too. Most store bought chocolates have high sugar and fat, and only a little cocoa. Eating these and other high fat chocolate desserts, like cakes and cookies, can really increase your weight.
Meanwhile, chocolate is bad for your teeth. This is another myth(虚构的事) that just won't go away. It's not chocolate itself that does harm to your teeth, but the sugar in chocolate products and bad teeth brushing habits! In fact, it is believed that cocoa butter(可可脂) forms a thing over our teeth, and this might actually protect rather than hurt them.
As with most things, chocolate only becomes a danger when you eat too much of it. It's important to remember that most of the health advantages come from cocoa. That's why dark chocolate is the healthiest. Choose your chocolate wisely and eat it properly, so that you can get the best of both worlds—happiness and health.

Passage 11(2023江西改编)
Eight hundred years ago, a man in southern Turkey invented an amazing clock. It was more than 7 meters high. At its base(基座) was a life size model elephant. Every half hour, something amazing happened. The whole clock came alive: Model birds, dragons, and people started to move.
The clock's inventor was an engineer named al Jazari. He lived in Turkey. Al Jazari was probably one of the greatest engineers in history. Some historians call him “the father of modern day engineering”.
We know about al Jazari mostly from a book that he wrote. ________ They include clocks and hand washing machines. The book also has drawings that show how each machine works.
Many everyday things today—from toys to car engines(发动机)—still use al Jazari's ideas. Without his machines with moving parts, we might not have modern day robots.
Today, it is still possible to see what al Jazari's elephant clock looked like. A full size working model is in Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mall. There, every half hour, al Jazari's most amazing invention comes to life once again.
How Does the Elephant Clock Work
A bowl with a small hole floats(浮) in a water tank(水箱) inside the elephant's body. As the bowl slowly sinks(下沉), it pulls a rope that moves a human figure. His moving pen shows the number of minutes past the hour.
Every half hour, the water bowl becomes full and sinks completely. This causes a ball to fall from the top of the clock. The movement of the ball causes a phoenix to move and make a sound.
The ball then drops out of a falcon's mouth into the mouth of a Chinese dragon. The weight of the ball causes the dragon's head to move down, and the dragon's tail pulls the water bowl back up.
Finally, the ball drops out of the dragon's mouth and into a vase. As the ball lands in the vase, the elephant driver moves and makes a sound. The cycle begins again until there are no more balls in the top of the clock.
1. How often did model birds start to move
