Just Cycle and Fold away
There’s no excuse not to get on your bike this spring. Get your indoor cycling fit and feel the benefits.
Great for general cardio (有氧的) fitness, exercise bikes can be a brilliant way of training at home. However, choosing the right bike is incredibly important, which is something that Roger Black and his team recognized when creating the Roger Black Folding Bike.
“Excellent value for money. Especially the ability to fold the exercise bike into a vertical (直立的) position and wheel it away for storage. This can also prevent you from throwing your clothes on it at the end of the day! Even if we are limited in space at home and work, we can continue physical activity with a Roger Black Folding Bike. This bike is helping me achieve my fitness goals following a recent running injury.”
——Brian Smith
“Best Present EVER are the words from my 77-year-old father who received his Roger Black fitness bike for his birthday. He said it is so simple and easy to use. The seat is VERY comfortable, so using it every day is a pleasure. It folds away nearly so it can be stored behind a door when necessary.”

It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover,” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
24. Which word can best describe the author’s daughter
A. Thoughtful. B. Wealthy. C. Easy-going. D. Hard-working.
25. Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet
A. It cost too much. B. It was looking dirty.
C. It was not sent to someone in need. D. There was not enough room for his new coat.
26. What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old
A. Telling his daughter. B. Buying a new one soon.
C. Sending something else to charity. D. Donating it to charity.
27. What does the author want to show in the last paragraph
A. Love is the key to joy. B. Giving fills our wants.
C. The more you give, the more you lose. D. A coat is large enough to cover our wants.
C
At this very moment around the world, athletes are stepping almost naked into freezing cold rooms. Why on earth are they doing this Because it’s supposed to help them feel better.
The treatment is called whole-body cryotherapy Basketball star LeBron James, soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo, and boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. have all tried it. The therapy works like this. You take off everything but your underwear. Then you put on warm socks and gloves and step into a small room that looks sort of like a shower, except your head sticking 16% out the top. Once you’re locked in, air cooled to below -200°F (-129°C) fills the room. That’s way colder than Antarctica (南极洲). You stay in for two to three minutes.
Supporters believe the extremely cold air helps muscles recover faster and reduces other body pain. After his first cryotherapy sessions, Phil Mackenzie, a professional rugby player, felt noticeably better. He told Scientific American, “I felt refreshed right away. My sleep was better.” Soon, he was using it four times a week. Those who promote cryotherapy make all sorts of wild claims about its benefits. Supposedly, that extremely cold air can increase focus, improve skin tone, make you happier, burn calories, slow aging, and much more.
Is there any evidence to back up these incredible claims Nope. Several small scientific studies have looked at whether the therapy can improve muscle recovery after exercise, with encouraging results. But there just isn’t enough evidence to show that the therapy works. The benefits some people experience may just be the placebo effect. That’s when a patient’s expectation that a treatment will work leads to an improvement.
The US Food & Drug Administration has actually issued a warning about whole-body cryotherapy. It cautions that the liquid nitrogen (氮) used to cool the room may make it difficult to breathe. Frost bite is another potential risk, which is why participants wear gloves and socks.
What do you think Is it a chance for a better athletic performance worth the risk
28. What can we learn about the therapy according to the first two paragraphs
A. The whole-body cryotherapy can help athletes recover.
B. The therapy has won popularity with only great athletes.
C. People need to stay in a freezing small room with almost nothing on.
D. People need to wear gloves and socks after cold air fills the room.
29. Why does the author mention Phil Mackenzie in Paragraph 3
A. To explain a rule. B. To support an idea.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a prediction.
30. Why do people feel better after receiving the therapy
A. Many great athletes have received the therapy.
B. Extremely cold air is beneficial to people’s health.
C. Scientific studies have proved the effect of the therapy.
D. The therapy may have psychological benefit to them.
31. Which of the following best describes the authorities’ attitude to the therapy
A. Careful. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
D
The secret to eating less and being happy about it may have been cracked years ago—by McDonald’s. According to a new study from Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab, small non-food rewards—like the toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals—stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as food does.
The researchers, led by Martin Reimann, carried out a series of experiments to see if people would choose a smaller meal if it was paired with a non-food item.
They found that most of both kids and adults chose a half-sized portion (一份) when combined with a prize. Both choices were priced the same.
Even more interesting is that the promise of a future reward was enough to make adults choose the smaller portion. One of the prizes used was a lottery ticket, with a $10, $50 or $100 payout, and this was as effective as a practical gift in persuading people to eat less.
“The fact that participants were willing to substitute (代替) part of a food item for the only possibility of a relatively small monetary award is interesting,” says Reimann.
He says that in theory it is the emotional component of these intangible (无形的) prizes that make them effective. In fact, vaguely-stated possibilities of winning a prize were more effective than choices with hard odds included.
“One explanation for this finding is that possible awards may be more emotionally provoking than certainty awards,” says Reimann. “The uncertainty of winning provides added attraction and desire through emotional ‘thrills.’ The possibility of receiving an award also produces a state of hope, a state that is in itself psychologically rewarding. “In other words, there’s a reason why people like to make a bet.
How might this knowledge be used to help people eat more healthily
One possibility is a healthy choice that offers the chance to win a spa weekend. Or maybe the reward of a half-sized portion could be a half-sized dessert to be claimed only on a future date. That would get you back in the restaurant, and make you eat a little less.
32. What do we learn about McDonald’s inclusion of toys in its Happy Meals
A. It may throw light on people’s desire to crack a secret.
B. It has proved to be key to McDonald’s business success.
C. It may be a pleasant way for kids to reduce their food intake.
D. It appeals to kid’s curiosity to find out what is hidden inside.
33. What is the finding of the researchers led by Martin Reimann
A. Reducing food intake is not that difficult if people go to McDonald’s more.
B. Most kids and adult s don’t actually feel hungry when they eat half of their meal.
C. Most kids and adults would choose a smaller meal that came with a non-food item.
D. Eating a smaller portion of food does good to the health of kids and adults alike.
34. What is most interesting in Martin Reimann’s finding
A. Adults chose the smaller portion on the mere promise of a future award.
B. Kids preferred an award in the form of money to one in the form of a toy.
C. Both kids and adults felt satisfied with only half of their meal portions.
D. Neither children nor adults could resist the temptation of a free toy.
35. What can we infer from Martin Reimann’s finding
A. People should eat much less if they wish to stay healthy and happy.
B. More fast food restaurants are likely to follow McDonald’s example.
C. More studies are needed to find out the impact of emotion on behavior.
D. We can lead people to eat less while helping the restaurant business.

Many people find it hard to say no, even when they are over-stressed, over-booked and just too busy to take on anything else. 36 . But it’s important to learn how to say no to people and their requests. Being unable can cause more stress, which may eventually turn to resentment (怨恨). 37 . This article discusses some strategies you can use to set boundaries, protect your personal time and say no more often.
I’m sorry – I can’t do this right now
Sometimes, it helps to wait and think about whether you can take on a commitment. It’s usually best not to rush into things. 38 . Most reasonable people will accept this as an answer, so if someone keeps pressuring you, they’re being rude.
Let me think about it
If you’re uncomfortable being firm or are dealing with pushy people, it’s OK to say, “Let me think about it and get back to you.” 39 . This strategy also allows you to think about whether you want to say “yes” to another commitment. To decide, do a cost-benefit analysis and then get back to them with a yes or no.
40
If you would really like to do what they’re requesting, but don’t have the time, it’s fine to say no to all or part of the request but mention a lesser commitment that you can make. This way you’ll still be partially involved, but it will be on your own terms.
A. I can’t do this, but I can do that
B. If you struggle with this, then you’re not alone
C. I wish I could, but I have a lot going on right now
D. If pressured, reply that it doesn’t fit into your schedule and change the subject
E. This gives you a chance to review your schedule and consider your choices
F. Luckily, you can learn how to say no to people without causing hurt feelings
G. You have every right to ensure you have time for the things that are important to you

上文“Many people find it hard to say no, even when they are over-stressed, over-booked and just too busy to take on anything else.(许多人发现很难说不,即使是在压力过大、超额安排、太忙而没有时间做其他事情的时候。)”
上文“But it’s important to learn how to say no to people and their requests. Being unable can contribute to more stress, which may eventually turn to resentment (但是学会拒绝别人和他们的要求是很重要的。不会说“不”会导致更多的压力,最终可能变成怨恨)”指出学会拒绝别人很重要,如果不会拒绝别人会导致别人怨恨你,下文“This article discusses some strategies you can use to set boundaries, protect your personal time and say no more often.(这篇文章讨论了一些策略,你可以用来设定界限,保护你的个人时间,并更经常地对别人说“不”。)”
上文“Sometimes, it helps to wait and think about whether you can take on a commitment. It’s usually best not to rush into things. (有时候,等待和思考一下你是否能够承担责任是有帮助的。通常最好不要急于求成)”指出在别人提出要求后,你要先思考一下自己是否能承担责任,不要急于求成,下文“Most reasonable people will accept this as an answer, so if someone keeps pressuring you, they’re being rude.(大多数通情达理的人都会接受这个答案,所以如果有人一直向你施压,他们就是粗鲁的。)”
上文“If you’re uncomfortable being firm or are dealing with pushy people, it’s OK to say, “Let me think about it and get back to you.”
由下文“If you would really like to do what they’re requesting, but don’t have the time, it’s fine to say no to all or part of the request but mention a lesser commitment that you can make.(如果你真的想做他们要求的事情,但是没有时间,对所有或者部分要求说“不”是没有关系的,但是要提到一个你可以做出的较小的承诺。)”

第49题 C 由下文but she soon kept her head,推断前文相反的意义,(海啸来了),Sabrina感到害怕(frightened),但很快保持冷静。
第53题 D 前文to her relief,后文海滩很快(the beach was rapidly...)

Text 8
W: Come to my office, Billy. Look at your messy hair. This is the third time you have been late for class within this week. And every time you went in, you disturbed the teacher’s class.
M: Sorry, Miss. I didn’t mean to do that, but it was my alarm clock that didn’t wake me up.
W: That is not a proper excuse. You could set it ahead of the exact time so that you could have got up earlier and not have been late.
M: I did that, but it seemed useless when I found the batteries had run out after I woke up this morning. I rushed to school and luckily, my neighbour Mr. Green gave me a hand and took me to school with his car.
W: So you could have made it. But you were still late for class.
M: The thing is, when I got off, I found I had left my bag in his car. And it was too late to get it back when I realized that. I went straight to the nearest shop and gave him a call. I waited for five minutes before Mr. Green drove back.
W: Finally, he gave you your bag and you came to the classroom and you were already 15minutes late for class at that time. Is that all
M: Miss, you seem to know the entire story. May I go back to class now Otherwise I will be late for the following class.
Text 9
W: Help me decide on which type of hotel room to book.
M: I want the one with a bed.
W: Very funny. We have a choice of different views, and each one is a different price. For instance, a room with a city view is 175 a night.
M: 175 a night ! That’s highway robbery!
W: If you think that’s too steep, there are a few other options. We can get a courtyard room with no view for 120 a night or a room with an obstructed or peek-a-boo ocean views for 130 a night.
M: I don’t really care which type of room we get as long as we don’t end up with a room on the ground floor. I don’t like having people walking back and forth outside my window all night.
W: Okay, I can request a room on an upper floor. You really don’t have a preference
M: No, not really.
W: There is a penthouse room for 400 a night.
M: What ! For that price, I’d better get a view of the Eiffel Tower, the Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China!
Text 10
W: For millions of Americans, the most wonderful day of the year is December 25— Christmas.
For one thing, it marks the end of the busy time of year. Many people need a rest after weeks of buying gifts, going to parties, organizing travel and getting their homes ready for the holiday. With all this, it is often said that Christmas has lost its meaning as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Some churches in the United States have called off Christmas Day services, so people can spend the day with their families. Another important part of the Christmas season is music. Among traditional carols, one of the most popular is “Silent Night”. But not all Americans celebrate Christmas. And even those who do might not celebrate it as a religious holiday. This is true of Christians as well as non-Christians. Still, they treat it as a special day.
And it is hard to think of anyone that Christmas is more special for than children. Of course, this has a lot to do with the tradition of a kindly old man with a big belly and a bright red suit. Children know Santa Claus as the one who leaves gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve.
