Rolling, rolling, rice cakes,
Very, very nice cakes!
“What a beautiful song, ” thought Steven as he looked into the hole, leaning over so far that he lost his balance and fell to the bottom. After landing, the man looked up and saw hundreds of little mice.
“Thank you for the delicious rice cakes,” said one mouse. “Now please take this, ” it said as it handed the man a small bag of rice. While the mice rolled the man out of the hole, they sang:
Rolling, rolling rice man,
Very, very nice man!
When the proud man finally reached the top, he raced home. “That's a lovely little bag of rice, ” his wife noticed, “but it’s too small to do us much good.” However, after she poured the rice into a bowl, the bag was still full. To everyone’s surprise, it went on in this way again and again. Soon, the man and his wife had enough rice to last the rest of their lives, all because of some thankful little mice.

As a teenager, Rock left high school and started telling jokes in clubs in New York City. Even at the age of 18 , Chris Rock was very funny. He told jokes about his family (his parents were very strict) , and about growing up in Brooklyn in the 1980s. Many of his jokes were also about high school , which Rock says was terrible.
Famous people went to see Rock’s performances. One man, Eddie Murphy, helped him to get work on television and in the movies. Chris Rock still acts in movies, but he does not want to be a serious actor because comedy is more important for him. It makes people laugh, but it can also make people think.
He also created a TV show called “Everybody Hates Chris”. It is about his teenage years growing up and going to school in Brooklyn. In 2006, it became one of the best shows on American television. Today, Chris Rock is still keen on doing live shows around the world.2023学年第一学期期中素质调研

My six-year-old granddaughter, Caitlynd, and I stopped at a bakery for some bread. As we were going out the door, a young teenage boy was coming in.
This young man had no hair on the sides of his head and some blue hair on top of it. One of his nostrils was pierced(穿孔), and his ears were full of rings. He held a skateboard under one arm and a basketball under ___58_____.Caitlynd, who was walking ahead of me, stopped when she saw the teen.
I thought he'd scared her and she'd frozen on the spot. I was wrong. My Grand Angel backed up against the door and opened it as ___59____ as it would go. Now I was face to face with the young man. I stepped aside and let him pass. His response was a kind "Thank you very much".
On our way to the car, I praised Caitlynd for her __60____ in holding open the door for the young man. She didn't seem to be __61_____ by his appearance but I wanted to make sure. If a grandmotherly talk about freedom of self-expression and allowing people their differences was in order, I wanted to be ready.
It ___62_____ that the person who needed the talk was me. The only thing Caitlynd noticed about the teen, was the fact that his arms were full. ‘He would’ve had a hard time to open the door." I saw the partially shaved head, the blue hair, the piercings and the earrings. She saw a person carrying something under each arm and heading toward a door. I’m always the one who is so quick to judge. In the future, I hope to get down on her ___63____ and raise my sights.

The advertising has gone on for years: Smart homes are now available. There are coffee pots that turn on when the alarm clock rings. There are fridges that send an alert when the milk runs out. These smart home appliances are greatly c 64 _ our lives.
However, It seems f 65 people are making their homes smart. According to a U.S. survey, only six percent of American families have a smart appliance. So why are smart home appliances having a hard time reaching the market We think there are several r 66 .
First, a lot of smart appliances are just fun. Their new features are not really
n 67 . Many of these appliances are too expensive. One of Samsung’s smart fridges has cameras inside of it. It can allow the user to know what he is short of while he is shopping. However, the fridge sells for $5,000. People who can a 68 it probably don’t do their own shopping. For the rest of us, we r 69 check the food in our fridges, don’t we Why do we need a smart fridge
Besides, the technology is not yet perfect. There are complaints that smart appliances sometimes stop working or become “dull”. There is also a lack of standards(标准) . As a result, appliances from d 70 companies cannot “communicate” with each other.
Do you look forward to a smart home Are you willing to pay for smart appliances
D) Answer the questions (根据短文,回答下列问题) (7分)
During summer vacations, I would volunteer at the vet's, so I'd seen a lot of dogs. Minnie was by far the funniest-looking dog I'd ever seen. Thin curly hair barely covered her sausage-shaped body. Her big eyes always looked surprised. And her tail looked like a rat's.
She was brought to the vet to be put to sleep because her owners didn’t want her anymore. But I thought Minnie had a sweet personality. "No one should judge her by her looks," I thought. So instead of putting her to sleep, the vet gave her the chance to be adopted(收养)by someone else. I advertised Minnie in the local paper: "Funny-looking dog, well behaved, needs a loving family."
When a young man called, I warned him that Minnie was strange looking. The boy on the phone told me that his grandfather’s 16-year-old dog had just died. They wanted Minnie no matter what it looked like. I gave Minnie a good bath. Then we waited for them to arrive.
At last, an old car drove up in front of the vet's. Two kids ran to the door. They took Minnie to their grandfather, who was waiting in the car. I hurried behind them to see his reaction to Minnie.
The grandfather carried Minnie in his arms and touched her soft hair. She licked( 舔 )his face. It was love at first lick.
"She’s perfect!" the old man said excitedly.
I was thankful that Minnie had found the good home that she deserved.
That’s when I saw that the grandfather’s eyes were a milky white color---he was blind.
