People were already known to consume microplastics via food and water as well as breathing them in. In a new study, scientists analyzed blood samples from 22 healthy donators and found microplastics in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, which is used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples containcd polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made.
“Previous work had shown that microplastics were 10 times higher in the faeces (粪便) of babies compared with adults and that babies fed with plastic bottles are swallowing millions of microplastic particles (微粒) a day. We also know in general that babies are more sensitive to chemical and particle exposure,” said Prof Dick Vethaak, a scientist at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.“That worries me a lot.”
The new research adapted existing techniques to detect and analyze particles as small as 0.0007mm. Some of the blood samples contained two or three types of plastic. The team used steel syr nge needles and glass tubes to avoid pollution and tested for background levels of microplastics using blank samples.
Vethaak acknowledged that the amount and type of plastic varied considerably between the blood samples.“But this is a pioneering study,”he said, with more work now necded. He said the differences might reflect short-term exposure before the blood samples were taken, such as drinking from a plastic-lined coffee cup or wearing a plastic face mask.
A recent study found that microplastics can attach to the outer membranes(膜) of red blood cells and may limit their ability to transport oxygen. The particles have also been found in the placentas of pregnant women.
“Arc the particles preserved in the body Are they transported to certain organs And are these levels sufficiently high to cause disease ” Vethaak said.“More detailed research on how microplastics affect the structures and processes of the human body, and whether and how they can transform cells and how they may cause cancer, is urgently needed. The problem is becoming more urgent each day,”Vethaak added.
8. What does the new study in Paragraph I show
A. Microplastic pollution is harmful to human health.
B. Microplastics have been detected in human blood.
C. Drinks bottles contain more microplastics than plastic carrier bags.
D. Food packag ng is the main source of microplastics in the human body.

Ant queens are famously long-lived, even though they shouldn’t be. Generally, animals that put lots of energy into reproduction sacrifice some time off their life. But ant queens produce millions of eggs and live an extraordinarily long time compared with worker ants that don’t reproduce.
Now, researchers have shown how one ant species pulls off this anti-aging technique. When queens and hopeful queens of the species Harpegnathos saltator speed up to reproduce, a part of what’s called the insulin (胰岛素) signaling pathway gets blocked, slowing aging, the researchers report in the Sept. 2 Science. That molecular pathway has long been connected with aging in mammals, including humans.
“There’s been a nced to understand why queens, or reproductives, in social insects can live for so amazingly long,” says Marc Tatar, a biologist at Brown University in Providence,R. L, who was not involved with the study. Some ant species have queens that survive 30 times as long as their workers.
In a rare behavior for ants, when a queen H. saltator dies, some female workers begin competing in fights for the chance to replace her. These hopeful royals develop ovaries (卵巢), start laying eggs and transition into queenlike forms called gamergates. When a worker transitions to a gamergate, her life span becomes five times as long as it was. But if she doesn’t end up becoming queen and returns to a worker, her life span shortens again.
The researchers exploited this behavior to investigate the molecular strengthening of anti-aging in these ants. H. saltator gamergates, it turns out, extend their life spans by taking advantage of a split in the insulin signaling pathway, the chain of chemical reactions that drive insulin’s effects on the body. One branch of this pathway is involved with reproduction, while the other is connected with aging.
12. What do you know from Paragraph 1
A. Ant queens live unexpectedly longer.
B. Worker ants live longer than other ants.
C. Female animals live longer than male ones.
D. Animals in reproduction live longer than others.
13. What’s the key to ant queens’ slowing age
A. They speed up to reproduce.
B. The molecular pathway contributes to it.
C. The insulin signaling pathway gets blocked.
D. They’ve invented advanced anti-aging techniqucs.
14. What will happen after an ant queen dies
A. The ant group will be dismissed.
B. A gamergate will finally replace it.
C. The hopeful royals will surely become queens.
D. The female workers use thcir own ovaries to lay eggs.
15. What’s the passage mainly about
A. The secret of anti-aging.
B. The life span of an ant queen.
C. The ant queen’s secret of long life.
D. The process of a gamergate to become a queen.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. C

Chen Xingrong, 16, was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) when he was a baby. After being diagnosed with autism, his father, Chen Xunhu, quit his job and devoted his full attention to the topic of autism. In 2012, Chen Xunhu learned that swimming could help autistic people improve their important ability and articulation (发音), so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. He spent several months teaching his son and discovered that his son had gradually developed the ability to control his breath under water, which significantly increased his confidence.
The father laid the groundwork for his son’s swimming lessons. Two hand rings and a swing are installed (安装) from the ceiling by the father to help Chen Xingrong strengthen his muscles and learn swimming movements more precisely.

13 What’s the key to ant queens’ slowing age
A. They speed up to reproduce.
B The molecular pathway contributes to it.
