A friend invited us to help serve dinner at Tent City. A number of tents (帐篷) were set up for the homeless in the area.
I took my nine-year-old boy with me. He had a lot of questions because this whole thing challenged (挑战) his common ideas about how people lived in the world.
“Why don’t they have homes ”
“Why don’t they get food the way we do ”
We talked through the reasons why people end up in this kind of situation. Many of the people we served were missing teeth or had dirty clothes. To my surprise, they were quite thankful that I had brought my boy. Many said how fun it was to have an active child around. After dinner, I saw my son talking about sports happily with several elderly gentlemen. He was having a great time with them.
As some people returned to their tents, I heard him tell them, “Thanks so much for coming to have dinner with us.” I could see that my son’s simple words touched them greatly. I hugged him as we left to go home because it touched me too.
We should treat people with respect, no matter who they are, I think my boy has learned this.

Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk
First, you had to learn how to balance(平衡) yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power—you’d stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time-you did it!
Now, the next step—walking. You’d seen others do it. It didn’t look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong—more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people found you walking, they cheered, “Oh, look at what the kid is doing. ” This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child—how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering You couldn’t wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
The Harry Potter series (系列丛书) by J.K. Rowling is considered to be one of the most beloved stories of all time. There are plenty of life lessons that can be learned from the series. Here are four of my favorites:
Friends will always try their best to help you.
Whenever Harry finds himself in trouble, Ron and Hermione face it with him together. Harry, Ron and Hermione complete each other with their own talents. With the support of friends, anything is possible.
It is great to be smart, but sometimes, it isn’t the most important thing.
There are more important things than smartness — friendship and courage. As Hermione points out, sometimes knowing the right answer is not enough. Harry would never have been successful without the help of Hermione, but his courage makes him able to fight for what he believes in.
You control your future through the choices that you make.
Sometimes it may seem everything is out of your hands. However, with the right mindset (心态), you can control your life. For teenagers, everything seems to be controlled by pressure from parents, teachers and friends. But your thoughts and actions can make everything change.
Love is the most powerful weapon (武器) you can have.
Love saves Harry many times throughout the stories. Harry understands that he is more powerful than Voldemort, not because he is a better wizard (男巫) but because Voldemort never knows love. Harry’s love for his friends allows him to put them before himself. It is just love that makes Harry Potter go through hard times.

Tea bag drinking is most Westerners’ favorite way of drinking tea. Do you know how it came about
The tea bag was invented in 1908 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk (丝绸) bags for people to try. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. The tea tasted good, and people thought it was easy to clean the cup. They were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.
Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze (薄纱) and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag. Tea bags were soon a hit in the UK, and today 85% of tea in the UK is packed in paper bags.

Everyone makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. And decisions could be the turning point of your life.
I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3.
Before I made that decision I was one of the boys who tried hard to act as an adult. I didn’t know that only kids want to show themselves as adults. I didn’t listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades were poor. Then the high school entrance exam came.
At the turning point of my life, my mom had a conversation with me. I wanted to turn it down but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn’t refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.
Mom smiled and asked again, “I asked: what do you WANT to do ”
I never seriously thought about the question. So, I kept silent.
“Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society (步入社会),” she went on, “it is your own decision. Your life should be decided by you, not by anyone else, including me.” After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.
For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about myself, my life and what kind of person I wanted to become.
It took me about a week to make the biggest decision so far in my life I want to be a man who makes a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.
The path (小路) to my future became clear to me. I didn’t act rebelliously (叛逆地) any more. With passion (激情) in my heart, I studied hard. Now, I’m 17 and I’m in one of the best schools in my city, in one of the best classes at the school and I’m one of the best students in the class.
Thanks to the decision, I have become what I am today.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the characters, the stories and the writing of the Harry Potter series. Not only are they interesting, they also teach us many valuable life lessons.

The other frog didn’t think so and replied, “Not so soon, my friend! We left the first marsh when it got dry, so, don’t you think first how we can get out of this well if it gets dry ” The first frog couldn’t speak a word because he thought his friend was right.
However, many people still prefer loose-leaf tea. This is because some tea companies put not very good tea in their tea bags. But for most drinkers, tea bags are still the easy, tasty way to go.

It only takes one night to become a star in the Internet time.
This is true of Tamdrin , a 20-year-old Tibetan man who recently drew a lot of attention after a cameraman posted a short video of him on Douyin. Tamdrin lives in Litang County in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichun Province.
People say they like his sun-kissed skin, mop(蓬乱) of brown hair and comforting smile. They say Tamdrin has “stars in his eyes” and is different from young male idols (偶像) who have perfectly clean faces and fine makeup(妆容).
Within five days, Tamdrin got over 2.5 million followers on Douyin. After he became famous, some companies invited him to become a professional online celebrity—famous person. Instead of doing this, Tamdrin got a job with Litang County’s culture, tourism and sports investment(投资) development company.
“Tamdrin has been working for our company to help make tourism in, Litang County more popular,” the company’s manager Gao Xiaoping told Red Star News. “He’ll get a monthly pay of 3,500 yuan. We’ll help him to decide which company he can work with so he won’t be cheated.”

Leo was a small and thin boy living in a small village. Some boys in the village often bullied (欺负) him and Leo was afraid.
One day, an old wizard (巫师) went by the village and saw Leo being bullied. So when the bad boys left, he gave Leo a lion’s tail. “It’s a magic tail.” the wizard said, “When someone wears it and acts bravely, he or she will turn into a strong lion.” Leo hung the lion’s tail behind his body and decided to teach the bad boys a lesson.
But when the boys came, Leo was afraid and tried to run away.Yet they caught him. Suddenly, Leo showed the tail and remembered what the wizard had said. He became brave. He looked them in the eyes and said he would make them regret doing that. Leo felt the goose bumps (鸡皮疙瘩) all over his body. “This means that I am turning into a lion.” he thought. The boys ran away in fear. Leo wanted to catch them, but he found his legs were as short as before. Leo was very happy, though a little disappointed because his lion body had lasted only a short time.
When the wizard saw it, he came to Leo. “You are great.” said the wizard, “But have you ever seen a lion fighting No one fights with lions because they know how brave and strong lions are.” Yes, Leo had never seen a lion fighting. Buy Nothing Day
For many people, the last weekend of November kicks off the holiday shopping season. But a growing number of people are celebrating a different kind of holiday. It’s called Buy Nothing Day. On this day, people are encouraged not to spend any money at all. The movement was started in 1995 by a group who cared about the environmental effects of shopping. “If we buy something, we think we are helping the economy. But we’re killing the planet, and wasting our resources,” said one organizer. “For one thing, just think about all the paper and plastic we’re wasting on shopping bags.”
There are Buy Nothing Festivals in most major cities. Participants go to big shopping centers and malls and hand out leaflets about the bad effects of shopping. Other participants cut up their credit cards in public.
Some organizers are unhappy this year because major TV networks will not give them air time to advertise Buy Nothing Day. Although it’s hard to advertise this event, over one million people in at least 65 countries are expected to take part in the next Buy Nothing Day.

I had spent an hour in the bank with my dad to transfer (转帐) some money. I asked him, “Dad, why not use online banking ”
“Why would I do that ” He replied.
“Well, then you won’t have to spend an hour here to transfer your money. You can do your shopping online. Everything will be easier!” I was excited to try to persuade (说服) my father to use online banking.
He asked, “If I do that, I won’t have to step out of the house ”
“Yes!” I said. I told him how even large things like cars or computers can be delivered (递送) to our doors now and how SF (顺丰速运) delivers everything.
However, his answer left me tongue-tied. He said, “Since I walked into this bank today, I have met four of my friends and I have chatted a while with the staff (员工). I have plenty of spare time, so I like to come to the bank. Two years ago, when I was seriously hurt, the store owner from whom I buy fruit came to see me. Besides, when your mom fell down a few days ago, the bank manager saw her and helped her get to the hospital.”
He continued, “Why would I want to stare at my computer all the time I like to know the person that I’m dealing with and not just the ‘seller’. Does SF deliver bonds (情感纽带) and relationships as well ”
I was silent after hearing his words. My dad was right, of course. We shouldn’t depend so much on technology. It’s better to spend time with real people.

A teacher once told her students to bring a bag and some potatoes to school. When they didn’t want to forgive (原谅) a person, they chose a potato and wrote the person’s name on it. Then they put it in the bag. Some of their bags became heavier and heavier.
They were told to carry their bags with them everywhere for one week. They would put them beside their beds at night, on the seats when sitting on buses, and next to their desks at school. Carrying the bags everywhere made the students very tired. They felt heavy stones in their hearts. And they had to pay attention to them all the time, so they didn’t forget them. The potatoes went bad and smelt terrible soon.
Forgiveness is a gift to other people. However, it is also a gift to us at the same time. If we keep our sadness and hatred (仇恨) in our hearts, we will have to carry them around all our lives. So we should learn to forgive.
