It was first used as a shade against the sun. Nobody knows who first invented it. But the umbrella was first used in very ancient times. When it first appeared in Egypt, it was used only by the rich as a symbol of their power. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella. During the middle ages, however, the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the 16’century and later in France and in England. Gradually, most European countries began to use the umbrella. During all this time, umbrellas have not changed much in style, but they do become much lighter.

Self-confidence: one’s belief that can meet all the demands of a task. Some people are born with it, and everyone else is out of luck, right Wrong! Self-confidence is not something people are born with, like their height or hair color. It’s a skill that anyone can start practicing today.
One simple self-confidence builder is positive self-talk. What you say to yourself influences how you feel about yourself. Telling yourself “I can’t do anything right “or asking “Why did I even try ” could ruin you. Instead, if you get a bad grade on a test, try saying “I’ll do better next time.” rather than focusing on your failure, identify ways that you can improve, and try again.
Another way to build your confidence is to believe in yourself. Studies show that believing you can do something can increase your chance of success. If you put in the work to learn how to do something, believe in your ability. Don’t let doubt steal your energy and motivation away.
One of the ugliest enemies of self-confidence is comparing yourself to others. Thinking that you are better than other people will make you arrogant(傲慢的). And thinking you are worse than others will fill you with envy. Try keeping a diary and write down all the things that you’re thankful for.
Facing your fears is another way to build self-confidence. You might have a talent for public speaking. But how will you know if you never overcome your fears and try it Even if you fail, leaving your comfort zone can make you stronger.
Finally, showing kindness to others is a great way to build self-confidence. Showing kindness reminds you that you can make a difference in the world. When you make others feel good, you, in turn, feel good about yourself.
28. What does the underlined words “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Self-confidence. B. The belief. C. The demand. D. The task.
29. How did the author develop Paragraph 2
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By showing proofs. D. By answering questions.
30. What is the author’s advice on not comparing yourself to others
A. Believing in yourself. B. Focusing on your failure.
C. Thinking you are worse than others. D. Writing down what you are thankful for.
31. Which of the following is probably the best title
A. The Benefits of Positive Self-talk
B. Building Self-confidence: You Can Do It!
C. How to Be Successful with Self-confidence
D. Overcoming Your Fears: A Key to Self-confidence
A 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据划线词上文“Self-confidence: one’s belief that can meet all the demands of a task.(自信:一个人相信自己能够完成一项任务的所有要求)”以及划线词所在句“Some people are born with it, and everyone else is out of luck, right ”可知,文章第一句说明了自信的定义。 故选A项。
根据第二段“One simple self-confidence builder is positive self-talk. What you say to yourself influences how you feel about yourself. Telling yourself “I can’t do anything right “or asking “Why did I even try ” could ruin you. Instead, if you get a bad grade on a test, try saying “I’ll do better next time.” rather than focusing on your failure, identify ways that you can improve, and try again.(一个简单的自信建立者是积极的自我对话。你对自己说的话会影响你对自己的感觉。告诉自己“我什么都做不好”,或者问自己“我为什么要尝试 ”可能会毁了你。相反,如果你考试成绩不好,试着说:“下次我会做得更好。”而不是专注于你的失败,找出你可以改进的地方,然后再试一次)”可推知,第二段主要通过举例子来论证positive self-talk。故选A项。
根据第四段“Try keeping a diary and write down all the things that you’re thankful for.(试着写日记,写下所有你感激的事情)”可知,作者建议不要和他人进行比较,而是试着记录下你感恩的事情。
根据第一段中“Self-confidence is not something people are born with, like their height or hair color. It’s a skill that anyone can start practicing today.(自信不是人们与生俱来的,就像他们的身高或发色一样。这是一项任何人都可以从今天开始练习的技能)”结合文章主要讲述了建立自信的几种方法,B项“建立自信:你能做到!”最符合文章标题。故选B项。

From Black Beauty to The Chronicles of Narnia, films and books have often shown the friendships that can develop between humans and horses. Lots of real-life stories have shown that horses seem to have a special understanding of humans. However, until a recent study, nobody knew if horses really recognized different human emotions.
A team of researchers set out to see what horses can understand. They used a test that is often used to see how much babies understand about the world around them. The team brought 28horses into a room, one by one. Each was shown a picture of a happy human and a picture of a sad human. At the same time,a recording of a happy or sad voice was played. The test showed that horses can recognize different emotions by looking at facial expressions and hearing the tone of people’s voices and matching the two up.When the voice didn’t match up with the picture, the horses seemed to be puzzled: they looked at the picture for longer, as if they knew that something wasn’t right. However, the researchers still don’t know if the horses actually understand what it is to be sad or happy.
Scientist Océane Liehrmann, from the University of Turku in Finland, worked on the study. She said,“You could imagine that they have a particular box in their mind labelled (贴标签)’human sadness’ containing the characteristics of both a sad face and a sad voice.”
It’s also thought that horses prefer to spend time around happy people because they spent longer looking at the pictures of happy people. The researchers now want to see if horses can recognize other negative human emotions.
32. Why did the author mention two films at the beginning
A. To lead the readers to the topic. B. To introduce the films to the readers.
C. To compare the films with the real life. D. To advise the readers to relax themselves.
33. The researchers want to find out in the study whether horses can
A. hear different sounds B. communicate with humans
C. recognize different pictures D. understand human emotions
34. When finding the picture didn’t match up with the voice, how did the horses feel
A. Sad B. Happy. C. Puzzled. D. Satisfied.
35. Why do the researchers think horses like to be around happy people
A. Because horses like to hear loud laughter.
B. Because horses can recognize people’s sad emotions.
C. Because horses spent more time on the pictures of happy people.
D. Because horses understand what it is to be sad or happy for people.
A 33. D 34. C 35. C

根据前文内容“It also causes your blood vessels to widen, which helps lower your blood pressure. The exercises can help control blood-sugar levels for those with diabetes.(它还会使你的血管扩张,这有助于降低血压。这些运动可以帮助糖尿病患者控制血糖水平。)”提出了该运动方式对于降血压,控制血糖水平方面的好处,因此,这一部分在讲述该运动方式的好处。同时结合前文“Do you want to do some exercises to lose weight (你想做些运动来减肥吗 )”提出的“减肥需求”可推知,设空处应继续讲述该运动的益处,同时应与“减肥”有关。选项G“It’s also said that people lose weight because of all the calories being burned.(也有人说,人们减肥是因为所有的卡路里都被消耗掉了。)”可用在段中,其提到燃烧卡路里,即,运动减肥,是其好处,结合后文“And the routine can be done in just three to five minutes!(这套动作只需3到5分钟就能完成!)”
分析本空前一句“Every movement must be done quickly and properly.(每一个动作都要做得又快又准。)” A“So check your form.(所以检查你的状态/体能。)” 故选A项。
Squat like you’re sitting down while swinging your arms out in front. 2. Swing your arms one by one forward and backward at a 90-degree angl.(1. 像坐着一样蹲着,同时向前摆动手臂。2. 手臂依次前后摆动成90度角。)”可知,讲述的是步骤,本空起到引出下文的作用。选项C“Now let’s take a look at the simple steps.(现在让我们看一下简单的步骤。)”
F“Push your arms from your shoulders over your head and back.(把你的手臂从肩膀推到头部和背部。)”

One sunny Friday morning, the school hallways were filled with excitement. The yearly school project was just a week away, and the students were busy preparing their presentations. Among the students, two friends, Lisa and Emily, found themselves in a heated argument.
“I can’t believe you’re proposing that boring topic, Emily!” Lisa shouted, her eyes wide with anger. “We need to come up with something special, something that will make us stand out!” Emily rolled her eyes,” But Lisa, I’ve been working on this idea for weeks. It’s not about being special, it’s about doing something meaningful.“
Lisa crossed her arms, “Well, if you say so. But I still think we should go for something more flashy.’
As the disagreement continued, their voices grew louder, catching the attention of their classmates. Soon, other students started to gather around, adding their opinions and suggestions.
The once peaceful hallways were now filled with unpleasant voices, each one voicing their own ideas and concerns.
Then their teacher, Mr. Thompson, approached them. “What’s all the argument about ” he asked calmly. Lisa and Emily turned to him, still arguing.
Mr. Thompson held up his hand, silencing them.” Listen, “he said,”I know you both want to do your best and make a lasting effect. But remember, it’s not about being the most special or flashy. It’s about coming up with a topic that matters to you and making a difference in someone’s life.”
Lisa and Emily looked at each other, realizing their mistake. They had been so focused on impressing others that they had forgotten the true purpose of their project.
“You’re right, Mr. Thompson,” Lisa admitted softly. “We shouldn’t let ourselves be limited by what’s popular or what others expect us to do.”
Emily nodded in agreement, “Yes, we need to focus on something that truly matters to us.” With newfound determination, Lisa and Emily decided to work together again and choose atopic that aligned with their passions and interests. They spent the next week researching and planning their presentation, ensuring that it would be both engaging and informative.

It’s also thought that horses prefer to spend time around happy people because they spent longer looking at the pictures of happy peopleThe researchers now want to see if horses can recognize other negative human emotions.
