In April 2019, history was made in the wilds of Asia. For the first time ever, someone took a photo of a very 1 creature. It might even be the only animal of its kind! The critter had snow-white fur and red eyes. And it was walking around a bamboo forest in the Wolong National Nature Reserve 2 southwest China.
Can you guess what the all-white, red-eyed creature is Here's a clue: It's a kind of 3 .
Any guesses It's a giant panda.
Hold on now. Don't pandas have black patches around their eyes, on their ears, and across their bodies Don't they have 4 dark eyes Well, yes. So how can the animal in the photo be a panda
It has albinism. Albinism is a 5 that affects the amount of melanin in people and animals. Melanin gives hair, skin, eyes, and fur their color. A body with little or no melanin will have white hair or fur, pale skin, and, often, reddish eyes.
Finding a giant panda with albinism was surprising. Why For one, albinism isn't common among 6 animals. And there aren't many giant pandas to begin with. There are fewer than 2,000 of them living in the wild.
Animals that do have albinism often have problems. They don't see well. This makes it hard for them to find food. And it can't be easy for them to stay alive in the wild. Their white color makes it easy for 7 to spot them. And that's not the end of their troubles. Their pale skin puts them at risk for skin cancer.
8 the 1- to 2-year-old 9 is doing well. It looks strong. It moves around with a 10 walk.
Will this panda ever appear in another photo We can't wait to find out!

My Cool Job
When you’re shopping for new shoes, what catches your eye That’s what Cherry wants to know. She’s a shoe designer. She has designed shoes for athletes and many others. Now she teaches students to follow in her footsteps.

Today, Cherry works for a program called S.E.E.D. that teaches people about the shoe design. One of its goals is diversity (多样性). S.E.E.D. opens the door to students who might not otherwise have opportunities in design (SEED wants to make sure everyone has a chance to do design, even if they usually don't get the chance. One way they do this is by welcoming students who might not usually get opportunities). “I know the power that one person can have to change someone’s life,” she says. Refill and Reuse!
DAVOS, Switzerland. Back in the day, milk was delivered to your doorstep. It came in glass bottles. It was like Amazon but with a twist: When the milk was gone, the "milkman" would pick up the old bottles when bringing more milk. The old bottles would be cleaned and used again.
Leaders at one company think we should go back to this "milkman model," but not just for milk.
TerraCycle is starting a service called Loop. It won't use disposable containers. Things like food, shampoo, laundry products, and diapers will be delivered in reusable containers. You'll put empty containers by your door. They'll then be picked up, washed, and refilled. This could reduce the amount of packaging that's made for goods. Less packaging equals less garbage.
Tom Szaky is head of TerraCycle. "Loop is about the future. [We believe that] garbage shouldn't exist," he said.
For this to work, other companies will need to do their part. Loop is working with companies like Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, and PepsiCo. Loop will deliver their products in reusable containers. And it'll take care of the pickup and cleanup.
"Our goal is that by 2030, all of our packaging will be reusable or recyclable," said Virginie Helias, a leader at Procter & Gamble.
How will the company do it Pantene shampoo will come in a "lightweight-[metal] pump container," Helias said. "Tide in the U.S. will come in a stainless-steel bottle…. Crest mouthwash will come in a glass bottle."
Environmental group Greenpeace supports Loop. But Greenpeace leaders aren't sure Loop will really help.
"What [this] will mean for the environment depends on whether [companies] are actually ready to change," said Jennifer Morgan. Morgan is head of Greenpeace International. She said that most of the businesses working with Loop are still producing single-use plastic. (Ever notice all the plastic packaging in your supermarket ) She wondered if companies were working with Loop just to look good.
But TerraCycle leaders hope that people use Loop. Lots of people. That would tell companies that disposables have to go.

Chula Vista Grad Makes a Difference
What do you do when life gives you lemons Some people say you make lemonade. But for past Chula Vista student Ryann Mojica, the answer was a bit sweeter: Look beyond yourself to see how you might encourage others.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mojica, like most people, experienced her share of struggles. Yet instead of thinking about what was difficult, she chose to keep going. She wrote a book for children. It teaches them about their feelings. But it also shows them how to be kind to others.
Mojica grew up in Chula Vista, California. She was part of a close-knit family where there was a lot of love. Though she enjoyed learning, Mojica admits that she often misbehaved in school. She credits her teachers with supporting her through it. They saw her potential and pushed her to do her best. "They gave me grace when no one else would, and I know for a fact that there is no way I would be the woman I am today…without them."
As a teen, Mojica was no longer causing mischief. But high school presented its own problems. She wasn't sure what she wanted to do with her life. Following in the footsteps of her grandmother and sister, she started studying nursing. But Mojica quickly realized that she did not enjoy the messier parts of the job! Then she had the chance to work with children with special needs. She loved it.
Mojica's future seemed secure. Then the COVID-19 pandemic led to yet another change of plans. Schools could no longer hold classes in person. So, Mojica took a job as a teacher's helper in a home-based school. She was inspired by how her students continued to learn during such trying times. But she worried about other kids who didn't have the same support her students did. How could she help them when life got tough
Mojica had the idea to write a book that would teach students how to work through their feelings. But writing a book was hard. There were months on end when Mojica stopped working. She struggled with writer's block, technology problems, and a seemingly endless series of rewrites. Yet she persisted. "At the end of the day," she says, "I know that I wanted [the book] to be out in the world."
Today, Mojica is grateful for all she learned while writing her book. And she's keen to share it with the teachers who encouraged her as a child. Moreover, she wants other students to know that they, too, can work through any difficulty. "Surround yourself with people who will love and support you," she tells them. And be true to yourself.
26.Why did Mojica write a book
A. To become a famous writer.
B. To help children deal with their feelings.
C. To make money.
D. To follow the example of her grandmother and sister.
27.What did Mojica's teachers do for her
A. They taught her how to write a book.
B. They helped her find a good job.
C. They encouraged her to study hard.
D. They gave her a chance to work with children.
28.What does the underlined word "grace" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Kindness.
B. Confidence.
C. Patience.
D. Encouragement.
29.How did Mojica feel after she started working with children with special needs

B. Confident.
C. Tired.

Building Schools with Bottles
By Tracy Vonder Brink
Is your school made of bricks or concrete blocks Many are. But some classrooms in Guatemala and El Salvador were built a different way—with bottles full of trash! Hug It Forward—bottle schools use plastic bottles, trash, and lots of community helpers. Let’s see how they do it!
First, kids and other helpers pick up trash. They’ll burn plastic bags and chip wrappers into eco—bricks. Each classroom takes about 3,500 eco—bricks to build. That’s around one ton of trash!
To make eco—bricks, the kids stuff empty plastic bags and chip wrappers into cleaned plastic bottles. They need about 80 plastic bags or around 100 chip wrappers to fill one bottle all the way to the top.
Helpers from the community build frames for the classroom walls. They add chicken wire to hold the eco—bricks.
The eco—bricks are tied in rows between the layers of chicken wire. Any gaps are filled with more plastic bags.
Rows and rows of eco—bricks make up the walls. They are just as strong and last as long as other kinds of walls.
41.How are the classrooms in Guatemala and El Salvador built differently
42.What are the materials used to build the bottle schools
43.How many eco-bricks are needed to build one classroom

45.Are the walls made of eco-bricks as strong as other kinds of walls

Hey, hey, it's your scientist pal Tania here. Today's topic is…drumroll please…the human body!
Human bodies can seem weird sometimes. After all, your body didn't come with instructions. No wonder a bunch of you sent me so many questions about it. Well, read on, curious human beings! I've got answers for you.
What are toes for
Toes aren't just weird little things that stick out of our feet. They do most of the work of keeping our balance. Toes act like teeny pegs. They dig in and make sure we stay upright when the going gets wonky.
But wait, there's more! Ever tried to walk only on your heels If so, you know that toes also put the spring in your step. Here's how that works: When you raise your heel to start a step, your toes bend. That stretches your foot like a rubber band. As you finish the step, your stretched foot snaps back to normal. That springs your body forward to the next step.
When you run, your toes bend even farther. This creates a super spring that sends you soaring through the air!
Yup, toes let humans walk, run, and even fly. Well, for a few seconds, at least.
Why are babies so cute
It's not easy to care for a baby. Their diapers get stinky, and they cry a lot. And yet, they're just so cute, right Well, guess what Their cuteness is the superpower that makes us take care of them!
Babies grab us with their powers of cuteness. We love to see a cute baby, hear it gurgle, or even smell its tiny baby head. And that's great for babies. They need our attention.
But what do we get out of it Well, we smile and get a warm and fuzzy feeling around babies. That feeling comes from chemicals that flood into our brains. Even when babies are smelly, loud, or sticky, those chemicals still flow. The chemicals make us happy, and that gets us to care for the baby's needs. Both the needy baby and our happy-hungry brains win!
How come my belly makes that weird noise when I'm hungry
It's the middle of the school day, and your belly suddenly starts growling. It sounds like angry lions are fighting in there! But it's just the strong muscles in your gut doing their jobs.
After you swallow some delicious food (mmm, like a juicy apple), your stomach soaks it in liquids called acids. These acids break food down into a gloppy goo. Your stomach's muscles then pound and mix the goo for hours. They rumble around like a washing machine. Finally, your stomach calls it quits. It sends the goo into your small intestine. For several more hours, your small intestine groans. That's because it's squeezing all the good stuff out of that goo.
You can't hear these noises when your stomach is full. But when your stomach is empty, it's like a giant echo chamber. You get the very loud hint that your stomach has run out of food. And so does everyone around you!
Speaking of food, I keep thinking of apples now. I'm off to snack on one. I hope everyBODY enjoyed this! I'll be back soon with more answers about the world around us.
Until next time, stay curious!
