There is a story from many years ago of a primary school teacher. Her name was Rose.
On the first day of school, as Rose looked out over her new fifth grade class, her attention was immediately drawn to two boys, Mark and Charlie. Mark had a high energy that filled the room, his voice echoing even in casual conversations. He laughed loudest and answered questions with enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Charlie, Mark’s partner-in-crime, had a naughty grin and a twinkle in his eyes. Together, they were perfect.
While Mark would com mand attention with his tales, Charlie would comment cleverly, making the whole class burst into laughter. Rose could already tell that these two would keep her on her toes. She smiled to herself, though, ready for an eventful year ahead. She knew she had to find a way to channel their energy positively, turning their enthusiasm into a driving force for learning.
One day, Rose had a unique assignment for her students. She asked them to list each classmate's name on two sheets, leaving gaps between. Next, she instructed them to write down the nicest thing they could think of for each student. The assignment consumed the whole period. As they left, each student handed in their papers.
Over the weekend, Rose wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, creating individual lists for every student. On Monday, she handed out the lists. Soon, happiness spread across the room. Mark, known for his naughty behavior, looked astonished. “I had no idea I mattered to anyone,” he whispered, visibly moved. Beside him, Charlie, Mark’s partner- in-crime, said similarly.“I never realized others thought so highly of me.”
No one ever mentioned those lists in class again. Rose never found out if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter.

【答案】
The atmosphere in the classroom shifted, especially Mark and Charlie. Mark started setting up study groups, and even volunteered to organize school events, where he was busy seeking opinions and looking up for guidance. Charlie, on the other hand, emerged as a thoughtful contributor in discussions, revealing insights that often left the class in awe. Their transformation was evident not only in their academic performance but also in their interactions. The mischievous duo, once the source of relentless energy and disruption, began to channel their enthusiasm into constructive outlets. The list had served as a mirror, reflecting the positive qualities others saw in them, qualities they had previously been unaware of.
On a bright afternoon years later, two gentlemen knocked at Rose’s door, holding the lists. Rose, a bit puzzled, opened the door to see two familiar faces, now grown and matured. It was Mark and Charlie. “Miss Rose,” Mark began, his voice still holding that trace of energy she remembered, “we wanted to thank you personally.” He held up the aged list, edges frayed but words still clear. Charlie continued, “These lists were a turning point for us. Knowing we mattered, and that we had value in others’ eyes changed our paths.” Seeing the profound impact a simple classroom activity had left on them, Rose smiled.

I was eating breakfast at home in Hampshire in March this year, scrolling through social media on my phone, when a story caught my eye. It was about a nine-year-old dog, Charlie, dubbed (称为) the loneliest in Britain. He had been in a rescue centre in Somerset for more than 500 days.
For some reason, nobody wanted to adopt him. I clicked on the link and straight away these huge, sad eyes stared back at me. I was emotional. I turned to my husband, Sam, and said: "We’ve got to have him.” He read the article over my shoulder and felt exactly the same way. We wanted to give Charlie a happy home and a new lease of life.
Over the past few years we have tried to adopt a few different dogs, but we haven’ had any luck — we were never top of the list. Sam and I got used to filling in forms and not hearing anything. We’d almost given up hope.
But Charlie is an older dog and we felt we’d be suited — even older dogs have a lot of love left to offer. So we took our time with the application, sent photographs of our house and garden. We explained why Charlie would be happy with us, and then forgot all about it.
A few days later we received an email from Brent Knoll animal centre, saying we’d been shortlisted. We were thrilled. They asked us to visit Charlie to be interviewed and to see if he liked us.
When we arrived we were taken to the staff room. We didn’t know what to expect. We hadn’t been told much about Charlie’s circumstances, but as he had been given up for adoption and hadn’t been placed with a new owner for so long, we thought there might be issues. But the dog that bounded (蹦跳) in was full of joy and charisma.

【答案】
He came straight over to us. As soon as he saw Sam, he jumped on his lap as if they’d been best friends for ever. That day, we gave him treats and played ball. The staff at the centre became teary when it was time to say goodbye. They had looked after him brilliantly for almost two years. The drive back took a few hours but Charlie was well behaved. When he got to our house, he immediately made himself at home.
We feel proud that we’ve given Charlie a new home and a second chance. Charlie gets two walks a day and is getting better at walking on a lead: when we first got him, he pulled a lot. He’s always so happy to see us when we come through the door. Our daughter is in love with him as well. She brings him presents every time she comes round. He’s spoiled and we enjoy him so much. Charlie was once the loneliest dog in Britain. But he’s not alone any more.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

I took a job as a receptionist for a veterinarian weeks ago. As an enthusiastic animal lover, I accepted the position on the condition that I wouldn’t have to assist with any wounded animals. I couldn’t bear to see any creature in pain.
At the end of my first week, we were about to close the office for the day when a young man in his thirties ran up to us holding a severely injured Doberman pinscher puppy in his arms and begging us to save his life. The four-month-old pup had been hit by a car.
The doctor and I rushed back into the operating room immediately. The poor creature was in critical condition. The only place the skin was still attached to this poor little animal’s body was around one shoulder. The vet worked tirelessly for what seemed like hours, stitching him back together again. That was the easy part. The puppy had broken multiple bones, including his spine. If he was lucky enough to survive the next few days, we were quite sure he would never walk again.
The day forever changed my life. The veterinarian instructed me, and I became his assistant in all things medical. One of my first jobs was to give that Doberman puppy daily physical therapy. I moved his tiny legs on a regular basis to keep his muscles from weakening.
Weeks went by until one day, I felt this little fighter push back ever so slightly. And he continued to push back till he could finally use his legs. What a miracle!
Day by day, the little fighter made a little bit progress until the vet called his owner telling him that his puppy was ready to go home. Having accompanied the puppy for several months, I could imagine how excited and relieved the young man was. And I was sure he would took good care of. Two days later, the puppy was taken away by his owner.

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors), was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forwards very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn't earn enough money to feed five children. I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office. Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don't care who her father is;her grades can't match Martha's at all. I won't lie or falsify (伪造)records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone's voice sounded calm. “Joann's father is not only on the Board (董事会), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
Shaking and sad, I, waited a few minutes and walked away.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There's been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won't cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said,“I'll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” I cried on the way home.
