Does money buy happiness
In October 2018,someone in South Carolina won the lottery (彩票) of $1.5 billion. The possible chances of winning were 1 in 302.5 million!
It’s easy to imagine what one could do with this lucky 1 , but would this money actually make someone happy Based on the 2 of several lottery winners, it probably wouldn’t. Suddenly coming into huge sums of money can 3 a person’s life in unexpected and sometimes unpleasant ways. For example, William Post won $16.2 million in a lottery in 1998. Within three months,he was back to be broke (破产) 4 he spent a lot on worthless business. But William felt much happier without any money.
Then there was Callie Rogers, a British teenager who won $3 million in 2003. She treated her family and friends to lavish gifts and bought 5 designer clothes. After six years, Callie changed back to a poor teenager and 6 that money didn’t make her happy.
It’s found that these lottery winners may 7 know how to handle so much money and do not get advice from financial experts. They waste money on things they don’t need and 8 too much money to friends and relatives.
Researchers find that people are happy when they are able to pay for their 9 needs, such as food, clothes, a safe place to live, and health care. Expensive things only make people happy temporarily (暂时) .Spending time with family and donating reasonable amounts of money to charities make people 10 than money does.

Plastic is everywhere. From the food we eat to the air we breathe, tiny particles (颗粒) of plastic — also known as “micro plastics” 一 can be found in almost anything.
Plastic does not only cause real havoc on our oceans, but also hurts us humans. Scientists have questioned whether eating micro plastics can negatively affect human health, especially if there are pieces of plastic you’re using in daily life, like the plastic cutting board.
A recent study checked the amount of micro plastics found in the carrots cut on different types of plastic cutting boards. At the end of the study, scientists found these plastic cutting boards led to 1,114 micro plastic particles on the carrots each time the board was used. This means a plastic cutting board could make 15 milligrams of micro plastics per cut, and around 50 grams a year — it’s the weight of 10 plastic credit cards.
▲
Evidence suggests that micro plastics can be found in our blood and our bodies, and can be potentially (潜在地) harmful to our health. But Dr. LeBeau, the leader of the study, points out that the study does prove the generating (产生) of micro plastic particles, but does not prove the cutting boards can have the negative effects to human health. He said, “In fact, we’re already consuming (消耗) so many micro plastics throughout our day (like in our food or water), that the micro plastics from cutting boards won’t make a huge difference. So we don’t need to worry about it too much.”
Plus,Dr. Lebeau also talks about the pros and cons(利弊) of using other types of cutting boards. Using a wood cutting board may seem cleaner and safer, but these products may not be completely disinfected (消毒) and it may increase the risk of food-borne illness. “If you would like to avoid both altogether, I recommend replacing your plastic and wood cutting boards with ones that are made from bamboo.” He said.
42.The underlined word “havoc” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A.治理 B.灾难 C. 经济 D.宁静
43.How does the writer talk about the result of the study in Paragraph 3
A. By making a chart. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking a question. D. By taking a survey.
44.Which of the following sentences can be put in ▲
A. With so many micro plastics in our food, should we be worried
B. To solve the problems with micro plastics, what else can we do
C. So many micro plastics are found on carrots, what about other vegetables
D. Since micro plastics are harmful, how can we reduce them in our daily life
45.According to Dr. Lebeau’s words, what can we infer
A. Micro plastics are not harmful to humans indeed.
B. Micro plastics will bring more problems in our life.
C. Bamboo cutting boards will be used instead of plastic ones.
D. Safety is the key point people think about while using cutting boards.

54.答案:
Recently, our class has talked about “homework”. We have different ideas about it.
Most students have positive attitudes towards homework. They think homework can not only help them go over what they’ve learnt before but also help them deal with the problems alone. Also, they think it’s a student’s duty to finish the homework and they need to plan their time carefully. Of course, they all think homework can improve their study and help them get high marks in the exams.
However, a few students don’t think so. First, they think it takes so much time to do lots of homework that they have little time to rest or do anything they like. Second, they have to do the same boring exercises many times. As a result, they have no interest in homework anymore. And sometimes they can’t keep a balance between homework and their hobbies.
In my opinion, I think it’s important for us to do our homework on time. Homework can help us consolidate our knowledge. Make a good plan before doing homework so that we can have more time for our interests.
