A group of comics called “Tiny Eyes” go popular on the Internet. With these comics, Chinese artist Cao Siyu shares the differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.
Cao Siyu comes from Beijing. She spent the last 10 years in France, the UK and the USA. “Many foreign people that I met were interested in China.” She explained. But most of their ideas about China are out of date. I hope I can change the image of China in foreigners’ mind.” That is why Cao Siyu put her idea of “Tiny Eyes” comics into practice.
By bringing words and images together, the Chinese artist tells stories in a simple yet powerful way. She shares Chinese People’s daily life and compares how differently people act in the same situation.
In one comic, for example, she compared French cutlery (餐具) with Chinese one: While French people use eight different forks and knives for a meal, Chinese people can make it with only a pair of chopsticks. And in another comic, Cao Siyu made it clear how people from different cultures express love. She wrote below the comic, “Chinese people are not used to saying ‘I love you, Mum’. Instead, they show their love in actions.”
Cao Siyu provides a new way for foreigners to know her motherland, and her works have gathered about 20 thousand fans on the Internet. “People from one culture may not be able to fully understand another. But we can listen to each other.” she said.

Two Americans Stephen and Andersen went on a 190-day charity walk across the US to raise money for the Red Heart Fund, a charity providing poor children in Africa with money support and more.
Both at the age of 24, they have lived in the eastern state of Delaware since their birth. They have been best friends since childhood. They both like travelling and want to see the country. So when Stephen advised this cross-country journey, Andersen agreed with no hesitation(犹豫).

By September 6, they ended their trip on the west coast in San Francisco, the state of California, raising about 300,000 dollars from lots of nice people and the local businesses.

A few years ago, my husband and I were on an island for a weekend with our 3- and 4-year-old daughters. As we went back and thought about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. “We want to go to the butterfly museum,” said Ariella and Eliana.
As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands or beautiful butterflies all flapping (拍打) their coloful wings.
My girls were jumping up and down and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun. I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious and asked, “How long do butterflies live ” She said, “About ten days.” “What can butterflies do in ten days ” I asked. The guide sopped, looked at me and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place.” “Wow,” I said, “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you.”
After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus our gifts on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.
Appreciate (感激) the influence you can have on your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world a little better for everyone.

According to some old Chinese stories, there once was an ancient emperor named Shennong. At that time, people could not tell the difference between medicinal and poisonous (有毒的)plants. When they got sick, there was no medicine to treat their illnesses. Many sick people could only wait for death.
To save his people, Shennong decided to find and test out different plants. He and his followers set out on a journey in search of medicinally effective plants. Once, they saw a large forest on a high cliff (悬崖)from a distance. There must be many different kinds of plants, but they couldn’t find a way to the cliff. Suddenly, they saw some monkeys climbing along the vines and trees hanging down from the cliff. Shennong was inspired by the scene. He asked his followers to cut down the tree trunks and vines. Together they built scaffold (脚手架), with its help, they climbed to the cliff and collected many valuable plants.
Each time the team found a new type of plant, Shennong would taste it himself. Some plants made him sleepy. Some caused him to suffer pains in his stomach. Some made him tremble (颤抖) all over. After searching and testing over a long period of time, he and his followers discovered hundreds of medicinal plants.
As they continued their search, the team found a plant with small yellow flowers on a mountain. When a young man reached for it, the plant moved like a worm. Shennong picked off one piece from the plant in order to taste it. Other people tried to stop him, but Shennong said calmly, "It looks like a medicinal plant. I have to test it, or some people may misuse it.”
Suddenly, Shennong’s face turned pale and he fell on the ground. Blood flowed from his mouth and nose. Even after he was given the leaves from other medicinal plants, he was still not able to recover. The emperor soon took his last breath. People covered him with thousands of flowers. From then on, they called him the “Emperor of Medicine”.

Do you ever feel like you are just rushing from one subject to another When things happen so fast, maybe you can’t understand clearly what you are doing or learning, so it is important to stop yourself to think about what you have been doing or learning.
Self-reflection(反省)means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. Some people like to do self-reflection only in their mind. Others keep a diary. What’s more, taking notes is also OK. Each method (方法)works. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.
First, choose the right time to do it. School textbooks are made up of units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you finish a unit of study. Sometimes you know it’s the time because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit.
Finally, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a maths problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Successful students always know self-reflection is important. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.

The game of Go is one of the four most popular games in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive(竞争的) event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment(娱乐).
Go was created in China more than 4,000 years ago. Now many people around the world have shown great interest in it, too. Moreover, Go is still used as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries today.
The game of Go has many meanings for real life. It represents a square world of round pieces in black and white. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is the same as how one might solve a difficult problem in life.
Go carries deeper cultural and competitive meanings. In the game of Go, the players do not wipe out(消灭) each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. The one who makes the other side into a dead corner wins the game.

When it comes to John’s turn, he usually searches online, picks out certain stories and makes PowerPoint presentations. “I’ve become skilled at finding information online and using Microsoft Office.” John said. However, many students think this trend (趋势) also brings problems. Some students just copy the answers online without thinking. They become lazy.
A head teacher in Andy and John’s school, Mr. Li said that knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control (控制). My name is Katie. I think everybody should take care of the environment. I live in Edmonton. It is a city in Canada. The air and water are clean in Edmonton, but sometimes people waste a lot.
What do we waste the most Paper, I think. People waste water, too. I don't want to waste water. I try to save water in many ways. I take short showers. I often check to make sure there aren't any leaks, and I never forget to turn off the tap.
Do we recycle at home Yes! We sort our pop cans, beer bottles and waste paper. A truck picks up our recycling every week. It is made into new things. We reuse our plastic bags, too. We use them again and again, or we put other garbage in them.
Cars and factories make the most pollution. I think there are too many cars in Edmonton. More people should ride bikes or take buses. I ride my bike to school every day. Unlike other types of transportation, a bike doesn't make any pollution. Buses make some pollution, but lots of people can travel on a bus. Buses make less pollution than cars.
In fact, if each of us makes a small change in our life, we can make a big difference to our environment. It's not too hard to protect the environment. We just need to try.

It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common(共同的). They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell the differences between them sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet(芭蕾)lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “Would you like to be me for a day ” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen’s ballet dress while Karen put Grace’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn`t dare(敢)to hand in her work.
At the same time, Grace was struggling(挣扎)in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can’t depend on copying what others are doing.”

After the 2022 Spring Festival Gala, an amazing show called The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) became a hit. The show is based on a classical Chinese painting—A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains by Wang Ximeng, an artist who lived during the Song dynasty(960-1279). Watching the show is like going on a journey back to the Song dynasty. The painting is now kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Netizens made a word for the challenging move—“blue-green waist”(青绿腰). In fact, the bend(弯曲) in the show is meant to sketch the shape of steep cliffs and winding mountains in the painting. A number of people take on the challenge by bending backward. Some dancers even bend backward at a 90-degree angle. The graceful but difficult backbend has become popular. However, without years of training or proper instructions, people may hurt their bones.
The dancers in the show have trained for years before getting on stage. To show the beauty of the painting through traditional Chinese dance movements, the directors studied a lot of materials and read almost all the poems of the Song dynasty. It took them almost 20 months to put the show on the stage.

On Saturday afternoon, Anne invited Diana to her house for tea. She prepared some fruitcake, some jam and some of the raspberry cordial in the cupboard. Diana poured herself a glass of raspberry cordial and drank it. She found it tasty and drank two more. Suddenly, she turned pale and then left Green Gables hurriedly.
On Monday, Anne went to see if Diana was feeling better. She soon ran back home with tears rolling down her cheeks. Marilla asked her what had happened. The Yangtze River, about 6,300 kilometres long, is the longest river in Asia. It provides a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people. It covers an area of 1.8 million square kilometres, about a fifth of the national total. The river also provides a third of our country’s fresh water resources. Along with the Yellow River, it is considered as China’s “mother river”.
However, in recent years, this “mother river” has met with some environmental problems. It was seriously polluted and the number of the fish is getting smaller. To solve these problems, the government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law. The law came into force on March 1, 2021. There are nine parts in the law, covering areas such as resource protection, anti-pollution measures, green development and legal responsibilities. More importantly, the law has introduced a fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze River’s natural waterways. According to the new law, both the central government and local organizations would put the river protection into their economic (经济的) and social development plans.
Around 231,000 fishermen had given up their fishing rights along the Yangtze River. Chinese Vice-premier Han Zheng said that more support should be given to these people to help them find new jobs. He also calls for stronger efforts to help prevent activities which are not allowed by the law and encourages the public to support the ban.

Cell Phone Madness
When I opened the box at my 12th birthday party, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really got a cell phone!
As soon as I got to my school the next morning, I showed off my phone and asked everyone for their number. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. Luckily I didn’t get caught using it. I was pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I got Grade D for the first time. To make matters worse, my mom had to sign the test. It was hard to show my mom the paper. She never expected “D” on my tests. Well, finally, I showed her and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed(失望的).
Weeks passed and my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They would say, “We have noticed that you never pay attention to us. It’s like you have your own little world now and we don’t communicate as much with your phone.” I acted like they were wrong, but then I started to wonder if it was true that I was spending too much time on the phone.
A week later I tried going a whole day without a cell phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different point of view towards cell phones.
Phones really take you away from the rest of the world.I’m not saying that phones are bad and not to use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day. My phone took away time from my homework and from my family. It also affected my grades.
I will keep using my phone, but I will have it under better control.

81根据上下文“The Yangtze River, about 6,300 kilometres long, is the longest river in Asia.”和“provides a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people.”可知长江是亚洲最长的河流,它是亿万人民的生命线,所以“It”指的是长江。故填The Yangtze River.
82根据第二段中“It was seriously polluted and the number of the fish is getting smaller. To solve these problems, the government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law.”可知为了解决污染严重、鱼的数量减少等问题,政府通过了《长江保护法》。故填To solve (some) environmental problems.
83根据第二段中“There are nine parts in the law, covering areas such as resource protection, anti-pollution measures, green development and legal responsibilities.”可知《长江保护法》共有九个部分。故填Nine/9.
84根据最后一段中“Chinese Vice-premier Han Zheng said that more support should be given to these people to help them find new jobs.”可知国务院副总理韩正表示,应该给予这些渔民更多的支持,帮助他们找到新的工作。故填By helping them find jobs./By offering (giving) them (new) jobs./By offering (giving) jobs to them./By providing them with jobs./By providing jobs for them.
85结合全文语境,尤其是第二段中“To solve these problems, the government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law…More importantly, the law has introduced a fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze River’s natural waterways.” (It’s) Useful./Helpful./Meaningful./It helps protect the Yangtze River.
