When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone“has an accent”is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect, too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not ” (meaning “Have you eaten ”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects—for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
4. What does the author think of his/her friends’ response in Paragraph 1
A. It reflects their self confidence. B. It reflects their language levels.
C. It misses the real meaning of accents. D. It shows that they are good learners.
5. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English
A. To show different languages in Singapore. B. To correct a grammatical mistake.
C. To show a traditional approach. D. To justify the use of dialects.
6. What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph
A. Appreciate the value of accents and dialects. B. Travel all over the world.
C. Look for accents in China. D. Distinguish our local languages from others’.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards accent
A. Negative. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据文章第一段“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point. (当我向一些朋友提到我们都有口音时,他们中的大多数人都自豪地回答说:“好吧,我的英语/汉语等都说得很好。”但这种说法没有切中要害。)”可知,作者认为他/她的朋友忽略了口音的真正含义。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三自然段中“The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different (根据新加坡英语使用者扎实的语法体系,这个句子结构良好,沟通清晰。为什么仅仅因为它不同就应该是错误的?)”可知,作者认为不能因为它不同就认为它是错的。所以作者使用新加坡口语的例子是在为使用方言进行辩护。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way. (像这样的语言差异可以洞察人们的文化经历和背景。在一个全球化的时代,一个人说话的方式是一个人身份的一个独特部分。大多数人都乐于谈论他们演讲背后的文化。我们会更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。)”可知,作者在最后一段中建议我们欣赏口音和方言的价值,这样我们可以更好了解我们的世界,交更多的朋友。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Desertification (沙漠化) is a course that has caused much concern over the past few years and it’s a major problem for the ancient land of Egypt, where 96% of the country’s land is desert.
So why is it that—if you drove a car 10 miles west of the Suez Canal—you would see a large number of forests outlined against the orange sand and blue sky of the Sahara
The Serapium Forest is the richest of Egypt’s 36 areas that make up a program to fight desertification by creating sustainably managed commercial forests fed completely by wastewater. The 500-mile forest is only a short distance from the 400, 000 people living in the Egyptian city of Ismailia, who produce millions of tons of wastewater every year.
After a dozen-mile journey to the Serapium Forest, the wastewater is then stored underground where oxygen is fed in to speed up the bacterial purification process. A system of pipes then spreads the wastewater throughout the forest. And human wastewater is still rich in chemicals even after being treated.
The government’s effort, called the National Program for Safe Use of Treated Sewage Water for Afforestation is going a long way toward achieving the country’s goals voice d in the 1992 UN Rio conference on climate change.
The research was supported by Forest Finance, a German company that has already planted near-natural forests in Panama and Vietnam to help those countries with their development and wildlife protection. Forest Finance wants to increase the number of species grown in Serapium by including a forest on the site. That way, the biodiversity of the commercial forest would be able to support a greater number of species, and hopefully bring in money as well. Although the Serapium Forest faces a lot of difficulties, it’s still growing—a 500-acre green wall to join the others in the world in preventing the sands of the world’s deserts from spreading.
8. What can be learned about the Serapium Forest
A. It was built by the people of Ismailia. B. It is in danger of being destroyed.
C. It was planted to fight climate change. D. It is the smallest forest in Egypt.
9. What does the author try to talk about in the fourth paragraph
A. The way of using wastewater to feed the Serapium Forest.
B. The influence of green space on cities.
C. The value of the newly-founded Serapium Forest.
D. The preparation for the government setting up the program.
10. What does the author say about Forest Finance’s Serapium plan
A. It raises serious doubts. B. It has been going smoothly.
C. It encourages the government to take action. D. It will bring great benefits.
11. Where can you read the passage
A. In a diary. B. In a nature magazine.
C. In a novel. D. In a math book.
C 9. A 10. D 11. B

根据第三段中的“The Serapium Forest is the richest of Egypt’s 36 areas that make up a program to fight desertification by creating sustainably managed commercial forests fed completely by wastewater. (Serapium森林是埃及36个地区中最富饶的一个,这些地区组成了一个项目,通过建立完全由废水喂养的可持续管理的商业森林来对抗荒漠化)”可知,建立Serapium Forest的目的是防止土地沙漠化、改善生态环境。故选C。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“After a dozen-mile journey to the Serapium Forest, the wastewater is then stored underground where oxygen is fed in to speed up the bacterial purification process. A system of pipes then spreads the wastewater throughout the forest. And human wastewater is still rich in chemicals even after being treated. ( 经过十几英里的路程到达Serapium森林后,废水被储存在地下,在那里供氧以加速细菌净化过程。然后,一个管道系统将废水输送到整个森林)”可知,该段主要介绍了人们是如何利用废水来浇灌Serapium Forest的。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Forest Finance wants to increase the number of species grown in Serapium by including a forest on the site. That way, the biodiversity of the commercial forest would be able to support a greater number of species, and hopefully bring in money as well. (ForestFinance希望通过在该地点包括一片森林来增加Serapium种植的物种数量。这样,商业森林的生物多样性就能养活更多的物种,也有望带来收入)”可知,ForestFinance的Serapium计划将会在保护环境的同时为当地人带来收益。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是文章第三段中“The Serapium Forest is the richest of Egypt’s 36 areas that make up a program to fight desertification by creating sustainably managed commercial forests fed completely by wastewater. (Serapium森林是埃及36个地区中最富饶的一个,这些地区组成了一个项目,通过建立完全由废水喂养的可持续管理的商业森林来对抗荒漠化)”可知,本文主要介绍了埃及Serapium Forest项目用废水在埃及沙漠中种植森林的意义,故这篇文章因该是能在自然杂志上看到。故选B。

When you walk with a backpack, do you know how the things inside move from side to side Now scientists have figured out how to tap into that movement to produce electricity.
Picture a pendulum (摆锤) fixed to a backpack frame and stabilized with springs on either side. The pack’s weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging movement, and produces electrical current to charge a battery.
Volunteers carried the pack while walking on a running machine and wore masks to measure the flow of O2 and CO2. When the volunteers were walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device did not significantly affect their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of acceleration they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle (涓流) of electricity. If you up the load to 45 pounds, it could fully charge a smartphone only after 12 hours. The details are in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
The device produces electricity from human movement and has been identified as a workable solution to providing a renewable energy source for portable electronic devices. It is particularly useful to those who work in remote areas, as these people often carry a lot of weight in a backpack for their exploration.
But here’s a real conundrum: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researchers say that’s about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load so that they can ensure the pack charges your phone up without weighing you down.
12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. What the device looks like. B. How the device works.
C. Who the device is designed for. D. Why scientists designed the device.
13. What can we know about the device from Paragraph 3
A. It was useless for a long walk.
B. It failed to produce steady electricity.
C. Royal Society Open Science conducted the study of the device.
D. It harvested energy as the volunteers walked.
14. What does the underlined word “conundrum” in the last paragraph mean
A. Problem. B. Bond.
C. Decision. D. Method.
15 What is the best title for the text
A. Finding Smarter Alternatives to Batteries
B. The Development of Backpacks
C. Charging Batteries When Carrying Backpacks
D. Searching for New Ways to Charge Your Phone
B 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“Picture a pendulum (摆锤) fixed to a backpack frame and stabilized with springs on either side. The pack’s weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging movement, and produces electrical current to charge a battery.(想象一个钟摆固定在背包框架上,两边都有弹簧来稳定。背包的重量与钟摆相连,所以当你走路时钟摆会左右摆动。然后,由摆动运动驱动机器,产生电流给电池充电)”可知,第二段主要讲了该设备的工作原理。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“When the volunteers were walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device did not significantly affect their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of acceleration they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle (涓流) of electricity.(当志愿者带着20磅的负重轻微摆动时,与固定负重时相比,该设备对他们的代谢率没有显著影响。事实上,能量收集包减少了他们在普通背包中感受到的加速度,这可能意味着长距离徒步旅行更舒适。而且这个装置确实产生了稳定的电流)”可知,这个设备在志愿者行走时收集能量。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词后“the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researchers say that’s about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load so that they can ensure the pack charges your phone up without weighing you down. (能量收集装置目前重达五磅。研究人员说,大约四磅太多了,不能成为电池的明智替代品。因此,他们希望更多的研究能减轻他们的负担,这样他们就可以确保电池组为你的手机充电而不会给你带来负担。)”可知,下文说的是这个装置的不足之处:太重了,需要改进。由此推知,conundrum指的“不足”,与problem同义。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段“When you walk with a backpack, do you know how the things inside move from side to side Now scientists have figured out how to tap into that movement to produce electricity.(当你背着背包走路时,你知道里面的东西是如何左右移动的吗?现在科学家们已经找到了如何利用这种运动来发电的方法)”可知,文章主要介绍了一种可以用来发电的背包,介绍了工作原理以及存在的问题。所以“背背包时给电池充电”是文章最佳标题。故选C项。
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s normal for friends to experience conflict, disagreements, and even fight. You can’t always agree on everything. Most times conflict with a friend is easily solved. But in some cases, the disagreement and the conflict grow leading to anger, sadness and even the end of a friendship. Learning to handle the conflict with friends in a healthy way is beneficial for both sides. ___16___.
Calm down.
The first thing is to calm down. ___17___. Prevent further damage to the relationship by taking a moment to calm down. Get some alone time. Tell your friend that you need a moment to clear your head. You can either go for a walk or just take a warm bath.
___18___.
It may feel as if it helps you explain your concerns more thoroughly if you bring in related examples from past events. Avoid this at all costs. Past issues for discussion only make things worse. Remember it’s important to focus on the issue at hand, not past events.
Work towards a compromise.
Unfortunately, some people believe that a compromise means a “lose/lose situation” because each person has to give up something. While this is true, every healthy relationship usually involves compromise and adjusting to others’ needs or wants. ___19___. Just “give a little” to allow your friend to “get a little”.
Be careful of unhealthy friendships.
It’s generally a good idea to work through conflicts with friends. But it isn’t in your best interest if the friendship causes more harm than good. ___20___, you need to re-evaluate if this friendship is worth keeping and consider when to walk away.
A. It takes two to make it work
B. In a heated situation, it’s easy to say or do things we later regret
C. Avoid explaining your concerns repeatedly
D. Remain on the current matter
E. Here are some tips
F. It’s important to surround yourself with people who positively influence your life
G. If you are in a friendship that is based more on conflict or you are the one always apologizing
E 17. B 18. D 19. A 20. G
上文“Learning to handle the conflict with friends in a healthy way is beneficial for both sides. (学会以一种健康的方式处理与朋友的冲突对双方都有益)”提示下文要讲的是处理朋友间的冲突的健康方法,因此E项“这里有一些建议”概括本文主旨,故选E。
【17题详解】
下文“Prevent further damage to the relationship by taking a moment to calm down. (花点时间冷静下来,以免进一步损害你们的关系)”说明可能造成损害关系的行为,与空格处是因果关系,因此B项“在紧张的情况下,很容易说出或做一些让我们后来后悔的话”符合语境,故选B。
【18题详解】
下文“Remember it’s important to focus on the issue at hand, not past events. (记住,关注眼前的问题很重要,而不是过去的事件。)”说明本段主旨是关注眼前的问题,因此D项“保持在当前的问题上”能够概括本段主旨,故选D。
【19题详解】
上文“While this is true, every healthy relationship usually involves compromise and adjusting to others’ needs or wants (虽然这是真的,但每一段健康的关系通常都包括妥协和适应他人的需求或愿望)”说明健康的关系需要双方的妥协,因此A项“需要两个人才能成功”符合语境,与空格处是因果关系,故选A。

Dear Johnson,
My classmates and I took part in a wildness survival program from Thursday to Saturday last week. I can’t wait to share some relevant details with you.
Before we started, we were equipped with a compass, a map, a first aid kit, tents, flashlights, some food, some clothes and so on. In the wild, we climbed three hills and swam across two rivers. But then we lost our way in the forest. Luckily, we found the right direction with the help of the compass. As soon as we arrived at the campsite, we put up out tents, made a fire and then started cooking. We also learned how to give first aid.
Through the program, we learned to use knowledge gained in class to solve problems. It was quite an unforgettable experience for me.
Yours,

A. Negative. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
C

When the volunteers were walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device did not significantly affect their metabolic (新陈代谢) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place.

A. What the device looks like. B. How the device works.

13. What can we know about the device from Paragraph 3

B. It failed to produce steady electricity.
C. Royal Society Open Science conducted the study of the device.
D. It harvested energy as the volunteers walked.
