On Aug 7, Xu Shixiao and her partner, Sun Mengya, won gold in the first women's canoe (划艇) double 500 m event at the Tokyo Games. It was also the first Olympic gold medal for China in the event.
Yet Xu's journey to the Olympics was bumpy-she faced lots of difficulties.
In 2013, the news that women's canoeing was still not an Olympic event dealt her a heavy blow.
At that time, Xu's coach suggested her either changing to another sport or retiring (退役) .
It was impossible for her to change the sport at age 21. Xu gave up her career and found her first job as a saleswoman. The next year, she was promoted (晋升) as a human resources manager.
When Xu went to work as usual in a company in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, five years ago, she was surprised to get a call from her former coach, asking about her willingness to return to canoeing and compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Xu quickly made her decision.
“I quit my job, told my family about it and went back to training three days later. There was not much time left for me to prepare for the Olympics, “Xu recalls.” I never thought that one day I could go back to the sport. Now that I have started again, I will do my best.”
To catch the opportunity to go back to canoeing on the international level, Xu started her training —“as cruel as hell”. She began her daily exercises early morning and ended at 10: 30 p. m. Every day, she would set several detailed goals for her training. “Only when I reached all my daily goals, I would go ashore,” Xu says.
The more than two months of grueling (艰辛的) training finally paid off. Xu won two gold medals at the 13th National Games in two women's canoe events, which meant she would be part of the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.

Children should do housework. That's a controversial (有争议的) idea, though not everyone will admit it. A few parents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign (分派) housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn't get done.
That's a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time being helpful to their emotional well-being.
One small study. done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor (预测) for young adults' success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives.
But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1, 000 American adults, 75 percent said they believed regular housework made kids “more responsible”. Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework.
Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance (平衡) a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance.
What should you do when getting children to do housework Accept no excuses. Don't worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you're spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you're doing it right. Can a payment help Maybe. But if you're trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message.
28. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. Housework is a must-do for parents. B. Very few children get housework done.
C. Children are very busy with housework. D. Family members should respect each other.
29. What is found in the small study
A. Housework makes a man live a happy life. B. A man's success depends on his housework.
C. A child must start doing housework at Age 3. D. Housework helps develop a sense of responsibility.
30. What does the author advise parents to do in the last paragraph
A. Balance housework and study. B. Pay children for housework.
C. Do housework by themselves. D. Help children do housework positively.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. Housework Matters to Children B. Adults Do Less Housework in the US
C. Parents' Words Speak Louder D. Children Need More Care at Home

Over the last two days, much of Spain has been coated with dust (灰尘) , and the skies have turned bright orange. A huge cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert is causing the strange weather. The dust cloud is expected to spread to other parts of Europe.
Across much of Spain on Tuesday morning, a thin layer (层) of red dust coated everything outside. From streets to sidewalks to balconies, everything was covered with a layer of dust. As the sun rose, the dust in the air turned the skies in some cities a strange orange. The cause of the dust and unusual sky colour wasn't a forest fire, but dust from the Sahara Desert.
Every year, a large cloud of dust rises from the Sahara Desert. It's called the Saharan AirLayer. Usually, it crosses the Atlantic Ocean as part of a natural cycle that helps develop farmland and beaches in Central and South America.
But sometimes, depending on the weather, the layer of dust gets forced to the north. Large sandstorms in northern Africa lift sand and dust into the air, where it gets blown towards Spain. Though the particles (微粒) in the air come from sand, they're much more like dust than sand at a beach.
These kinds of storms aren't unknown in Spain. In fact, it has a special name. It's called a “calima”. This calima is so large that it can be seen from space. A NASA scientist who studies weather in the atmosphere says it's like a river of dust in the air. That river of dust has met with a river of wet air driven by strong winds.
Spain's weather service described the dust storm as being “very intense (强烈) ”. At one point on Tuesday, the air quality in Madrid was the worst in the world. Government health experts warned people not to go outside without a mask, and to keep their windows and doors closed at home.

第二节
One possible version:
The First Day at School
My first day at Hongxing Senior High School was such an impressive memory to me.
My new school is much larger than my junior high school, with three tall teaching buildings on the right of the campus. There is a big screen on the blackboard and a computer in each classroom, which is very fantastic. The headteacher is strict but great. My classmates are all friendly and helpful.
I felt nervous at first when I sat in the big classroom. But soon I was relaxed after our teacher asked us to introduce ourselves to each other. I like my new school very much and I believe I can make great progress here.
第三节
One possible version:
Standing in front of his house, I began to get nervous. I didn't know what to say or do. So much time had passed and a lot of memories seemed to have been blurred. But after hugs and introductions, the years dissolved as we exchanged stories about our lives. I had brought along the only picture I could find containing the two of us from my sixth birthday. The picture is a witness to our friendship in the past.
Seeing the photo, Greg handed me a small, old card. It was written “Greg's invitation to my sixth birthday party”, signed “From Donnie” in faded blue crayon. Although the card had turned yellow, it could be seen that he kept it carefully for many years. There were a few other things shared that evening, but none as meaningful as the invitation and the picture. They were stored apart but saved for the reunion of two old friends. True friendship does not fade with time.

W: I need to hand in the final paper tomorrow, but my computer breaks down!
M: Have you tried restarting it If it still doesn't work, you can use mine.
(Text 2)
M: Do you know how to use the health care service
W: Yes. You should first make an appointment on the website of the health care system. Then you can see the doctor in the school health centre.
(Text 3)
W: James, I can't help feeling nervous. What can I do
M: Come on, Julian. You've been on so many big stages playing the piano and singing before. Giving a speech won't be a big deal for you!
(Text 4)
W: Mr. Moore, I've added some examples of ancient Egypt in my article as you've suggested.
M: I think it still lacks scientific explanations. You'd better read more related articles.
(Text 5)
W: What a wonderful afternoon! This is even better than San Francisco and Salt Lake City.
M: We are lucky to be in New England at this time of year.
(Text 6)
M: Hello, Anna! How was your weekend
W: Great! I went to the Culture Festival. I saw some great artworks and heard some wonderful poems, and, best of all, a band played a piece of music that I wrote!
M: Did they I'm sorry I missed that!
W: Everyone said my work was encouraging. But I suppose it's not good enough.
M: You should be proud of yourself. It's a great achievement!
(Text 7)
M: Why didn't you show up for the meeting this morning
W: Well, my car broke down on the way.
M: What happened
W: The engine seems to be having problems. It's driving me crazy!
M: Wow. Have you thought about getting a new car
W: Yeah, I've thought about that, but I cannot afford a new car.
M: Maybe you can rent a car. It doesn't cost much. I know Toyota is running a promotion. It's $219 per month.
W: That's a good deal. I might consider it.
(Text 8)
W: Wang, where have you been Mr. Anderson will arrive at 10: 00 a. m. We've only got 40 minutes to prepare before his visit.
M: You can't imagine what I just went through this morning! I was visited by the police.
W: What happened
M: It's all because of my neighbour Mrs. White.
W: Why Did you quarrel with her
M: No. I was cooking Chinese medicine for my mum at home, and Mrs. White smelled it and thought someone was doing dangerous chemistry experiment.
W: So she called the police
M: Yeah, and I had to explain to the police what Chinese medicine was.
W: Bad luck. Anyway, you'd better go over the documents I put on your desk. We must make sure Mr.
Anderson will sign the contract with us today.
M: Okay. Can you get me a glass of water I'm dying of thirst.
W: Sure.
(Text 9)
M: Can I help you, madam
W: Yes. Did you have this room checked before we moved in The toilet doesn't seem to have enough power and the water doesn't flow away in the shower. What do you want to say about that
M: I'm extremely sorry to hear that. I'll attend to it right away. We usually check every room before new guests move in. This mistake occurs maybe because we've been busy with a large conference recently.
W: That's not what you should do, after all. One doesn't expect this sort of thing here.
M: No, madam. I do apologize. It's most unusual. We will try to check the room as thoroughly as possible.
Anything else
W: Well, your air conditioning doesn't seem to be working very well. It's so hot up here.
M: I'll just try to make it work better and you'll find it a little cooler in a short time. Also I'll send someone along right away to look at the toilet and the shower.
